NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1944 (UE44041)

THE CAPTURE OF ST. LO
After 40 days of continuous fighting the Yanks mount a huge offensive which is aimed at St. Lo, Nazi stronghold. They cautiously proceed through the tricky terrain, bringing teir machine guns, bazookas and mortars into murderous action. Soon, Nazis appear waving white flags. The Yanks file onward past anit-personnel mines, and are on continuous alert for snipers. Shattering artillery and air barrages have prepared the way for them as they enter battered St. Lo. Snipers are hunted out and the victory is made secure. So secure is it, that an “Out of Bound” refugee camp is set up, where in short order, French children are observed at play.

ACE PARACHUTISTS
Fort Benning, GA.—As a recruitment call for volunteer paratroopers goes out through the U.S. Army, demonstration pictures show various of the training maneuvers which these “heroes of the skies” undergo before they graduate into their combat position at the very vanguard of Uncle Sam’s G.I. Joes.

DEFIANT NURSES
Normandy—Captures Nazi ladies who had been serving as nurses, are a study as they file by Yank cameras. Most of them are docile, but though they are destined for speedy return tot heir own lines, some female fists are waved in defiance.

WAVES IN THE CORN
Ceder Falls, Iowa—Waves relive farm labor shortage by helping local farmers de-tassel the corn, to insure an adequate supply of the desired seed for next year. Then they get into the ears, up to their ears.

WAVES SECOND ANNIVERSARY
Hunter College, N.Y.—Celebrating their second anniversary, companies of Waves smartly parade, reflecting their marvelous training and their high morale.

PLANE DISASTER (Exclusive)
Jacksonville, Fla.—Two Army fighter planes crashed in mid-air, then plunged into a local neighborhood, causing extensive damage to homes and apartment buildings.

RODEO ALA HOLLYWOOD (Exclusive)
Los Angeles, Calif.—Gloria Jean, Queen of the Rodeo, is escorted by many screen stalwarts in a grand entry parade. Then the horses and the brahmas take charge—and how.

PISTOL HEAD COMES HOME
La Guardia Field, N.Y.C.—Pistol Head, a cocker spaniel who had accompanied his master, Lt. Col. Theodore Willis, on 48 flying missions in the South Pacific, is returned home to his mistress, after the Colonel had failed to return from a solo mission.

LARCHMONT RACES (Exclusive)
Larchmont, N.Y.—143 sailing craft spank along in the finals of the largest war-time regatta which has been held by the sea-going enthusiasts of the Larchmont Yachting Club. And the mermaids cut quite a mean figure themselves.

THE YANKS STORM GUAM
A tremendous task force approaches hilly Guam, in the accepted pattern of U.S. invasion of territory held by the Japs. Terrific gun fire and air bombs shatter many of the Jap shore positions—then the “amtracs” (new amphibious craft) swim out from the ramps of huge L.C.I.’s and the shores of this Jap-held American island island are approached. A few of the little craft are set on fire as Jap hits are registered, but the remainder get in. The Yanks leap ashore—Universal’s intrepid cameraman, Irving Smith, right in their midst. A quick reconnaissance reveals that Jap battle stations have been razed, just as they were at Tarawa and Kwajalein. The landing is successful and the battle to secure the entire island is under way.

FROM NORMANY TO BRITTANY
Allied planes unlimber their guns on Nazi targets, with telling results. Ammunition trains, enemy planes, buss-bombs etc. are destroyed. We see part of the tremendous variety of rolling equipment which the Allies have landed in France. After huge battle tanks roll into action—the familiar sight of surrendering Nazis soon follows. As jeeps screech along, one G.I. digs himself a luxury fox hole. And on finishing an inspection tour of the liberated territory, Winston Churchhill boards a Naval cutter, waving goodbye to twirling his topper his topper on a cane.

GENERAL CITES SHORTAGE
Wash, D.C.—Lt. Gen. Somervell declares manpower shortage in critical areas is cutting essential war production.

26 GOVERNORS MEET
St. Louis, MO.—Demonstrating the unity within their ranks, 26 Republican Governors meet at the planning table to discuss the campaigns of Gov. Dewey and Gov. Bricker, heads of the G.O.P. national ticket.

