PARADES FROM COAST TO COAST:
MIAMI, FLA. – The traditional salute to King Cotton. Hundreds of sun-tanned Florida beauties adorn some 50 fabulous floats in the 21st edition of the colorful spectacle.

PASADENA, CAL. – 1 ? million line the route of the Tournament of Roses parade, biggest in the classic event’s 66 year history. Rose Queen Marily Smuin and Miss Universe Miriam Stevenson take beauty honors.

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – The Mummers stage their colorful kaleidescope of mirth and melody. 10,000 take part in the 55th annual march, featuring 21 string hands, and countless costumes and floats – inimitable gayety.

THE BOWL GAMES:
SUGAR BOWL – Navy vs Mississippi at New Orleans. With Quarterback George Welsh at the helm, the Midshipment turn their big guns on Ole Miss, romping to a surprise 21-0 final score.

ROSE BOWL – Ohio State vs U.S.C. at Pasadena. The wettest, muddiest rose Bowl game in 21 years. The Buckeyes continue Big 10 mastery in the coast classic, trampling U.S.C. 20-7.

COTTON BOWL – Arkansas vs Georgia Tech at Dallas. Fighting hard all the way, the Razorbacks can’t hold their early lead against Georgia Tech’s powerhouse attack. Tech wins, 14-6.

ORANGE BOWL – Duke vs Nebraska at Miami. The Blue Devils, Atlantic Coast Conference champs, are just too much for Nebraska, Big 7 runners-up. The score tells the story – 34-7.

GOV. HARRIMAN SWORN IN:
ALBANY, N.Y. – Averill Harriman is sworn in as the first Democratic governor of New York in 13 years. The holder of high government posts in 3 national administrations, he pledges a bold and adventurous program.

84th CONGRESS CONVENES FOR STATE OF THE UNION MESSAGE:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Eisenhower delivers his State of the Union message to a joint session of Congress, and the lawmakers get down to business with pledges of cooperation between the Republican-controlled executive branch, and the Democrat-controlled Legislature.

ASSASSINATION IN PANAMA:
PANAMA CITY – While the tiny Republic straddling the Panama Canal mourns the late President Remon, slain by assassins at a race track, police round up suspects in the brutal slaying.

THE WORLD OF SPORT:
GOLDEN GLOVES – You’re in for slam-bang action of flying fists and knock-downs galore as young hopefuls in New York get going in early rounds of the Golden Gloves.
SKIERS ON THE WING – Top jumpers of five nations defy strong winds and swirling snow in competition at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. A flying Finn topped all others with two perfect jumps.

AVIATION IN THE NEWS:
AIR FORCE IN HOLLAND – The first U.S. Air Force unit to be located in the Netherlands stages an aerial review as it arrives at Soesterberg to assume new duties under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

NEW DELTA INTERCEPTOR – A later model of the delta-wing F-102 supersonic all weather interceptor for the Air Force proves its wings in its first public test flight.

FLORIDA GOVERNOR INAUGUARATED:
TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – Governor LeRoy Collins is inaugurated to fill the term of the late Gov. McCarty. It’s a gala day, highlighted by a colorful parade to mark the occasion.

JET TAKES OFF TRUCK:
CALIFORNIA – A new rocket attachment boosts a nine-ton Thunderjet fighter into the air from a truck mounted launcher, eliminating need for an airstrip. Spectacular success in the first test of a major innovation in military aviation.

THE NEW SHANGRI-LA holds open house for crewmen and their families, at Bremerton, Wash. The occasion, recommissioning of the carrier after 2 years’ refitting that made it the Navy’s most modern.

WEALTH FROM THE SEA adds a new industry to Venezuela’s booming economy, with the discovery of one of the world’s richest sardine fisheries in the Bay of Carioca. An average catch is about 100 tons!

PIGLETS ON PARADE, and plenty of excitement on a little Spanish farm, following a record litter of 19 baby porkers. Everybody drops other chores to help care for the piglets, national celebrities already.

