NEW U.S. SPACE TRIUMPH
Astronaut Scott Carpenter becomes the fourth American to probe outer space and the second to orbit the earth in a flight that is fraught with drama that has the world waiting an hour for news of his safe landing.

After three successful orbits, his rockets don’t fire properly and he lands 250 miles beyond the target area. With no radio contact there is no way of knowing he is safely down until finally faint signals are heard and he is picked up.
STUDENTS SPOOF SCIENCE
They dedicate a new students’ club in Delft, The Netherlands, and concoct an out-of-this-world chain reaction to set the wheels in motion and send a cyclist through the sealed door.

OUR LATEST SPACE HERO ASTRONAUT SCOTT CARPENTER
The fourth U.S. astronaut to probe outer space and the second to orbit the earth, Astronaut Scott Carpenter, returns to Cape Canaveral for the first of many roaring welcomes. He’s welcomed by his mother, wife and children and then holds a press conference in which he elaborates on details of the flight.
TORNADO HITS CONNECTICUT TOWN
Roaring in almost without warning, a tornado rips through Waterbury, causing damage estimated at upwards of a million dollars.  More than 300 homes and other buildings were wrecked in the one-minute a storm.
NEW COVENTRY CATHEDRAL DEDICATED IN ENGLAND
A new edifice rises on the ashes of the Shrine that was leveled by Nazi bombs during World War II. Queen Elizabeth is present as high church dignitaries consecrate the new Saint Michael’s.
BUCKING BRONCOS OF THE CALIFORNIA JUNIOR RODEO
The small fry take on bucking broncs, et al, in California as they fall just like grown-ups. It’s a junior rodeo with a down-to-earth atmosphere.

GRADUATES OF MILITARY ACADEMIES ARE THE NEW LEADERS OF PEACE
Annapolis, Colorado Springs and West Point are the scenes of graduation ceremonies that commission 1,675 officers in our Armed Forces. After years of grinding study, Mlddies, Air Force men and Army Kaydets get their coveted parchments. President John F. Kennedy addresses the class at West Point, while Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson does the honors at the Air Force Academy and Secretary of the Navy Fred Korth at Annapolis.

NEW COALITION IS FORMED IN LAOS
Peace appears to be returning to strife-torn Laos with the formation of a coalition government of Right Wing, Communist and Neutralist leaders. The groundwork for the agreement was set by President Kennedy and Chairman Khrushchev in Vienna last June and it will be ratified by all-factions in Geneva.
PRISON ESCAPE AT ALCATRAZ ISLAND!
The spoon proves mightier than the bars at supposedly escape-proof Alcatraz Prison as three bank robbers, serving long terms, fashion dummies for their beds and go AWOL after scratching through the cement walls of their cells. Whatever their fate, they seem to have accomplished what many others have failed to do.

The romance of the century reached full-flower 25 years ago when The Duke Of Windsor married a commoner, Wallis Warfield Simpson. He abdicated the throne of England to marry 'the woman I love'.

Prohibition had been repealed, but the WCTU was a very vocal minority when they convened in Washington. 'I won't drink, and I’ll stop you from drinking', said one.

Slammin' Sammy Snead, fresh from the West Virginia hills, had his first Open Championship in his grasp when Ralph Guldahl came through with a sensational finish to cop first money.

PRISON RIOT IN CANADA
Eleven hundred rioting prisoners set six buildings on fire in Montreal's St. Vincent de Paul Penitentiary. Thirty people are injured in the flames and fighting lasts for seven hours before both are brought under control.
UNEASY PEACE IN ALGERIA
The streets of Algeria are - at least momentarily - free of bombings and bloodshed as a peace pact is announced between the OAS and the Muslims. Bitter denunciation of the pact by the OAS in Oran and elsewhere, however, threaten to shatter the peace.
WATER SHORTAGE IN HONG KONG
The beset Crown Colony of Hong Kong, already dangerously overcrowded, faces the calamitous problem of acute water shortage. Reservoirs are running dry, and the thousands of refugees from Red China are threatened with complete water famine.
ANIMALS CROSS ALPS FOR NEW PASTURE
Herds of cattle, sheep and goats cross the Tyrolean Alps in an annual trek from their native Italian pastures to those on the Austrian side. Italian claim to the pastures creates a U.N. dilemma, but the animals make a striking picture against the snow.
GOLFER JACK NICKLAUS WINS U.S. OPEN
Jack Nicklaus takes the playoff for the United States Open Golf Championship from favored Arnold Palmer. The 22-year-old lad from Ohio State beats the master by three strokes with a score of 71.

Some of the most beautiful and fastest off-shore Yachts afloat start off from Newport, Rhode Island in the 635-mile race to Bermuda. The 131 Yachts make an impressive show running in fair breezes and a light sea.

Eastern Airlines is shut down as flight engineers seek to have their men recognized as the third man on jet planes. The pilots want the third man under their jurisdiction. It’s a walkout the President termed 'the height of irresponsibility'.
FORMER PRESIDENT DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER AND WIFE VISIT WHITE HOUSE
Mrs. Eisenhower visits with Mrs. Kennedy at the White House - her first visit since alterations' were completed. Later she  and the former President attend an outdoor breakfast in their honor.
SECRETARY OF STATE DEAN RUSK TAKES EUROPEAN TOUR
On a European tour that includes, Rome, London, Paris and Lisbon, Secretary of State Dean Rusk visits West Berlin and sees the Berlin Wall for the first time.
A ROYAL QUEEN VISITS PEN PAL IN YONKERS
Queen-Mother Elizabeth of Belgium visits 13-year-old Joey Alfidi, a composer-pianist, at his home in Westchester. They're pen pals.
NEW HOVERCRAFT IS UNVEILD IN ENGLAND
The hover-craft, running on a cushion of air, grows up as a 76-passenger bus, and is unveiled in England. It's designed for quick water communication in the British Isles.
FOUR RUNNERS CRACK THE 4-MINUTE MILE
It's the race of the decade at Walnut, California, in the AAU games. In the mile run the first four men hit the wire under four minutes. A short time ago the 4-minute mile was thought impossible.
