1,268 DEAD IN ALGERIAN EARTHQUAKE:
ALGERIA – The worst earthquake in 40 years devastates one of North Africa’s most fertile regions. Hardest hit is the modern town of Orleansville. In all, at least 1,268 died in the 12 second tremor, thousands more were injured and tens of thousands are left homeless.

MISS AMERICA CROWNED:
ATLANTIC CITY – 50 Miss America hopefuls are narrowed down to ten – then four – then one in the suspenseful finals of the beauty pageant. The lovely winner – California’s Lee Ann Meriwether.

SARDINES BY THE MILLIONS:
CANADA – A fish story with a difference, in the Bay of Fundy, where the tiny sardine is big business. Over 600 million a year are harvested by fisherman who practically swamp their dinghies, loading them to the gunwales with huge loads of silver fish.

HURRICANE EDNA SWEEPS COAST:
Hurricane “Edna” sweeps north just 12 days after “Carol’s” foray – and although toll is light in comparison, damages mount into the millions, and at least 18 are dead in the wake of gale winds and torrential rains.

49ERS DOWN RAMS IN PRO GRID TILT:
LOS ANGELES – 84,000 see the San Francisco ‘49ers tangle with the hometown Rams in a pro grid exhibition – a see-saw struggle all the way, with the ‘49ers Y.A. Title outstanding as they edge the Rams, 28-27.

CABINET MEETS AT SUMMER WHITE HOUSE:
DENVER – Cabinet members and military advisers fly to join the President at the Summer “White House” for top-level discussions of communism at home and abroad.

HARRISBURG – Governor John S. Fine proclaims “Pennsylvania Week,” calling for its statewide observance for the 9th year.

The statesmen of the free West search for an acceptable formula for German rearmament. Britain’s Anthony Eden stops at Bonn, on a nine-nation tour of Europe’s capital’s for talks with Chancellor Adenauer, and U.S. Secretary of State Dulles leaves on a flying trip to Germany and Britain.

AIRPORT INSTALLS CARRIER BGEAR:
ST. LOUIS – Emergency landing arrestor gear, used on Navy carriers, is installed at a commercial field for the first time. A “Banshee” jet tests the new safety device.

LATEST IN SWIM STYLES:
BEVERLY HILLS – The new look in bathing suits – sleek and supple, with curvaceous cuties stealing attention from the beach wear they’re modeling. An interesting outlook for the beaches next year.

KID STOWAWAY COMES HOME:
NEW YORK – The liner United States enters port bringing Eugene Hart, the 11 year old stowaway, back to his mother’s arms, after the adventure in which he left home with fifteen cents and wound up in England.

QUEEN VISITS SCOTS GAMES:
SCOTLAND – Queen Elizabeth and Duke Philip – Highland dress – attend the Braemar Gathering. 20,000 cheer on the contestants in highland dances and such traditional Scot sports as throwing the caber.

OUT OF THE MUDDLE:
DETROIT – A dramatic animated display points the way for America to get out of the traffic muddle. Model cities and highways revolve and slide aside to contrast old with new – an impressive glimpse of a hopeful future for the nation’s motorists.

HIGH WIRE ARTISTS THRILL MIAMI:
MIAMI – Germany’s daredevil aerialists, the Zugspitzartisten, perform their thrilling high-wire act 16 stories above city streets for charity – motorcycle riding, breath taking balancing feats – and to wind-up, the spectacular “slide for life.”

PENDLETON, ORE. – The annual Pendleton Round-up, classic of Western sport – with bucking broncos and bull-dogging events carried out by top rodeo performers – and a rip-snorting round-up of rough and tumble livestock. A thrill a second.

GEORGIA TECH TRAMPLES TULANE:
ATLANTA, GA. – Powerhouse plays, bullet passes and long runs add up to a resounding 28-0 defeat of Tulane as Georgia Tech runs wild, in a spectacular opener for the college grid season.

Highlights of the U.N. General Assembly’s opening session. The Duchess of Kent is among the international celebrities present as Secretary of State Dulles and Ambassador Lodge successfully move to bar Red China’s admission. Chosen as Assembly President is the Netherland’s Dr. Eelco VanKleffens.

