Frankfort, GermanyGeneral George S. Patton, Jr., one of the most colorful leaders among Allied combat commanders, succumbs to injuries in an automobile crash. The man who led the famed Third Army through victorious campaigns is to rest among the dead of his command in Luxembourg.
YAMASHITA TRIAL ENDS
ManilaThe trial of the infamous butcher is closed with the Jap General sentenced to death after he was found guilty of allowing Jap soldiers to commit atrocities. His defense counsel, appealing to the Supreme Court, gets a stay of execution.
TRAFFIC SYMIES SERVICEMEN
New YorkThe battleship Washington arrives import with fifteen hundred servicemen who add to the tens of thousands unable to get home from the east coast.
New YorkGotham’s Pennsylvania station is typical of the transportation bottlenecks throughout the country as civilian and serviceman alike find themselves unable to jam aboard trains.
SeattleNearly two hundred thousand uniformed men are stranded on the West Coast with additional transports arriving daily.
West CoastThe Army puts huge transports into service to speed men home. Carrying a hundred men each, the transports wing the lucky ones, who are drawn by lot, homewards.

Sasebo, JapanNippon’s wings are clipped as scores of the country’s planes are destroyed following a directive by Gen. MacArthur that Japan give up even civil aviation. In this one bonfire flame-throwers destroy planes valued at more than a million dollars.

Archbishop Francis J. Spellman of New York heads the list of four new Cardinals from the United States who are among the thirty-two named by the Pope. The others are Archbishop John Glennon of Saint Louis, Archbishop Samuel Stritch of Chicago and Archbishop Edward Mooney of Detroit.

Beverly Hills, Calif.The Canadian Ambassador to the United State, L. B. Pearson, pays tribute to the Hollywood Film Industry for its aid to Canada and her people during the war.
