SAGA OF THE SEA

CAPTAIN WINNING FIGHT TO SAVE SHIP:
IN THE ATLANTIC – First films of the dramatic saga of man against the sea. Capt. Henrik Carlsen sticks with his ship, the freighter “Enterprise,” broken and listed after a hurricane hit her. With a British tug finally getting her in tow, the “Enterprise” and her valiant skipper are heading for Falmonth – and triumph.

CHURCHILL HERE FOR TALKS:
NEW YORK AND WASHINGTON – Britain’s dynamic Prime Minister arrives on the “Queen Mary” for a brief New York welcome, then flies to Washington for top-level discussions on vital subjects affecting Britain and this country. At aiport, where Pres. Truman greets him, Mr. Churchill speaks eloquently for harmony and close bonds between his country and ours.

THE WAR IN INDO CHINA:
INDO CHINA – Emperor Bao Dai visits the fighting front along the Black River, where heroes of years of fighting against the local communists are decorated. Planes form the U.S. bomb Red positions, amid reports that Red China plans to invade Indo China.

“IKE” HAT IN RING:
WASHINGTON – Senator Lodge tosses Gen. Eisenhower’s hat into the G.O.P. ring during press conference at Ike-For-President headquarters. The Senator says that the General is a Republican, and therefore his name will be entered in New Hampshire primary.

HERO’S WELCOME FOR CARLSEN:
ENGLAND – It’s a hero’s welcome for Capt. Kurt Carlsen of the “Flying Enterprise.” The doughty skipper who stuck with his crippled freighter for 13 days is overwhelmed by the reception tendered him at Falmouth. Spectacular films of the sinking of the stricken ship, plunging to the bottom in 240 feet of water.

“WINNIE” IN CANADA:
OTTAWA – Arriving from the U.S., the British Prime Minister looks hale and hearty as he begins a short visit in the Dominion. Prime Minister Saint Laurent greets the venerable statesman who directs the destiny of the Empire.

PLANE CRASH IN RIVER:
NEW YORK – Crash landing in the East River in a fog, a twin-engined airliner sinks with only its tail and one wing-tip showing. Thirty-three passengers and crew of three miraculously escape with their lives due to prompt action by rescue boats.

HOUSE WITH THE CREEPS:
OAKLAND, CALIF. – Owner removes his belongings and prepares to flee as rains weaken foundation, causing house to slip ten feet from its hilltop site. Another day may see the house topple into street below.

STORM LASHES SPAIN:
SAN SEBASTIAN – Waves of tidal wave proportion lash the coast near this Spanish resort, sending hundreds fleeing for their lives and causing terrific damage. Seawalls are crumpled by the fury of the raging sea.

SKATERS OVER THE BARREL:
GROSSINGER, N.Y. – The world’s barrel jumping contest provides thrills and spills for the fans, as U.S. and Canadian jumpers risk their necks on the ice. Several spectacular upsets are recorded during the event.

SNOWBOUND

HUNDREDS SAVED FROM STALLED TRAIN:
CALIFORNIA – Dramatic scenes of the rescue high in the Sierras at historic Donner Pass. Hundreds of passengers and crewmen of Streamliner stalled for days by blizzards are finally rescued as Army vehicles and plows break through in the nick of time.

CONGRESS HEARS CHURCHILL:
WASHINGTON – A joint session of Congress hears the visiting Prime Minister of England request American steel for Britain’s rearmament program, along with plea for unity in face of Red aggression. Mr. Churchill says he has not come asking for money.

NEW YORK HAILS CARLSEN:
NEW YORK – The Big Town puts on its biggest welcome – a traditional ticker-tape parade of heroes – for Captain “Stay Put” Carlsen, skipper of the ill-fated “Flying Enterprise.” Thousand cheer the modest hero during triumphal Broadway parade.

KOREA PRISON CAMP:
KOREA – In sharp contrast to conditions of our prisoners held in communist prison camps, late films show humane treatment accorded Communist prisoners in South Korea compound. Red truce negotiators are stalling talks on prisoners fearing desertions to U.N. allies.

BRITISH ROUND UP SUEZ TERRORISTS:
EGYPT – With tension mounting between Britain and Egypt, violence flares increasingly along the vital waterway linking East and West. British troops round up terrorists in Suez area, in vicinity of slaying of American nun during guerrilla attack.

