LEAVENWORTH, KAN. – Kidnapping Warden Thomas B. White and other officers, the desperadoes force their way from the Federal Prison, and using the captives as shields, terrorize the country with fire-arms, which were obtained in some unaccountable manner. A posse of 500 set out on the trail and rescue E.C. Salisbury, a farmer near here, imprisoned in his own home by the desperadoes, who sought refuge there. A stirring battle resulted in the retaking of 3 of the felons, the death of 3 others and the subsequent capture of the seventh.

Signaling to shore and guiding intrepid guards in a boat to the endangered man, the airship dives to the scene and stands by during the rescue. The exhausted bather is brought safely to shore and revived, a stirring episode in one of the most modern incidents in marine activity.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The gridiron’s most colorful spectacle returns $400,000 for charity, and victory to the West Point cohorts in the 32nd meeting of the service elevens. CAMDEN, ARK. – At least one dead, scores injured, and property damage of $750,000 is the estimated toll of this tragic storm. Sweeping from the south, skirting northern Louisiana, the wind dips over this city cutting from it path the entire business section. The $75,000 Ouachita Court House is left a total wreck. Rescuers dig into the tangled mass, formerly two and three story buildings, seeking missing persons. Trees are uprooted, church steeples toppled, and homes torn to bits by the terrible blast.

MOSCOW, U.S.S.R. – In the greatest display of military strength in Soviet history, 40,000 armed men and women, and a million workers parade past the tomb of Nikolai Lenin. Employees pushed to overtime duties, dispose of 70,000 sacks a day, an average of a million individual parcels. The joh is attacked with vigor and the task completed without error, but how they work!

IMPERIAL ARTILLERY HONORS ANNIVERSARY OF OATH TO REPUBLIC
STOCKERAUT, AUSTRIA – The office track royalist until, now a vital part of the new government’s army, observes the birthday of its new-sworn allegiance, and wins the admiration of officialom by it skillful and spectacular maneuvers. NEW YORK, N.Y. – Near the very center of the nation’s metropolis, the richest city in the world, a unique settlement develops. Reminiscent of squatter days on the old frontiers, a ramshackle town of discarded packing cases, and other odds and ends, grows up. Weary “world-travelers” find it to their advantage to merge in a common cause for their mutual welfare. A huge commissary dishes out a real “mulligan stew,” and the Charlton Street dump becomes the headquarters of the “jungle” fraternity.

MASPETH, N.Y. – Murdered in a squalid rooming house, the one time gangster overlord, who escaped the law 23 times and gunmen’s bullets on 16 occasions, is buried. The hoodlums who once hearkened to his bidding desert the bier, and pomp and gaudiness are completely missing. A plain wooden box, instead of the customary bronze or silver affair, encases the body of the man who always out-guessed society, but who could not deny the guns of his enemies. Attended only by the widow and a few sight-seers, the obsequies are performed without benefit of clergy.

FRIGHTENED NATIVES FLEE IN PANIC BEFORE JAPANESE ADVANCE
TIENTSIN, CHINA – Military occupation of this salient point in Japan’s offensive against China is marked in the frantic community by scenes of disorder as invading soldiers compel refugees to submit to search and seizure within the Japanese concession. Ignorant natives jam all roads leaving the city in an effort to escape the invading troops but watchful sentries break up the mobs and search everyone for arms. Meanwhile remnants of the Chinese army mobilize nearby to defend the nation against an offensive on the Mukden-Pieping railroad which links this section with Manchuria, the scene of the greatest fighting.

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – With Mrs. Rubio supervising the work, the Protection Association contributes hundreds of toys and “dolces” to the poor children of the city. CORAL GABLES, FLA. – Seven weeks after laws permitting meetings within the state are passed over the governor’s veto, this new course is constructed in record time and opened to the public. Under the protection of the law, gamblers flock to the track and reap a harvest at the Pari-Mutuel machines, installed as an added attraction in the betting rings. A thrilling 6-furlong canter opens the first meeting, and Brown Supinet with Jockey Stout up romps home to the initial victory on the course in a stirring claiming race.

HIGHLIGHTS IN 1931’S NEWS
The parade of events during the past year dealt disastrous blows throughout the world. The major catastrophe of the period was the floods at Hankow, China where upwards of 500,000 persons died in one of the most terrible tragedies that ever visited the Orient.

The most terrifying earthquake disaster the Western Hemisphere has known nearly wiped Managua, Nicaragua, off the face of the globe.

The Bourbon dynasty, successors to the throne of Spain, fell before revolutionary forces, and a monarchical government that had endured since 3,000 B.C. retired from existence as Alfonso XIII abdicated and the nation became a Republic.

Aviation history continued to be made in 1931, with Harold Gatty and Wiley Post setting their plane Betty Mae down on Long Island after circling the globe in a little over 8 days.

Daredevil flying contributed the greatest thrill in the thrilling history of the newsreel screen, with the crash of Lowell Bayles. Screaming through the air at 300 miles an hour, Bayles’ plane, twisting and turning, plunged to earth and catapulted the intrepid pilot to his death.

This symposium of the great events of the year would be incomplete without 1931’s best laughs – and a couple of ‘em are included that have shaken rafters throughout the civilized world – and uncivilized, too.

CULVER CITY, CAL. – Driving his machine at a terrific speed around he 1/5-mile track, Ray Grant crosses the last marker at such a tremendous pace that his wheel rides out from under him. Catapulted from his seat, Grant lands in an unconscious heap as the judges award him first money for his daredevil riding. The inaugural program of 12 races is featured by frequent spill, with crack pilots risking their lives to earn the coveted prizes.

DEVOUT NATIVES PRAY AT SACRED RIVER FOR GANDHI’S SAFE RETURN
ALLAHABAD, INDIA – Hundreds of his Hindu followers implore the “Mother Ganges” to afford protection to the little Mahatma on his trip home from the conferences at the “Round Table” session at London with the British powers. The natives prostrate themselves as they approach the banks of the “holy waters,” in a picturesque ritual, exhorting the gods to bring the great leader home without harm.

CHANOCHIATUN, MANCHURIA – Loosely organized “irregulars” meet a thrust of the powerful Japanese columns, seeking to occupy this town, a strategic position along the branch line of the Mukden-Peiping railroad. Zero weather and formidable well-trained Japanese forces conspire to force the grimly determined native soldiers to relinquish their tenancy of the position. Strengthened by re-enforcements, the invading troops push on toward their objective after a short skirmish in which the local defenders are forced to evacuate the town, in one of the critical high spots of the conflict.