ZEBRA PSYCHOLOGY under study in Germany. Does the striped equine go by sight or scent in recognizing friends? Zoo-men climb into a zebra suit to try and find out, but they can’t pull the wool over his eyes.

SPORTS

BUFFALO ROUNDUP in Canada offers exciting hunting to government sharpshooters. 500 of the 20,000 head in the world’s largest herd of bison are marked for slaughter to feed Indians and Eskimos.

SKI RECORD SET – In Austria, some of the best skiing of the season gets some of the best camera work, as Norway’s Ruste leaps 295 feet to set a new course record, and win the international competition.

U.N. CHIEF VISITS REDS IN PEKING:
U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold confers with Red China’s Prime Minister Chou En Lai in Peking, regarding the release of 11 U.S. flyers and other imprisoned U.N. personnel. In New York on his return, the Secretary General voices hope for an easing of world tensions.

ATOM SUB STARTS SEA TRIALS:
GROTON, CONN. – A new era dawns in the age of the atom as the Nautilus, first vessel powered by nuclear fission, begins its sea trials. A revolution in naval design, it’s the forerunner of many new peaceful roles for atomic power.

SEEING IS BELIEVING:
SPAIN – Midget cars fool the eye. There isn’t any camera magic, either. Try to tell the painstakingly crafted models of Senor Olivay from the full-scale prototypes, though – and you’ll be fooled more often than not.

PROBE COSTA RICA CONFLICT:
COSTA RICA – Representatives of the Organization of American States arrive to investigate charges that the Costa Rican conflict was fomented in Nicaragua. Meanwhile, four surplus U.S. fighter planes are sold at nominal cost to Costa Rica, to stave off further air strikes by the rebels.

MOTORBOAT SHOW OPENS:
NEW YORK CITY – The National Motorboat Show opens, with plenty of lovely visitors to indicate the fine points of a million dollars, plus worth of the newest and fanciest in marine architecture, from outboard cruisers for Everyman to luxurious floating palaces.

WEST WINS IN PRO BOWL GAME:
LOS ANGELES – The final football thrills of the season, as East meets West in the Pro Bowl Game. Otto Graham shines in his farewell grid appearance, but it’s San Francisco’s Tittle who stars as he leads the Westerners from behind to an exciting last quarter win, 26-19.

MILLIONTH INCHON G.I.:
KOREA – The millionth G.I. passes through the port of Inchon, en route home to the states. The lucky soldier, Sergeant First Class Robert S. Mitchell of Newport News, Virginia, rides in style to the off-shore transport.

STORMS SWEEP EUROPE:
Europe battles floods, landslides, and towering snowdrifts, in the aftermath of the worst blizzards on record. Already scores are dead, thousands homeless, while property damage reaches staggering proportions.

WHITE HOUSE PRESS CONFERENCE FILMED:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Press history is made as newsreel cameras are trained on a Presidential news conference for the first time. Now, the camera brings the audience on scene as like answers newsmen’s questions.

RECORD CROWD AT “SIX BRIDGES” PREMIERE:
BOSTON – A star-studded premier for Universal-International’s new “Six Bridges to Cross.” Tony Curtis and his wife Janet Leigh, Claudia Hall, and George Nader are among those present. A record crowd uproariously acclaims stars and picture.

NIXON “PUMPS FOR POLIO”:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At a local filling station, the slogan is “fill’em up for polio,” with Vice-President Richard Nixon acting as attendant to help launch this year’s March of Dimes campaign.

SPORTS

TYROS TANGLE IN GOLDEN GLOVES:
NEW YORK – Fistic fireworks by Golden Gloves hopefuls in the sub-novice 175 lb. class. Big lads with more fight than finesse, and some incidental and accidental humor for a cheering crowd.

