“IKE” SEES NO GLOBAL WAR
WASHINGTON – Gen. Omar Bradley takes the oath of office as Army Chief of Staff from his predecessor, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower. Gen. “Ike” says he does not believe Russia has the productive capacity to wage global war. He also backs military training. Pres. Truman and Secretary Royall attend ceremony which marks “Ike’s” retirement to civilian life.

“PARA-DOGS” IN ARCTIC TEST
LABRADOR – Dropping dogs by parachute, the newest operation to rescue fliers downed in the Arctic wilds, is demonstrated by a joint U.S.-Canada mission. An entire team of sled-dogs is dropped from a plane, and they prove their worth for rescue roles.

U.S. THIRD IN OLYMPICS
SWITZERLAND – As the 1948 Winter Olympics draw to a close American contestants sweep several events and come within a few points of the leading Swedes. Mrs. Gretchen Fraser, Dick Button, the bobsled teams and others win laurels for Uncle Sam. Barbara Ann Scott of Canada triumphs. Some spectacular downhill skiing is shown.

CHARRO DAYS FESTIVAL
BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – the color of Texas and Mexico combined makes a magic spectacle for the 11th annual Charro Days Festival, with a colorful parade and beard-growing contest highlighting the affair.

ST. MORITZ – Ice hockey and figure skating share the spotlight as the 1948 Olympic Games draw to a close in the Swiss Alps. The Belgian boy and girl skating team with new laurels, while the Canadian hockey team triumphs over Switzerland.

“CINDERELLA” WEDS OIL HEIR
PALM BEACH – Eva Sears, the pretty divorcee who leaves her Third Avenue flat and moves to a Park Avenue penthouse, marries her “Prince Charming.” Winthrop Rockefeller, at palatial Guest mansion.

DEWEY URGES PLAN FOR PEACE
BOSTON – Speaking at Lincoln Day dinner. Gov. Thomas Dewey of New York urges a stronger U.S. foreign policy and attacks the Truman administration for what he terms “do-nothing” policies which lead to war.

ICE & FLOOD MENACE WEST
KENTUCKY – Turbulent flood waters and ice-choked rivers take their toll in eight states. Scores are dead and thousands homeless as thaws break up the ice and send it crashing with terrific force downstream.

CANADA REFINERY BURNS
TORONTO, ONT. – Firemen battle a half million dollar refinery blaze which rages with spectacular fury through the night. Next day, thick ice bampers the fight and covers everything, wreckage and equipment.

Once again America is reminded that Brotherhood is the hope of the world for peace. Gen. Eisenhower adds his voice to the plea for harmony among all races, creeds and colors.

ICE CHOKED RIVERS
The mild Potomac menaces shipping and homes as it piles ice high on the banks near the nation’s Capital. Near Cleveland, many small boats are destroyed when huge floes of ice smash into anchorages.

PENN. “QUADS” TAKE BOW
LATROBE, PA. – Quadruplets, three girls and a boy, pose for their first pictures following their birth to the wife of a factory worker. Incubators serve as cribs for the tiny tots.

YOUNGEST DEPORTEE LEAVES
NEW YORK – Sixteen month old Neils Rebholz of Chicago, pawn in a citizenship mix-up, goes back to Denmark by plane to visit his grandma for a year and then re-enter the U.S. as a regular immigrant.

GOLDEN GLOVES FINALS
NEW YORK – Knock-outs and slambang action, bruising fists and jarring blows! You’ll see them all in finals of the Golden Gloves boxing tourney at Madison Square Garden, where young hopefuls slug it out for regional honors.

HOCKEY BATTLE ROYALE
NEW YORK – When the Toronto Maple Leafs and the N.Y. Rangers fight to a 4-4 tie, there’s not a dull moment for the fans. Nasty spills and bruising action, and tempers flare to the boiling point.

TRUMAN KEYNOTES 1948 CAMPAIGN
WASHINGTON – Firing the opening gun in the Democratic 1948 campaign, Pres. Truman is guest speaker at the Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner. He calls for progressive liberalism and challenges all groups to fight inflation, and to join in his ten-year program of prosperity.