RAIN AND SNOW CRIPPLES WEST:
CALIFORNIA – Rain, snow and mud wreak havoc in many parts of the West Coast. In the mountains, blizzards have halted trains and auto traffic, while in the lowlands, days of rain have washed out homes and buries autos under feet of mud.

PLANE CRASHES ON POST:
SACRAMENTO – Six soldiers are dead in exploding wreckage of crippled B-25 bomber which crashes onto guard house of Army post, then exploded minutes after crew of plane was brought to safety. Wide area is obliterated by blast.

ICE BOATING THRILLS:
MADISON, WISC. – In sight of State Capitol, big fleet of Jack Frost ice boats gets away in annual regatta on Lake Monona. There’s plenty of zip and go in winter’s colorful sailing classic.

AFRICAN VOLCANO ERUPTS:
AFRICA – The largest volcano in the French Congo, relatively obscure and unknown, presents a fiery, forbidding appearance as it goes on a rampage during visit of newsreel cameraman. Shower of molten lava is visible for miles.

SKI BIRDS SOAR IN MEET:
CARY, ILL. – Art Devlin and other top-notch jumpers compete in the Norge Ski Club’s big meet on Norge Hill. Olympic hopefuls farewell on the fast slope, but plenty of novices come to grief on the snowy hill.

FLOATING CORN STORAGE:
HOLLAND – Where to store a vast supply of corn while new warehouses are being built? Why in canal boats, that’s where. Dutch housewives go about their household chores, atop millions of bushels of precious grain in novel storehouse at sea.

COMMUNION BREAKFAST:
NEW YORK – Members of the motion picture industry gather for the 2nd annual Communion Breakfast at the Waldorf, following Mass at St. Patrick’s. The Rev. James Keller of the Christopher movement is the principal speaker.

20 DEAD IN N.J. AIR CRASH:
ELIZABETH, N.J. – Flaming death from the skies! Second N.J. air crash in 38 days claims lives of 29, six of them inhabitants of homes demolished when twin-engined airliner plummets to earth during instrument landing at Newark Airport.

WORLD’S COSTLIEST DRESS:
NEW YORK – A $100,000 gown covered with 100,000 pearls and weighing 30 pounds, is modeled by film actress Gloria Swanson, during special charity showing for the Damon Runyon Fund for Cancer Research.

KEFAUVER HAT IN RING:
WASHINGTON – Senator Estes Kefauver of Crime Investigation fame announces his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Wife and child join Senator during his press announcement.

KID FASHIONS IN DENMARK:
COPENHAGEN – Cute Danish youngsters stage a colorful style showing, with the accent on youth. The tykes are all smiles as they strut their stylish stuff before delighted grownups.

FLYING CONGRESSMAN HOME:
SAN FRANCISCO – After a globe-girdling flight of 35,000 miles, Rep. Peter Mack of Illinois returns with a new concept of international relations. Former Navy flier, Mr. Mack flew in from Honolulu.

DUTCH SKATERS IN TRAINING:
OVERVEEN, HOLLAND – It’s hard to determine just what these athletes are doing in the woods, but you soon decide they’re getting in shape for the winter Olympics. Dutch skaters, far from the ice!

U.S. FLEET IN SPAIN:
VALENCIA – First visit by U.S. naval vessels since Franco came to power finds carrier “Roosevelt” and other units of 6th Fleet getting warm welcome for hospitable Spanish, who visit various warships.

DOGGY SOCCER MATCH:
PARIS – Trained Boxer dog amaze first-nighters with a doggy exhibition of soccer. Trainer who doubles as referee is busy guy keeping balloon in front of his amazing pooches.

MRS. FDR VISITS FRANCE:
LANNOY, FRANCE – Mrs. F.D. Roosevelt pays a sentimental visit to this French town near the Belgian border, home of ancestral home of the Delano branch of the Roosevelt family.

MISSISSIPPI INAUGURAL:
JACKSON – A colorful parade of marching men and dazzling floats precedes the colorful inaugural ceremony of Gov. elect Hugh L. White of Columbia. He succeeds Fielding Wright.

CRISIS IN EGYPT:
EGYPT – Focal point of crisis for the West, the ancient Land of the Nile seethes with unrest and violence. On the one hand the British are standing fast to protect their rights to the Suez Canal. On the other, nationalistic feeling runs high in Egypt, with King Farouk summoning a new government to cope with riots and bloodshed.