EAST-WEST BASKETBALL:
NEW YORK – All star pro hoop line-ups in basketball’s annual East vs West classic. Lightning action and lots of scoring with the likes of Cousy, Sharman, Johnson, and company mixing it up. A thrill a second as the East wraps it up, 100-91.

FRANKLIN INSTITUTE GETS NICKLEODEON:
PHILADELPHIA – Keystone cops keep order as a replica of a historic Nickelodeon, forerunner of the modern movie theatre, is presented to the Franklin Institute by William Golden. Stars Rita Gam, and Charles Laughton take part in the ceremonies.

FRANCE FLOODED:
France reels under the impact of the worst flood in 31 years. Swollen by weeks of rain and snow, the Rhone and Seine rivers reach near-record levels. With the country-side inundated, Paris fights to hold back the rising waters.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
ATOM SUB DIVES, a successful climax to the thousand mile shakedown cruise of the Nautilus. It’s one of fifty successful test dives made by the nuclear powered vessel, a 55 million dollar experiment that may well revolutionize naval warfare.

BATTERED BRIC-A-BRAC, the shards and splinters of a unique 3,000 item collection of ancient Greek pottery, is painstakingly restored by Stanford students, nearly 50 years after the San Francisco earthquake, which reduced the collection to rubble.

TEN OUTSTANDING YOUNG MEN of the year are honored by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce in Louisville, Ky. Among those receiving this year’s service awards are test pilot Maj. “Chuck” Yeager, first to break the sound barrier and scholar tennis star “Ham” Richardson.

SPRING HAT FASHIONS with a trans-Atlantic twist. “This is San Francisco” is the theme of an exotic array of tricky toppers, modeled in honor of U-I’s new film musical “So This is Paris.” Dedicated to two cities, the hats are out of this world.

ENGLAND VS. ITALY IN INTERNATIONAL SOCCER:
ENGLAND – In a fast-moving, free-scoring melee, before a huge throng. Young England’s soccer all-stars show brilliant offensive teamwork to win the coveted International Trophy from a high rated Young Italy team.

NIELSON WINS MILE EVENT IN WHIRLWIND FINISH:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Track thrills at the 8th annual Evening Star Games. Art Bragg stars in the three event sprint series, Bob Richards thrills in the pole vault – but the event of the evening is the flat mile. Wes Santee and Denmark’s Gunnar Nielson battling it out in one of the season’s most memorable distance contests.

STARS HONORED AT CHARITY LUNCHEON:
NEW YORK – Great names of show business are honored by the amusement division of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. Among those on hand as Mark of Achieveement awards are made are Janet Leigh, Oscar Hammerstein, and comic Jackie Gleason.

7th FLEET READIES FOR FORMOSA CRISIS:
The mighty U.S. 7th Fleet maneuvers in the Straits of Formosa as Chinese Reds continue their thrusts at Chiang Kai Shek’s off-shore islands. One of the most delicate, dangerous international situations in recent years, in which U.S. forces may be forced to fight the security of strategic Formosa.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
DUTCH PRINCESS – On the eve of her 17th birthday, Crown Princess Beatrix undertakes her first official duty, christening an oil tanker in Amsterdam. It’s the young Princess’ first appearance alone in public.

MacARTHUR BIRTHDAY – General Douglas MacArthur’s 75th birthday is marked by the unveiling of a civic memorial in Los Angeles, honoring his World War II exploits. Speaking after dedication ceremonies, he urges the universal abolition of war.

FRENCH FLOODS – Paris is flooded as the Seine reaches its 2nd highest crest in recorded history. Elsewhere in France, scenes of inundation are repeated. Tens of thousands are homeless, enormous areas of farmland flooded throughout the nation.

FLYING BEDSTEAD – Britain’s “Flying Bedstead” revealed in tests. Its just two jet engines and a pilot mounted on a light metal framework, airborne by the enormous power of the jet engines and nothing else.

