RIOTS IN JAPAN AS U.S. JAPANESE DEFENSE PACT IS SIGNED
Leftist opposition to the U.S.-Japanese defense pact produces rioting for days on end, with fighting inside Parliament itself. A visit by President Dwight D. Eisenhower is cancelled but the pact is signed while Socialist leader Asanuma is assassinated at a public meeting.
DOWNING OF U.S. SPY PLANE OVER SOVIET UNION TORPEDOS PARIS SUMMIT
Secret reconnaissance of the Soviet Union by American U2 jets is revealed when one is downed and its pilot, Francis Gary Powers is tried in Moscow. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev uses the incident as a pretext to torpedo the Summit meeting in Paris.
HISTORIC SESSION UNFOLDS AT UNITED NATIONS
In New York, the greatest gathering of world leaders in modern times is present at the historic session of the United Nations. U.N. General Secretary Dag Hammarskjold defies Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's threats. Mr. Khrushchev shocks and startles U.N. delegates with his boisterous desk pounding.
FIDEL CASTRO TIGHTENS THE SHROUD OF COMMUNISM OVER CUBA
Fidel Castro takes Cuba further down the path of Communism and goes completely anti-American, seizing nearly all U.S. owned property in Cuba.
STRIDES MADE IN SCIENCE AND DEFENSE
Major strides in space exploration include the launching of the Tiros Weatherman Satellites, new communication systems, and the recovery of Discoverer Space Capsules from orbit. Undersea exploration takes a bathyscaphe to the deepest chasm known to man, the Marianas Trench. A milestone in national defense comes when the nuclear sub and guided missile weapons system becomes operational, and the U.S.S. George Washington goes on patrol armed with Polaris Missiles equipped with H-bomb warheads.

Dictator Fidel Castro stages the biggest military parade ever seen in Cuba, featuring modern weapons from Communist Russia. Shortly after the martial celebration of the 2nd Anniversary of his regime, Mr. Castro demands a drastic cut in personnel by the U. S. Embassy, leading to the breaking-off of diplomatic relations by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
FIGHTING IN LAOS ESCALATES BETWEEN COMMUNIST REBELS AND PRO-WESTERN FORCES
An anxious world watches the fighting in Laos between Communist rebels and pro-Western government forces as America accuses the Russians of massive Soviet aid and Russia admits airlifting supplies.

RADAR TOWER TOPPLES 28 FEARED DEAD
A vast air-sea search scours the angry waters of the Atlantic east of New Jersey, following the collapse of a storm-battered radar tower with 28 aboard. Scenes show the search, which raised hopes when sonar detected faint tappings and life aboard one of the string of towers which provide early warning radar protection for the Eastern seaboard.
ROYAL WEDDING IN NORWAY
In a setting of a gleaming snows cape, Norway's Princess Astrid, popular First Lady of the land, marries a commoner, Johan Martin Ferner, in a ceremony attended by many notables including Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones.
DESIGNER FASHIONS AND FIRST LADY JACQUELINE KENNEDY
New York's Fashion Week, which brings together buyers and writers from all parts of the country, focuses on the tastes and preferences of the new First Lady, and on the man who knows them best, designer Oleg Cassini who reveals sketches of some new creations for Mrs. Kennedy.
RUSSIANS TOP U.S. IN GYMNASTICS
Russia's team of champion Olympic gymnasts competes with an American team at Penn State University, and the Soviet stars repeat their dazzling performances of the Olympics to walk off with top honors.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:

One of the grimmest winters on the record books scourged the nation. A record sleet storm hit the Sunny South, centering on Atlanta, Ga. Gale winds and 20-below temperatures brought the Arctic to Chicago's, Loop. Record ice jams in the Delaware and the Niagara Gorge beset Trenton, N. J., and Lewiston, N.Y. The ice-bound fishing fleet harbored at Boston. And Toledo and Sandusky were well nigh paralyzed by swirling blizzards and mountainous snows.

In Ethiopia, Emperor Haile Selassie went to the front to personally lead his forces against Mussolini's legions.

JOHN F. KENNEDY SWORN IN AS PRESIDENT, NEW ERA BEGINS
John F. Kennedy settles into office as the 35th President of the United States, the youngest man and the first Roman Catholic ever elected to the office. Scenes show highlights of the ceremonials and celebrations in the capital as Mr. Kennedy takes office, starting with his smiling reception by Mr. Eisenhower at the White House.

Despite a paralyzing blizzard, hundreds of thousands are outside the capital as Vice-President-elect Lyndon Johnson and Mr. Kennedy are sworn into office. Then, with Mrs. Kennedy looking proudly on, John F. Kennedy delivers his brief but stirring inaugural message.

After lunch, the official party moves to the White House to review the thrilling three and a half hour inaugural parade. That night, president Kennedy makes the rounds of five gala inaugural balls, capping off a dazzling two and a half days that mark the beginning of a new era for the nation under the leadership of the first President born in the twentieth century.

INDIA HAILS QUEEN ELIZABETH
India greets Queen Elizabeth as she arrives for the first visit by a British sovereign in half a century. Over a million hail Elizabeth and Prince Philip in their procession through New Delhi. Later, in Jaipur, she and Philip experience an elephant ride in the style of the ancient Mogul emperors.

Britain mourns King George V, who passes away just a few months after his Silver Jubilee celebration. Scenes show the pomp and splendor of the Jubilee, the 'grief-filled' funeral observances, the Royal Family, and in America, notables paying tribute at Washington Cathedral include Mrs. Roosevelt, Vice-President Garner, Chief Justice Hughes, and Secretary of State Hull.
