SOUTH RIPPED BY TORNADOES
COTTON VALLEY, LA. – Worst hit of Southern States areas struck by savage wind storms, in which 25 die, Cotton Valley counts twelve dead and digs out from appalling wreckage. The tornado laid homes flat and left hundreds homeless.

TOURNAMENT OF ROSES
PASADENA – “Our Golden West” is the theme of the 59th Tournament of Roses, replete with picture stars, pretty girls and a glittering float parade. Gen. Omar Bradley is the grand marshall.

MUMMERS HAIL KING MOMUS
PHILADELPHIA – The amazing costumes and spectacular antics are the same, but the weather is different, for this year’s Mummers Parade. It rains, on swirling paraders and onlookers alike.

MICHIGAN WINS IN ROSE BOWL
PASADENA – The Wolverines of Michigan score in every period to administer an incredible 49-0 shellacking of the U.S.C. Trojans. 93,000 fans see the slaughter. Michigan proves its superiority.

13-13 TIE IN COTTON BOWL
DALLAS – After taking a drubbing in the first half, Penn State surges back to tie things up against Southern Methodist. 47,000 grid cohorts see classic in chilly Cotton Bowl.

TEXAS IS SUGAR BOWL WINNER
NEW ORLEANS – The Texas Longhorns cash in on the breaks and otherwise outclass the Alabama Crimson Tide before 72,000 in the Sugar Bowl. Bobby Layne, passing ace, dominates the play.

GA. TECH TOPS KANSAS, 20-14
MIAMI – In the Orange Bowl, the Georgia Tech Engineers recover a last minute Kansas fumble to retain a six-point lead before 60,000 fans. Passes by Still account for all Tech tallies.

TRUMAN OPENS CONGRESS:
CALLS FOR $40 TAX CUT
WASHINGTON – Calling for a $40 income tax cut for everybody and urging adoption of the Marshall Plan, Pres. Truman opens Congress. He renews his price curb plea and calls for a fight against inflation in his State of the Union message.

MARINES TO MEDITERRANEAN
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – In full battle dress, equipped with modern fighting weapons, 1,000 Leathernecks sail on board two transports for the Mediterranean. They’ll bring U.S. warships off Italy and Greece up to full fighting strength.

EAST-WEEST GRID CLASSIC
SAN FRANCISCO – All-American Johnny Lujack sparks a hard-riding East All-Star team to victory in the annual Shrine charity classic. 60,000 fans see Lujack score one touchdown and set up four others with his passes.

NORSE SKIERS WIN MEET
BEAR MT., N.Y. – The first major ski jump of the season, the Torger Tokle Memorial event, is dominated by Norwegian champs, including young Art Tokle. Some spectacular jumping, and spills, too!

GOLDEN GLOVERS BATTLE
BROOKLYN –There’s action, plenty of swinging fists, and even a bit of slow ballet when the fighters get tired, during Golden Gloves elimination bouts. Everything from dynamic action to humorous resting on the ropes!

N.Y. BONUS CHEERS VETS
ALBANY – Issuance of New York State’s bonus to its ex-servicemen is speeded up, with Gov. Thomas E. Dewey himself handing out the first check to a lucky veteran.

MARSHALL URGES PASSAGE OF PLAN
WASHINGTON – Warning that the “situation is critical in the extreme” in Europe, State Secretary George C. Marshall testifies on behalf of his plan before Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Marshall says that the shooting war has not stopped, and urges speedy passage of recovery program.

FRENCH MOVIE REDS PROTEST
PARIS – Left wing actors, writers and technicians stage protest demonstration against importation of U.S. films. Police swing into action to break up the ranks of marchers, and several persons are hurt in the melee.

FLORIDA FASHION FRILLS
MIAMI BEACH – Bathing suits or new hats? Whatever your fancy, here’s a hint for Milady who inclines towards the something new on the beach. Pretty models display some scanty new swim toggery, while others display the latest toppers for 1948.

SUN VALLEY SKI THRILLS
IDAHO – Overt a fast course on Mount Baldy, under conditions varying from bright sunlight to blinding blizzards, skiers from fourteen colleges compete in downhill and slalom events. Some spectacular spills occur.

SPECTACULAR AIR SHOW
MIAMI – New stunts thrill thousands at Miami’s 16th annual Air Maneuvers. Human pick-up of a man from the ground by a plane! Auto plane transfers! Wing walking on an old Jenny! And Army “Shooting Starts” in spectacular formations!

THE MARCH OF DIMES
WASHINGTON – As the 1948 March of Dimes drive gets underway, Pres. Truman receives a special guest at the White House. He’s Terry Tullos, 3-yr.-old polio victim from Mississippi. Margaret Truman helps Terry make the first contribution to the “Miles of Dimes.”