PHILADELPHIA STRIKE
A complete tie-up of transit facilities in the Quaker City follows a labor dispute based on local problems. Transportation of war workers finally causes Federal Government to step in.

SPEED BOATS – NO GAS
Long Beach Marine Stadium, Calif.—Local water bugs who have brewed up their own un-rationed fuel, bounce their splinter-boats around this speedway course.

DEWEY IN SPRINGFIELD
Springfield, Ill.—Republican nominee for President is royally welcomed by Gov. Green and the populace as he visits this shrine of the G.O.P.

MY BEAUTIFUL SISTER
South Boston, Mass.—Members of the Boy’s Club forget their baseball for a while as they compete in “dolling up” their kid sisters. Everyone is all excited chubby—who sleeps through it all.

WITH THE VICTORIOUS FIFTH
In Italy, the trail left by the retreating Nazis is one of destruction, Historic bridges are blown to bits and roads are obliterated. Leghorn is captured and the harbor is filled with the debris of broken ships and wrecked docks. The Brazilian Expeditionary Force lands and briskly steps along to participate in the attack from the South. King George arrives by plane and is taken on a tour of trooping grounds, where the monarch sees some of the reasons for the succession of victories, Gen. Mark Clark’s troops are hanging up.

NORMANDY FIGHTING AND DIVERSION
In the hedge marked countryside we see Yanks plastering the Nazis at short range with mortar shells, smoke bombs and machine gun fire. Nazi prisoners are collected and interviewed. Then a tremendous outdoor audience of G.I.’s draws attention to a bit of Paris moved out into Normandy. It’s a girl show. A great deal of fun is uncovered up on the stage—but the reaction of the audience (at 25 francs per head) is a show in itself.

ARMY SETTLES STRIKE
Philadelphia—City-wide transit strike which was throttling local war production is settled as leaders are arrested and armed G.I.’s ride in every street car.

POPE BLESSES TROOPS
Vatican City—Pope Pins holds a special audience for the Allied troops who had captured Rome. Then he gives them his apostolic blessing.

BOMBING OF SURABAYA
Yank heavies unleash a devastating shower of bombs on this important Javanese seaport, now held by the Japs.

SPOKANE AIR CRASH
Over 100,000 spectators, assembled for gigantic war show, see two attack bombers crash in mid-air, then fall to the earth in flames.

PHILIPPINES’ PRESIDENTS
Washington, D.C.—V.P. Sergio Osmena is sworn in as President of the Philippines by Justice Jackson. And shortly after, a state funeral is held for Manuel Quezon, culminating with temporary internment in Arlington.

CONNIE MACK HONORED
Philadelphia—Baseball honors its “grand old man” in colorful night ceremonies at Shibe Park, with his all star ‘greatest living baseball nine’ in attendance. Then Messrs. Abbott and Costello go into their high jinks, slamming away at the baseball and each other, with no success.

U. S. STRATEGISTS AT HAWAII
Commander-in-Chief, President Roosevelt convenes with General MacArthur, Admiral Nimitz and Admiral Leahy, after arriving from the mainland on a sleek, modern cruiser. Their meeting is loaded with significance, as all attention is centered on a huge map of the western Pacific, with particular attention directed at the Philippine and Tokio. On the parade grounds, the famous Seventh Regiment, heroes of the Aleutian outpost and the Kwajelein campaigns, pass in review.

YANKS ADVANCE IN GUAM
From their established beachhead, the Yanks attack Japs who are entrenched at Point Chonito, a high land. Mortar fire is particularly effective. General Holland Smith, U.S.M.C., watches his men advance and capture their objective. Jap dead cover the ground in droves, and Jap installations are totally destroyed. One of the first tasks of the Seabees was the erection of a flag pole. The Stars and Stripes are restored to Guam.

YANKS ADVANCE IN FRANCE
We watch the Yank pattern of attack in France. Terrific bombing and artillery fire combine to disrupt Nazi ground transport, and to precede the advance of Yank infantry and tank units. Town after town is found in utter ruins. Enemy equipment lies shattered everywhere and prisoners are secured in telling numbers. Jeeps race along, and the Doughboys march by in a celebrating mood.

