The U.S. conducts its most ambitious space schedule to date as a Ranger capsule is landed on the moon and Saturn is successfully tested. Finally, he goes to the people for his medical care bill as he addresses an overflow rally in Madison Square Garden.
U.S. MARINES DEPLOYED IN CONTINUING LAOS CRISIS
Contingents of U.S. Marines land in Bangkok to bolster U.S. forces in Thailand, bringing to 5,000 the number of men the U.S. has deployed to Thailand in the Laos crisis. The country is quiet as optimism is expressed that a new coalition government can be formed.
THE RICHEST HARNESS RACE OF ALL
Ten horses compete in the Messenger Stakes with $170,000 in prize money. 'Andora's Dream' hitherto undefeated, is outpaced by “Lehigh Hanover" who pays his backers 71 to 1.
RECORDS FALL IN WEST COAST TRACK AND FIELD MEET
40,000 people jam the Coliseum in Los Angeles for the 22nd annual relays and see records topple in the discus, shot-put and the mile run. Peter Snell, the New Zealand sensation, sets a new American mile mark of 3:56:1.