SPORTS
ROAD RACERS – 300 driving teams defy heavy weather across Europe in the marathon Monte Carlo Rally, the most grueling test of men and machines. The winner, after traversing 2,000 miles of snow, sleet and tortuous terrain, is Norway’s Per Malling.

GOLDEN GLOVES – Fisticuffs fast and furious as New York Golden Gloves hopefuls mix it up in the squared circle. Highlight of the bouts, a stratling delayed knock-out, with a double take to remember as the K.O.’d amateur suddenly gets the impact.

U.N. ISSUES FORMOSA CEASE-FIRE BID:
Russia alone votes “no,” as the Security Council agrees, 9-1, to seek a Formosa cease-fire. Red China is invited to send observers to the cease-fire sessions. In Washington, D.C., meanwhile, President Eisenhower signs a joint House-Senate resolution authorizing him to order military measures to defend Formosa if necessary.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
INDIA CELEBRATES REPUBLIC DAY with a solemn, impressive procession. A jarring note is added by enormous, unruly throngs along the line of march as the procession, including tanks and elephants, passes in review, a two hour parade.

KING BOREAS XIX REIGNS SUPREME over St. Paul, Minn.’s Winter Carnival, a frolicsome frost festival highlighted by a gala procession, resplendent costumes, rainbow-hued floats, and merriment in the streets despite near-zero weather.

NEW HELICOPTER RESCUE technique is demonstrated in England. A whirly-bird goes aloft with a huge crescent-shaped net slung from its fuselage, and scoops a life-jacketed floater from the Solent River with amazing ease.

COATS AND CARS FOR SPORTY SPRINGTIME:
NEW YORK – Sports cars and spring coats on parade. Coats to fit the occasion, with adaptability the keynote for Milady. American beauties posed against a striking back-drop of continental high-style in sports cars.

SANTAANITA MATURITY:
ARCADIA, CAL. – A 2 horse race right down to the wire in the $87,000 turf classic, with Miz Clementine first across the finish by a neck. But the jockey of second-runner Deterrmine calls foul against Eddie Arcaro – so Determine, number two, is the winner – a track turnabout.

WES SANTEE WINS HUNTER MILE:
BOSTON – 14,000 track fans turn out for the rubber meet between America’s Wes Santee and Denmark’s Gunnar Nielson. Today’s top active milers, they’ve met twice before – and divided honors. A thriller diller finish as Santee’s terrific sprint leaves the Dane yards behind, while the U.S. star goes on to set a new indoor mark.

WASHINGTON – At the 2nd filmed White House press conference, the President tells newsmen that peace is the aim of U.S. policy regarding Formosa – a new and emphatic statement on a vital international issue.

PRINCESS MARGARET IN WEST INDIES:
TRINDAD – Princess Margaret Rose makes her first visit to the Western Hemisphere, and the island of Trindad is in festive array to welcome her. She makes a charming envoy in her first good-will mission for Britain.

NEWS IN BRIEF:
OLDEST AUTOGRAPH COLLECTOR – Mrs. Netti Moulden is congratulated by Pres. Eisenhower on her 100th birthday. He signs her autograph book whose first signature is Pres. Lincoln’s.

ISRAEL BORDER INCIDENT – The grim aftermath of one brief but savage clash that is so frequent along the Israeli-Egyptian border.

VERTICAL JET TESTED – In Buffalo, a pilot model that may pave the way to jets of the future, able to hover in mid-air after vertical take-offs.

CATS ON PARADE – New York City plays host to 38th annual Championship Cat Show, with all sorts of felines feeling their mettle. Stealing the show is a kissing kitty.

ELEPHANT’S TOOTHBRUSH – Highlights Children’s Dental Health Week at Portland, Ore., where youngsters visit the zoo to teach Rosie the Elephant how to brush her teeth.

NEW YORK – Glitter and glamour of the big city mobilized to aid the March of Dimes with an ultra-swank fashion show featuring top celebrities, among them Margaret Truman and Gypsy rose Lee.