SAVE 46 FROM FUNERAL SHIP
NEW YORK – Forty-six survivors of the ill-fated “Joseph V. Connolly,” Army funeral ship which was abandoned after catching on fire in the Atlantic, are brought back by plane after a dramatic rescue. They tell a harrowing tale of near death.

TURKS TO GET U.S. SUBS
SAN FRANCISCO – Four U.S. submarines are undergoing repairs before being turned over to the Turkish navy. The undersea craft will pick their Turk crews at New London, where the sailors are getting intensive training.

BRITISH AIRLINER CRASH
NORTHOLT, ENGLAND – The crash landing of a British Viking transport brings death to the pilot, but his last minute efforts to avert disaster and save his plane saved the lives of all passengers.

GEN. CHENNAULT AND BRIDE
CHINA – Gen. Clare Chennault, war-time commander of the “Fighting Tiger” squadron, is shown with his wife, the former Anna Chan, Chinese reporter whom he met during the war.

SWEATER GIRLS OF 1948
CORAL GABLES, FLA. – In a tropical setting which in no wise detracts from the charms of the models, the new sweater fashions are unveiled for 1948. Milady will want to see them. Likewise the men!

WRESTLING IN HIGH GEAR
MADRID, SPAIN – When the cameraman plays tricks, a couple of beefy brawlers fly around the ring, and out of it, at double speed. The hilarious and frantic antics reach a crescendo when both fighters end up in the aisle.

THE WAR IN GREECE
GREECE – First authentic pictures of the fighting along Greece’s northern frontier. Government forces move up across the rugged mountain terrain to blast the Red rebels from besieged Konitsa. Members of the U.N. border commission inspect captured arms and equipment.

“IKE” URGES EUROPE AID
PHILADELPHIA – Receiving the Poor Richard Club’s gold medal of achievement, Chief of Staff Gen. Eisenhower tells throngs at Franklin Institute that aiding Europe’s recovery is a good investment for peace.

BATTLE FIRE IN ZERO COLD
BOSTON – Firemen battle Hub fire all night, hampered by frozen lines and low pressures. Six are injured and the damage, including loss of scarce leather, runs into the millions.

BLAST RIPS WAREHOUSE
CHICAGO – A blast that literally blows a four-story building apart causes three deaths and injuries to many others. A gas leak is blamed for the explosion which showers tons of debris into the street.

FILMLAND AIDS DIMES DRIVE
HOLLYWOOD – The dimes begin marching in the motion picture capital, with a colorful parade with pretty girls and helium-filled favorites. Governor Warren contributes his dimes as the campaign begins.

DEATH ON SKI JUMP
FOX RIVER GROVE, ILL. – The death of a contestant mars the Norge Ski Meet on Norge Hill. Injured during a spill, of which there were many, Jimmy Henriksen dies. A spectacular leap of 194 feet wins.

MUSIC CZAR TAKES STAND
WASHINGTON – Appearing before House Labor Committee, James Petrillo defends his control of union musicians. When asked if he doubted President’s opinions on the HCL, Petrillo says Mr. Truman is potential member of the union. “He plays the piano.”

ROCKET CAR HITS 1,000
MUROC, CALIF. – A rocket-powered sled, running along the ground on rails, cracks the speed-of-sound barrier during spectacular tests by Northrup engineers. The unmanned vehicle hits 1,019 m.p.h.

HARMONICA HARMONIZERS
GERMANY – Twenty musicians, playing 400 harmonicas in rapid succession, present an amazing rendition of “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” It’s quite a sight, and sound, to see and hear these artists at work.

PIN-UPS IN THE SWIM
CORAL GABLES, FLA. – A bevy of Pin-Up girls, Florida style, parade a few of the new eye-filling bathing suits. They’re brief and they’re alluring, the suits that is. The girls are alluring, too.

STRIP TEASE ON A LOG
CHICAGO – Marietta Terrill’s strip-tease on a whirling log, delights spectators at the Sportsmans’ Show at the Coliseum. Marietta gets dunked.

WORLD’S BIGGEST SKI SCHOOL
SNOQUALMIE, WASH. – Novices and experts alike come by the thousands to the Snoqualmie Pass Ski Bowl, to perfect their techniques under Ken Syverson and his 36 instructors. More than 3,000 are enjoying the free lessons.

CLAY WARNS OF GERMAN UNREST
WASHINGTON – Home to ask Congress for greater aid to allied zones in Germany, General Lucius D. Clay, American commander, warns that if food shortages continue, communists may stir up greater trouble and harm our recovery program.

GANDHI FAST BRINGS AMITY
DELHI – The prospects of Hindu-Moslem amity seem closer at hand, as India’s famed spiritual leader ends his fast. The intense emotional reaction of relieved followers is shown in these films.

