Delmar Racetrack, partly owned by Bing Crosby, was opened and interest in celebrities almost outran interest in the horses.

Fads have always been with us and 25 years-ago it was Paddleball, a novelty that really never died.

BERLIN WALL A CONTINUING POINT OF DISCONTENT
It was just a year ago that authorities in Communist Germany threw up their Wall of Hate in Berlin. Today, demonstrators in Free Berlin march along a Wall in protest against the barrier and hold memorial services for those who died trying to escape from East Germany.
CADETS WELCOME PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY
A well-known weekend sailor, President Kennedy, is greeted with spit and polish as he visits the Coast Guard training bark 'Eagle'.
DUTCH AND INDONESIANS SIGN PACT OVER NEW GUINEA
An agreement is reached between The Netherlands and Indonesia on the administration of New Guinea, claimed by both countries. The U.N. will administer the country until Indonesia takes over.
MT. BLANC AUTO TUNNEL
A 7-1/4 mile automobile tunnel that will cut 125 miles from the Paris-Rome route is holed through with appropriate ceremonies.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:

A huge air-sea search fails to find any clue to the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator, who were lost in the pacific.

Russian airmen were setting records 25 years ago, too. Three men set a new mark in flying over the North Pole from Moscow to Los Angeles.

The heat was setting a record and so were those who were thinking up goofy ways to beat the heat. They may not have beat the heat but they had fun trying.

On a whirlwind tour through the West, President Joh F. Kennedy takes part in conservation dam projects and visits Yosemite National Park. He presides at dedication ceremonies at the huge Oahe Reservoir project at Pierre, S.D., and the Fryingpan-Arkansas projects at Pueblo, Colorado. He winds up his busy tour at the new irrigation dam being built at Los Banos, California.
INDIA CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY
Prime Minister Of India, Jawaharlal Nehru presides at India's 15th Anniversary of Independence and tells 100,000 Indians that they must pledge themselves to fight any encroachment by Red China on their northern border.
BEAUTY IS AN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIR
'Miss Australia', a 2l-year- old beauty, is the victor over 51 other beauties in the 'Miss International' Beauty Contest. Having fled from the Reds herself, she intends to work with refugees.
ALONZO STAGG CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY
'The Grand Old Man' of football marks his 100th Birthday as dinners are held in his honor from coast-to-coast. He gave up tennis in his 80's and stopped mowing his lawn when he was 98.
RACEHORSE 'JAIPUR' WINS TRAVERS STAKES
It's a two horse race right from the start as “Jaipur" and “Ridan” battle it out together neck and neck. The pace smashes the Travers’ record set by 'Man O' War' in 1920 and equals the track record.

TWO U.S. NUCLEAR SUBMARINES MEET UNDER THE POLAR ICE CAP
The U.S. nuclear submarines 'Skate' and 'Seadragon' surface in the Arctic after a rendezvous under the polar ice cap. One came from Hawaii and the other from Connecticut. They conducted unprecedented maneuvers that point the way to a new type of warfare that could be fought in the polar regions.
RED BERLIN MOVES TO DROP COMMAND POST AND CUT TIES TO ALLIES
As the West Berliners stone a Soviet troop-carrying bus, the Russians announce that they are abolishing the post of Commandant. Meanwhile, the Allies establish an ambulance patrol to rescue wounded refugees.
SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL BACK HOME FROM HOSPITAL STAY
Sir Winston, 87, returns to his home after convalescing for 54 days in the hospital after breaking his hip.
FORMER PRESIDENT DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER VISITS SCOTLAND
Former President Eisenhower rests at his apartment in Culzean Castle, a residence that was a gift of the Scottish people.

A series of earthquakes spread over two days leave sixteen Italians dead and more than 200 injured. Most of the disturbances are centered in Ariano Irpino, 40 miles east of Naples, where 10,000 homes' had to be evacuated.
NEW UNREST IN ALGERIA AS MOBS DEMONSTRATE
With Ben Bella, dissident rebel leader, fleeing to Oran where troops support him, huge throngs demonstrate in the capital, Algeria. Some favor the ruling Political Bureau, others the leftist Army factions and still others want food and jobs.
VICE PRESIDEN LYNDON B. JOHNSON ON SIX NATION VISIT
Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson visits Lebanon and Iran on his foreign aid fact-finding trip. Lebanon, once recipient of U.S. aid, now supports itself while Iran is on the economic road to recovery.

San Jose turns back Kankakee as the California half-pints win the Little League crown from the Illinois nine. It's heads-up baseball all the way and even the losers are champs.