U.S. FOOD FOR CHINA
SHANGHAI – American relief flour arrives on the S.S. California and is quickly unloaded by sweating coolies. At Pieping, thousands of pitiful refugees stand in line for a meager hand-out of rice.

COLORFUL RIO FIESTA
RIO DE JANEIRO – Carnival time in Brazil! Gala crowds dance in the streets, as King Momo and Queen Aimee rule supreme. At night, colorful floats and traditional dances draw more merrymakers.

FLOODS IN ANDALUSIA
SPAIN – Torrential Spring rains have brought floods to Seville and other towns in Andalusia, causing damage and making thousands homeless. Dikes are breached as the swollen rivers swirl through villages.

THE MECHANICAL JACKASS
SATTLE – An amazing hill-climbing machine, called the “mechanical jackass” by its builder-inventor, clambers up poles and over logs with uncanny agility. It can lug 400 pounds a trip.

FILM STAR IN RED CROSS APPEAL
Gregory Peck makes an appeal for U.S. support as the annual Red Cross drive gets underway. Films of past disasters show the vital role the Red Cross has played in alleviating tragedy and suffering.

SPANISH BILLIARD CHAMPION
BARCELONA – Isidoro Ribas, billiard champion deluxe, demonstrates some of the amazing shots and stunts which have made him famous. Rihas shows some truly spectacular shooting as the ivories respond to his artistry.

PALESTINE CRISIS
LAKE SUCCESS – Faced with the urgent problem of partition and bloodshed in Palestine, the United Nations begins intensive debate. Warren Austin presents the U.S. stand to the Security Council.

JERUSALEM – In the worst attack since the decision to partition Palestine, 52 persons are killed and hundreds injured when bombs crumple buildings in the Jewish shopping district.

AT SEA – Dramatic pictures taken on board refugee ship! A British plane flies overhead, a warship is sighted. Then comes arrest and the saddened refugees head for concentration camps.

TRUMAN TOURS CARIBBEAN
WEST INDIES – Leaving political cares behind Pres. Truman visits Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, by air and by yacht. Hugh throngs turn out to greet him as he sees scenic high spots and talks with island administrators.

WALLACE AND RUNNING MATE
WASHINGTON – Henry A. Wallace, candidate for president on a third party ticket, greets his running-mate Sen. Glen Taylor of Idaho. The former Vice-President sees a surprise coming in November.

GEN. “IKE” DONS MUFTI
WASHINGTON – General Eisenhower, retired Chief of Staff, who’ll take over at Columbia University soon doffs his uniform and poses in civilian clothes. Mrs. Eisenhower helps him with his tie.

JAP BLACK MARKET RAIDED
TOKYO – Prodded by the military government, police raids on Tokyo black market centers are meeting with real success. Swooping down on busy shopping district, police confiscate immense amounts of illegal goods and arrest hundreds.

MRS. TAFT MEETS THE PRESS
WASHINGTON – Mrs. Robert A. Taft, wife of one of the leading Republican contenders, gives her views on many subjects during a radio quiz show. She discusses our relations with Russia, and says that her husband has glamour.

EASTER BONNETS TAKE BOW
NEW ORLEANS – Preceded by a glittering float parade, the nation’s top hat designers stage a monster Spring preview at Jackson Park. The tricky bonnets are named for New Orleans wonders, and the lassies under the wide brims are wonderful.

TALON WINS $100,000 RACE
ARCADIA, CALIF. – Horse racing’s richest purse, the $100,000 added Santa Anita Handicap, goes to the favored Talon, as 62,000 fans brave bad weather to witness the thrilling classic. On Trust is nosed out at the wire in a photo finish.

THE WORLD CRISIS
WASHINGTON – Protesting the communist overthrow of his government, Juraj Slavik, Czech ambassador, resigns his post and closes the embassy. At Herndon, Va., Ferene Nagy, exiled Hungarian premier, says Czech coup followed pattern set by Reds in his country.

LAKE SUCCESS – The Security Council of the United Nations deliberates the pressing question of partition and strife in the Holy Land. Guards are forced to oust an overly-obstreperous woman spectator.

PREMIERE AIDS HEART FUND
NEW YORK – A special benefit of U.I.’s “Naked City,” produced by the late Mark Hellinger, draws a capacity audience and raises $150,000 for the New York Heart Campaign. Ed Sullivan, Milton Berle and others lend their talents for the colorful premiere.