DEEP SHELTER
London—Buzz-bombs force Londoners to seek safety in their recently completed Deep Shelters. Life within their confines does not differ too greatly from normal life above ground.

ONE MILLIONTH CHECK
Parma, Ohio—The Social Security Board draws its millionth check and presents it to Mrs. Mary Thompson, the first in a series which may amount to $15,000.00 for the widow and her two children. Her husband had paid in $145.00.

THE HAMBLETONIAN
Goshen, N. Y.—The “Corn Tassel Derby” (returned to its native running ground) is won in straight heats by Yankee Maid, the favorite—and Queen of the trotting track.

982 REFUGEES
Oswego, N.Y.—War Relocation Authority transports 982 Europeans refugees to Fort Ontario, where they will be quartered for the duration.

VICTORIES IN FRANCE
The magnitude of the destruction which is being vent on the Nazis in France is brought home by these pictures. Long roadsides look like junk yards, completely littered with wrecked German equipment, remnants of the famous Panzer divisions. Nazi corpses are strewn about, Nazi wounded are treated. Then we see part of the ever-growing march of tens of thousands of demobilized Nazi fighting men, marching to the rear, as prisoners.

YANKS MASTER PACIFIC SKIES
Aboard a Yank task force we watch stirring battles between batteries of Yank ack ack guns and Jap planes. Flaming Jap planes hit the sea, in swarms.

DUMBARTON OAKS PARLEY
Washington, D.C.—Diplomatic missions, representing the U.S.A., Great Britain and the U.S.S.R., convene in parley to preserve the approaching peace and the Four Freedoms.

SYNTHETIC TIRES
Army engineers put synthetic rubber tires through grueling bump tests over rocky roads. Then punctured tires are given the ’40 mile test,’ until they burn themselves up.

NAVY M.D.’S AT GUAM
Women and children of the Chamorros and other natives, freed from Jap subjugation, are treated by U.S. Navy doctors. Nothing dispels their grimness, not even generous helpings of G.I. mess.

F.D.R. MEETS TRUMAN
Washington, D.C.—Democratic candidates Roosevelt and Truman exchange confident smiles as they meet over the luncheon table at the White House.

ICELAND INDEPENDENT
Iceland, after being a republic under foreign domination for 1,000 years, jubilantly celebrates the declaration of he complete independence.

SUNSET LAKE RAGATTA (Exclusive)
WILDWOOD, N.J.—Boats of the Comet and Moth class spin through the breeze at impossible angles as Wildwood Yacht club stages classy small boat regatta.

INVASION OF SOUTH FRANCE (First actual pictures)
Somewhere in Italy, we watch the huge Allied invasion expedition take shape. Tons of equipment are loaded into endless lines of vessels. With barrage balloons floating above, the tremendous armada sets sail for destination, with Admiral Hewitt, General Patch and Navy Secretary Forrestal poring over plans. Fleets of air transport planes roar into view, high overhead. We follow them and chance upon one of the most compelling scenes of the war—the air is totally filled with descending chutists. Back at sea, giant navy guns open their bombardment. The enemy replies. Soldiers pour into landing craft and we see some of the battle action on shore. Grenade rifles help clear the way, snipers finish the task. Tank stops are blasted out by tank guns. Enemy dead and prisoners begin to mount. Towns are entered and the demonstrative natives rush out to greet their liberators.

APPROACHING PARIS
Allied bombers and rocket-firing Typhoons destroy enemy communications, while escort planes destroy the few traces of air opposition. Wrecked enemy equipment litters the ground, including dummy wooden artillery. French villages are speedily entered and passed, by a huge stream of tanks, racing forward to yet greater victories.

TRIPLE CHRISTENING
Philadelphia Navy Yard—In an unprecedented ceremony, Mayor and Mrs. Kelly of Chicago give their city’s name to a giant cruiser; Mayo and Mrs. Bowron name another giant cruiser after their home city, Los Angeles. Then Maryland’s Senator Tydings watches his wife christen a 27,000 ton aircraft carrier, Antietem, commemorating the civil war battle. Both cruisers had been paid for in war bonds by citizens of Chicago and Los Angeles.