INDO REDS REPULSED:
INDO-CHINA – French-led Vietnam forces, aided by low-flying American made planes dropping napalm bombs, score a major victory over the communist near Hanoi. Meanwhile, back in Algeria, French paratroopers, trained in American planes and methods, train for future action in Into-China. At Saigon, Indo-Chinese capital city, square is bloody shambles following blast of Red mine in auto. Scores are killed.

TAFT BLASTS FOREIGN POLICY:
NEW YORK – Highlights of the 45th Millrose Games. “Flying Parson” Bob Richards fails to break old meet mark in the pole vault. Thrilling finish of the “600” – with Chuck Moore and George Rhoden spilling after the finish. The Wanamaker Mile, feature of the meet, with old rivals Don Gehrmann and FBI-Man Fred Wilt doing it again – Gehrmann overtaking Fred in the last 20 yards to win.

WINTER CARNIVAL:
ST. PAUL – King Boreas 16th presides over nine-day Winter Carnival, where Dionne Quints are guests of honor and colorful float parade preceeds mammoth Square Dance.

EGYPT TORN BY CRISIS:
EGYPT – Despite bloody riots that bring death to scores and flaming destruction to many famed landmarks, hopes for an amicable settlement of the thorny Suez problem rise in the land of the Nile. At the height of the fighting, British troops blast Egyptian police from their barricades.

PREMIERE HAILS OREGON CENTENNIAL:
PORTLAND – Oregon’s “Covered Wagon Centennial” is hailed by the premiere of Universal-International’s great new pioneer epic, “Bend Of The River,” starring James Stewart. Film salutes brave pioneers who crossed mountains to settle lovely country.

FLOODS HIT FOUR STATES:
WEST VIRGINIA – West Virginia and three other states are hard hit by pre-season floods along the rampaging Ohio River. Only by aerial survey could pres. Truman get a first-hand picture of the devastation caused by the rapidly rising waters.

CARNIVAL SPIRIT IN AIR:
VIAREGGIO, ITALY – On the eve of Carnival, artisans join forces to create grotesque figures out of papier-mache. Soon the weird statues will look down on thousands of pre-Lenten revelers in carnival parade.

FASHION AIDS POLIO DRIVE:
NEW YORK – Helen Hayes, Mrs. MacArthur and other celebrities attend swanky style showing aiding the current “March of Dimes” drive. Sarah Churchill serves as model for the colorful affair in the name of sweet charity.

WATER SKI ARTISTRY:
CYPRESS GARDENS, FLA. – Dick Wyatt and Willa McGuire, water ski champs, display their artistry at close range. Behind speeding boat, they whirl and twirl on amazing platforms, from table top to step-ladder. Of course, it all ends in a splash!

TROUBLE IN TUNISIA:
TUNIS – Tunisia in revolt! Martial law follows sabotage and riots in the French North African protectorate. Train is wrecked in desert by Arab extremists, as French troops battle to restore order in the trouble zone. Nationalistic feeling runs high as local revolutionizes seek greater autonomy from France.

ROME IN FASHION BID:
ROME, ITALY – Rome is fast becoming one of the style centers of the world. Competing with Paris for the rich U.S. market, Italian style creators stage another impressive showing of swanky new styles for American women.

WORLD NEWS IN BRIEF:
GOV’T. PROBE – New York Republican Newbold Morris is sworn in as special assistant to Atty. Gen’l. McGrath to probe corruption in government.
JEWEL ROBBERY – New York’s sensational $100,000 jewel robbery is solved in 48 hours by astute police work. Three young robbers are quickly brought to justice.
KOREA WEST POINT – Following a rich tradition, South Korea sets up its own “West Point.” General Ridgway is guest of Pres. Syngman Rhee as Korean “cadets” strut their stuff.

THE WORLD OF SPORTS:
BACKWARD WALKER – Sensation of Rome is Mario Lelli, setting new world’s record by walking 12 miles backward in less than 3 hours.
OLYMPIC SKATERS – Members of U.S. Figure Skating team practice on Radio City (New York) rink prior to boarding plane for Oslo.
RICHEST RACE – World’s richest horse race, $187,000 Santa Anita Maturity, brings out field of nine, with five-to-one shot “Intent” coming fast to win by a whisker.