IRISH TOP N.Y.U. CAGERS
NEW YORK – Snapping the Violet’s winning streak at 19 straight, the Notre Dame basketball team defeats N.Y.U., 64-59, in a near-riot atmosphere before 18,000 fans. It’s rough and tough all the way.

DEATH MARS SKI JUMP
IRON MOUNTAIN, MICH. – Fatally injured during the 13th annual Ski Tournament on Pine Mountain, Mitchell Ronning of St. Paul dies soon after. Other jumpers take terrific spills but escape serious injuries.

TAMPA – As the baseball season approaches, the Cincinnati Reds limber up at spring training camp under Manager Johnny Nenu.

SAROSOTA – The Boston Red Sox, now under former Yank mentor Joe McCarthy, warm up. Ted Williams wallops a few.

CANADA WINTER TROOPS IN YUKON
YUKON TERRITORY – The Canadian Army sends specially trained ski troops on “Exercise Haines.” Fighting both the cold and a lack of supplies, the troops learn to become self-sustaining on the long overland trek in the northland.

GREEKS REORGANIZE ARMY
ATHENS – Greece speeds the re-organization of its armed forces to combat the guerillas. King Paul reviews units of the Navy, and sees graduating class of Greek “West Point” take oath of loyalty.

CHINA GETS JAP REPARATIONS
SHANGHAI – The first shipment of Japanese reparation goods arrives by ship, and hundreds of tons of much needed machinery are unloaded and processed for distribution. Total reparations will amount to millions of tons.

DE VALERA ARRIVES IN U.S.
NEW YORK – Eamon De Valera, former Eire Premier who was recently defeated after serving for sixteen years, arrives by plane and is met by Grover Whalen and others. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

BILLIARD CHAMP WINS AGAIN
CHICAGO – The World’s Championship Challenge Matches at Navy Pier bring Willie Hoppe and Ezequiel Navarra, Argentine see, together for a breath-taking round of three cushion billiards. Hoppe retains his crown.

CANADA HAILS BARBARAA ANN
MONTREAL – It’s a gala welcome for Barbara Ann Scott, figure skating queen, when she returns by plane from her European triumphs. She answers a question many people have been waiting to have answered: Hollywood?

NEWS FROM TRAINING CAMPS
ST. PETERSBURG – The championship N.Y. Yankees get in shape for another big season, with Joe Dimaggio and company working out under Mgr. Harris.

LOS ANGELES – The Chicago Cubs, also sixth in 1947, are counting on newcomer Cliff Chambers to help them up the league ladder.

PASADENA – The Chicago White Sox, in sixth place last year, look to new pitcher Haynes for a better 1948 season.

CHILE CLAIMS ANTARCTIC LAND
ANTARCTIC – An expedition headed by Chilean President Gonzalez Videla claims title to a slice of the South Polar continent. Two bases are visited by the party, on board a naval convoy, and Mrs. Videla makes the trip.

CELEBS ARRIVE ON “QUEEN”
NEW YORK – Ex-King Michael of Roumania, ousted by the Reds, arrives on the “Queen Elizabeth” for U.S. tour. Among celebrities also arriving are J. Arthur and Mrs. Rank; and Dick Button, U.S. figure skater champ.

RECORDS LOST IN JAP FIRE
TOKYO – Important documents dealing with purge of undesirables are lost, along with several government offices, in a blaze fed by high wind. Firemen are hampered by low water pressure, as holocaust rages for hours.

12 DEAD IN PLANE CRASH
CHICAGO – Twisted and flame gutted wreckage of four engine airliner is a gruesome tomb for twelve passengers and crew. Only one person escaped alive when Miami bound craft plunged to earth during takeoff.

HARDWARE EASTERHATS
SAN MATEO, CALIF.- Easter hats made from pots and pans and assorted kitchen utensils attract attention from the ladies. Designer Al Colby, devised tinpan toppers to kid the gals but they get last laugh.

SNOQUALMIE, WASH.- Arne Ulland, Norwegian ski champ, wins the National Championships on Olympian Hill. Ulland’s leap of 280 feet tops a big field, with some hair-raising spills taking place.