FANCY DIVING
Los Angeles, Calif.—At the Olympic Swimming Stadium Lou Ann McCoskey executes a perfect swam dive, Virginia Hunt descends in one of her specialties, and Sammy Lee flips over 3 and ? times (count them). Envious Stubby Kruger attempts to out-do the champs, but he does the banana peel.

ALLIED ADVANCE ON GERMANY
Pontoon bridges hastily thrown across the Marne, speed the Allied attack on Reims, and its capture. The Fighting French assist in the conquest—then stand aside to pay honor to the advancing Allies. Adding splendor to the scene is the beautiful Reims cathedral, barricaded with huge earth works around its base.
Back in Paris, a skulking truckload of Nazis is spied racing through the by-ways. A Frenchman accurately hurls a grenade in their midst and they are obliterated—one Nazi turns into a human torch. At the food depots long lines are formed—bread is being doled out.

QUEBEC CONFERENCE II
Quebec, P.Q.—Shortly after Winston Churchill, Mrs. Churchill and Mackenzie King leave their train, they are joined by Franklin Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. They exchange greetings, then quickly motor up to The Citadel where military honors are paid them. Then another conference between these two leaders of state, gets under way.

DEWEY OPENS CAMPAIGN
Philadelphia—Before cheering thousands, Gov. Thomas Dewey opens his campaign for the presidency with a resounding speech in which he belabors the present administration with defeatism, waste and extravagance.

GESTAPO TORTURE CHAMBER
Paris—The Nazis converted the rifle range at the Ministry of Aviation into a 20th Century, sound-proof, torture chamber where victims were shot or burned if they would not divulge secret information. Then they were buried there.

MOBILE FLAME THROWERS
Somewhere in England—The British demonstrate one of their secret weapons—the flame-throwing carrier. It scorches the earth for a distance of 100 yards.

KOCHMAN’S HELL DRIVERS
Trenton, N.J.—The New Jersey State Fair gets off to a flying start as the Hell Drivers go through their maddening paces. Their autos turn turtle, plunge through roaring flames, then pile up in a planned collision.

MISS AMERICA,1944
Atlantic City, N.J.—The beauties come riding down the famed boardwalk in the annual beauty parade—then attired in sheer bathing suits, they advance on you. Somehow, Venus Ramsey, 19, (Miss Washington, D.C.) is voted the Queen, but they’re all ravishing beauties.

LIBERATION OF BELGIUM
British divisions race across Belgium’s borders, preceded by their armor. Nazi equipment lies burning by the roadside, and Nazi prisoners are shielded from the irate natives. A huge sign in Brussels states, “Welcome to the Liberators.” Then the people of Brussels go all out in their demonstration of joy, at being delivered of the Nazi yoke. All things German, including a swastika flag, are burned.

WITH THE ADVANCING YANKS
General Patton, the dashing warrior, uses his jeep from which to launch another lightning, slashing, attack. His tanks are used as artillery, their fire being directed by walky-talky. A Nazi ammunition dump is hit, and as the advance continues, dead Nazis are scattered everywhere and thousands of dejected Hitlerites are captured.

GAYETY RETURNS TO PARIS
As food supplies pour in, the people become gay once more. Branded women (ex-friends of the Nazis) are held up for public scorn and ridicule. Models parade the boulevards, displaying their Victory fashions and their ever present charm. Then they join G.I. Joes at the crowded sidewalk cafes.

ROUMANIA KNOCKED OUT
Russian armies storm into Roumania in dynamic offensives which quickly force this Balkan state to capitulate . . . and join the Allies.

NAZIS IN MOSCOW
Fifty-seven thousand Nazis march through the streets of Moscow, on their way to Russian prison camps. And the local Department of Sanitation cleans up after them.

QUEBEC CONFERENCE
The principals in this historic conference sit in informal portrait, as do their ladies. And not to be outdone, Falla, the White House pet, has his moment too.

COMICAL MAGIC
Seattle, Wach.—Local magiacians entertain the wounded at the U.S. Naval Hospital as they produce rabbits out of hats and produce whole neckties from scissored cravats.