WORST PARIS FIRE SINCE WAR:
PARIS – A burning grain warehouse menaces a nearby school and hospital as 16 fire brigades battle the conflagration. Total damage of the 2? hour blaze exceeds 500 million francs.

SKIN DIVERS IN NEW OIL SEARCH:
GULF OF MEXICO – Science mixes with aquatic adventure as skin divers search the sea bottom for marine plants and animals that may lead to new oil finding methods. Porpoises and exotic tropical crabs are among the fauna they don’t bring to the surface.

EDISON MEMORIAL DEDICATED:
WEST ORANGE, N.J. – In ceremonies honoring Thomas A. Edison as founder of the motion picture industry, a plaque affixed to a replica of his original studio is unveiled.

DUTCH PARLIAMENT OPENS:
HOLLAND – Amid traditional pomp and pageantry, Queen Juliana opens the new session of the States General – a stirring ceremony.

TODDLER TOGGERY:
ALLENTOWN, PA. – Fashions for the bib and bottle brigade, featuring some dapper diapers – not by Dior – but the last word in toddler toggery. Plaids, polka dots, even a flying saucer motif.

LARGEST PLASTIC BOAT SHOWN:
FORT EUSTIS, VA. – A new plastic boat, of unique honeycomb construction, is tested. The 10-ton craft is the largest of its sort – versatile and unsinkable.

SOUTH BEND, IND. – The Fighting Irish open their season, with Ralph Guglielmi starring in three touchdown plays to give new coach Terry Brennan a smashing victory over Texas.

INDO-SHINA REFUGEES FLEE REDS:
INDO-CHINA – Refugees continue to flee Red-held territory. Over a quarter of a million have been shipped Southward by French and U.S. Navy vessels – their faces dramatically testifying to the ordeal they leave behind.

MICHIGAN TOPS WASHINGTON, 14-0:
SEATTLE – The Michigan Wolverines defeat a stubborn Washington Huskies team with thrills and excitement on field continuing even after the final whistle blows.

TYPHOON TOLL PASSES 1,000:
JAPAN – Grim scenes of the aftermath of Japan’s worst typhoon since 1938, which capsized a train ferry taking a toll of over 1,000 – and wreaked added havoc ashore, burying dozens in landslides, and destroying hundreds of homes.

PROTEST TROOP WITHDRAWAL:
KOREA – Mass demonstrations protest withdrawals of U.S. and U.N. troops, demonstrations that reportedly have drawn Washington criticism. Thousands of students take part in the march.

HUNTING DOG TRIALS:
ITALY – Champion setters and pointers from all over Europe vie for honrs in international field trials. With keen noses and well trained form, the sporting dogs unerringly track their quarry.

“HORSE NIGHT” AT THE DRIVE-IN:
CALIFORNIA – “Horse night” at the drive-in. An enterprising theatre manager sets up oats and rye on the rocks and invites the equine crowd in for a special showing of U-I’s short subject, “Stallions On Parade.”

PARACHUTE CHAMPION SHOWS STYLE:
FRANCE – Parachute champion Sam Chazat demonstrates split second judgment and iron nerves with a thrilling free fall from a mile high plane, opening his chute only at the last minute.

RHODES’ PINCH HOMER WINS SERIES OPENER IN 10TH:
NEW YORK CITY – A thriller-diller finish to the opener of this year’s World Series, as the Giants and Indians go into the last half of the 10th tied 2-all. Dusty Rhodes’ breaks it up, slamming a homer with 2 on base, and that’s all for the day.

CAMDEN, N.J. – Spectacular scenes of a night fire that swept through pier and rail facilities along the waterfront. Fanned by strong winds, the blaze rages on through the night.

HOME OF THE 21ST CENTURY:
WEST COVINA, CALIF. – Here’s a “home of tomorrow,” where lights go on mysteriously, and also the most amazing stove you ever saw. Windows close automatically, in house where electronics is the master magician.
