Standing before the desk he has used for seven years, President Harry S. Truman faces a battery of newsreel cameras to say good-bye and asks the public to support the man who will assume the crushing burdens of the office, President-Elect Dwight D. Eisenhower.
CALIFORNIA ARCHBISHOP ELVEVATED TO CARDINAL BY POPE
Archbishop James Francis McIntyre of the Los Angeles Archdiocese arrives in Rome, responding to a papal summons that will elevate him to the College of Cardinals. He is presented with the official notification and is first congratulated by Francis Cardinal Spellman.
FUTURE FIRST LADY MAMIE EISENHOWER MODELS HER INAUGURAL GOWN
Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower, the forthcoming first lady, graciously models her inaugural gown for the cameras. It’s of silk taffeta embroidered with two thousand rhinestones.
159 INJURED WHEN LOCOMOTIVE CRASHES INTO TRAIN STATION
A crack train running brakeless at fifty miles an hour crashes into the station, the locomotive and one car plunging through the floor just short of the waiting room concourse. 159 were injured.
VENEZUELA ELECTS MARCOS PEREZ JIMENEZ AS PROVISIONAL PRESIDENT
The first Constitutional Assembly elects Marcos Perez Jimenez as provisional president and brilliant ceremonies attend his induction into office.
RACE BOAT JOCKEYS PUT ON HAIR-RAISING STEEPLE CHASE
Outboard motor boat jockies put on a hair raising steeple-chase as they fly through the air with greatest of ease as they take the hurdles and wind up on dry land.

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER IS INAUGURATED AS THE 34TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
In an atmosphere of solemnity sparked by gaiety Dwight D. Eisenhower is inaugurated thirty-fourth president of the United States. A cheering throng of three quarters of a million saw all or part of the colorful ceremonies.

On the dot, Mr. Eisenhower calls for President Harry S. Truman at the White House and together they ride to the capitol for the inaugural ceremonies. Vice president Nixon is sworn in first and is followed by President Eisenhower. The keynote of his address is peace, but contains a blunt warning to aggressors. A giant parade lasting 4 hours climaxes the ceremonies.

WHITE HOUSE A BUSY PLACE AS NEW ADMINISTRATION MOVES IN
The administration high command gathers at the White House for its first full dress conference with President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Among those present is Defense Secretary Charles Wilson, overwhelmingly confirmed by the Senate after a delay caused by his General Motor holdings. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge is sworn in as chief delegate to the UN. General Maxwell Taylor, newly appointed commander of the Eighth Army in Korea, confers with the new President.
SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN FOSTER DULLES MAKES FIRST OFFICIAL STATEMENT
In his first public statement as Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles says the United States will never start a war but it will never be conquered or intimidated.
RANKING KOREAN JET ACE RETURNS HOME
Lieutenant James Low, ranking Korean jet ace, with nine MIG’s to his credit returns home to be greeted by his parents and a tumultuous welcome from the city of San Francisco.
NEW YORK CITY GIVES ITALIAN LUXURY LINER 'ANDREA DORIA' A BIG APPLE WELCOME
The big town gives the Italian luxury liner a big welcome as the 30,000-ton beauty, Andrea Doria steams up the harbor on her maiden voyage.

LUXURY LINER 'EMPRESS OF CANADA' BURNS AND CAPSIZES IN LIVERPOOL HARBOR
The twenty-thousand-ton luxury liner Empress of Canada burns to the water’s edge and capsizes in Liverpool harbor. The fire rages out of control for nine hours before the end, leaving vessel a total loss.
DUTCH SHIP 'KLIPFONTEIN' STRIKES ROCK AND FOUNDERS
Another maritime tragedy involves the 10,000-ton Dutch ship Klipfontein, which strikes a submerged rock in the Mozambique channel in South Africa. Calm seas permit the rescue of all aboard as the vessel founders rapidly.
VICE-PRESIDENT RICHARD M. NIXON PREPARES FOR SENATE DUTIES
Vice-president Nixon seizes the gavel of office and prepares for his duties as presiding officer of the Senate, while Secretary of State Dulles urges his fellow workers to do their utmost for the preservation of peace.
CITY RALLIES TO HELP POLIO VICTIM EVICTED FROM HER HOME
The city of Park Ridge, Illinois rallies to the aid of Mrs. Mary Kitsmiller, stricken with polio and evicted from her home. By public subscription a new modern home is built for her. The fashion front in New York stages a show for the benefit of the March of Dimes and in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Eisenhower responds to the Mother’s march with a contribution for herself and her mother.