GOODWILL MILK SHIP SAILS
CALIFORNIA – Tons of canned milk and clothing, donated by Californians for needy children overseas, are loaded on board the “California Milk Ship.” Gov. Warren takes part in dockside ceremonies and parade.

U.S. INFO PROGRAM BACKED
WASHINGTON – Congressmen Smith and Mundt explain their joint bill strengthening the “Voice of America” information program. They say newsreels, too, will help tell our story to the world.

DIGS FOR PIRATE TREASURE
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FLA. – Searching for hidden pirate gold, Octogenarian George Mobley is digging in the city streets. He uses first a divining rod, and then a giant scoop goes to work. So far… only sand.

MASS CHINESE WEDDING
SHANGHAI – Because of a government edict forbidding single ceremonies, mass weddings are in vogue. In the first under the new rule, fifty-four couples are married, and it’s a colorful affair.

ICE-BOAT REGATTA
HAMILTON, ONT. – Thrills and chills on ice! During the International Ice-Boat Regatta on Hamilton Bay, one boat cracks up, while the others set new speed records. It’s one of Winter’s thrills deluxe!

DIAMOND ACES IN THE ROUGH
BARTOW, FLA. – Over 300 ambitions youngsters are attending baseball school run by George Sirnweiss of the Yankees. Big name players serve as instructors for the diamond hopefuls.

COLD WAVE GRIPS EAST
NEW YORK – The long cold spell which covered the nation brings hardships to home owners along the upper Hudson River. Fuel barges are held back by the ice, so the Coast Guard cutter “Eastwind” battles the thick floes to open up a passage.

LEAP-FRONG BARGE TESTED
CALIFORNIA – A barge that “walks” ashore and across land with a novel “leap-frog” motion, is demonstrated by Navy engineers. The amazing craft, made of three pontoons, can carry a 60-ton load.

FAMILY OF 9 IN FIREHOUSE
ISLAND PARK, L.I. – A family of nine, provided temporary shelter after their home burned down, is still there after 90 days, and the firemen haven’t had a “social” since. But the youngsters love it!

FIREPROOF DOOR TESTED
SOUTH RIVER, N.J. – A new type door, insulated with a new material, resists a one hour blaze in a demonstration. An ordinary door burns through quickly, while the war-tested door withstands the flames.

ST. BERNARDS BY THE SCORE
NEW YORK – Twenty-six St. Bernard pups, born of three mamas all on the same day, is something of a record. They keep their mistress busy. Twenty-six wagging tails and 26 very hungry mouths!

“DOUBLE LIFE” FASHIONS
NEW YORK – The combination of new all wool styles for Milady and attractive models with pretty smiles proves eye-filling and sigh-provoking. They’re inspired by “A Double Life,” starring Ronald Colman.

SKI JUMPERS TAKE OFF
DUBUQUE, IOWA – The Longview Ski Club’s mid-winter ski jumping classic provides plenty of excitement and spills for the spectators, along with a pretty Snow-queen and her maidens. Art Tokle and Arne Ulland, both of Norway, tie with leaps of 192 feet.

CHUTISTS BATTLE SNOW
PINE CAMP, N.Y. – Dropping out of a sub-zero sky from flying box-cars, 500 seasoned troops of the 82nd Paratrooper Division ‘chute down to snow-covered terrain. Guns and supplies are dropped, and it’s a grueling test of human endurance and modern equipment.

LABRADOR MERCY MISSION
LABRADOR – Into the frozen wilds of Labrador, 150 miles north of Goose Bay, a ski-plane flies and lands with food and medical supplies for villagers isolated when fire swept the tiny settlement at Nakkovik.

FOUR ARE NOW NINE!
GALVESTON – Birthdays at the Badgett home are four times as exciting as usual, and especially when the Badgett “Quads” – Joan, Jeraldine, Joyce and Jeanette – celebrate their ninth birthday.

LARGE SET OF SETTERS
ENGLAND – Three year old “Trixie,” an Irish setter, has contributed to Britain’s production drive by producing 15 setter pups, cuddly bundles of fur and quite a catering problem to everybody concerned.

GENISSIAT, FRANCE – A huge new dam across the Rhone River promises power and production for the entire river valley. Industry Production Minister Lacoste presses a button which lowers the spill gates and the river is tamed.

SKI ACE JUMPS 262 FEET
LEAVENWORTH, WASH. – Arne Ulland, Norse ski-jumping champ, tops a large field of entrants on “Big Hill,” with a prodigious leap of 262 feet. Other jumpers top 200 in the spectacular winter tourney.

N’WEST ICEBOAT REGATTA
WILLIAMS BAY, WISC. – One of winter’s fastest thrills, ice-boating, shares the sporting spotlight, as warmly-dressed skippers pilot their speeding craft on Geneva Lake. When an ice-boat skids… watch out!
