Pakistan, greeting President Heinrich Luebke of Germany, expresses concern at the amount of arms promised her old rival.
FRENCH PRESIDENT CHARLES DE GAULLE WINS DECISIVE VOTE
President Charles DeGaulle wins control of the French National Assembly as the French people vote one group into power, the first time this has happened in modern history of France. It means that the country will probably have three parties instead of a dozen or so.
WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR KONRAD ADENAUER FACES STIFF FIGHT
The West German Chancellor faces the toughest battle of hls career as he jousts with the political parties he's affiliated with. A scandal over the arrest of five journalists and the blame put on his Defense Minister have led to this critical stage of his career.

At a touch of a button, 7,500,000 cubic yards of Nevada desert are blown skyward. Part of Operation Plowshare the nuclear explosion is set off to demonstrate the part that the Atom could play in digging harbors and canals at a fraction of the cost using conventional methods.
QUEEN WILHELMINA OF THE NETHERLANDS PASSES AWAY AT 82
The Queen who ruled the Netherlands for 50 years is dead at 82. Wilhelmina, who abdicated in 1948 in favor of her daughter, was a woman noted for her iron will and determination, virtues that her subjects held in highest regard.
THE EMPIRE GAMES BEGIN IN AUSTRALIA
The Australian city of Perth plays host to the 7th British Empire and Commonwealth games and 50,000 jam into Perry Lakes Stadium for the opening ceremonies with Prince Philip representing the Queen.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:

A quarter of a century ago the Japanese were moving in on Shanghai to mop up the city after a siege of 75 days. This was a preview of the war yet to come. Refugees poured into the international settlement to escape shells and bombs. A unit of Chinese got world acclaim for holding out in a warehouse to let the main body of their troops escape.

Britain and France sign a pact to finance a $300,000,000 super-sonic jet that will cross the Atlantic between breakfast and lunch! It will carry 100 passengers and fly 1,400 m.p.h. at an altitude of 40,000 feet.

Scientists from McGill University take elaborate reading on Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian arctic to make long-range weather forecasts. They can tell from the movement of glaciers whether future weather will be warmer or colder.
CHARLES TREGER FIRST AMERICAN TO WIN POLISH VIOLIN COMPETITION
Charles Treger becomes the first American to win the Wieniawski competition as he acclaimed over eleven other finalists. From the mid west, Charles is 27 and an associate professor of music.

The SAC Post in Omaha and the 'Project Rover' center in Los Alamos are visited by President John F. Kennedy. At SAC he presents a plaque recognizing the flights made during the Cuban crisis. At Los Alamos he sees the steps accomplished in developing nuclear power for spaceflight.
MIDWEST DIGS OUT AS THREE FEET OF SNOW BLANKETS OHIO
The first severe snowstorm of the season, spawned by frigid Canadian winds, paralyzes sections of the mid-west and eastern states. Traffic, of course, was the first casualty and hundreds had to be rescued. More than 50 deaths are attributed to the snow.
FINAL TRIBUTE PAID TO QUEEN WILHELMINA OF THE NETHERLANDS
All of The Netherlands is in mourning as former Queen Wilhelmina receives a final tribute. It's an all-white funeral in keeping with her belief that death is the beginning.

At his news conference President John F. Kennedy says that the air-to-ground missile, the 'Skybolt' has failed in five tests and may be abandoned. Britain is opposed to this for they are counting on it for their nuclear defense. The president also touches on the rash of spoofs of the Kennedy family.
NEWSPAPER STRIKE CAUSES BLACKOUT OF NEW YORK NEWS
New Yorkers who normally buy six million newspapers a day are without any of their nine major publications in a dispute between the publishers and seven craft unions. Out-of-town newspapers go like hot cakes but merchants are suffering through the lack of advertising.
NEW YORK PREMIERE OF HOLLYWOOD FILM 'FREUD'

VENUS PROBE A SUCCESS AND STARGAZING REACHES NEW HEIGHTS
A 180,000,000 mile odyssey began at Cape Canaveral last August when Mariner Two was sent off to a rendezvous with Venus. Now, 109 days later, the trip is a resounding success as the satellite sent back signals ready to be evaluated. Meanwhile, two men went aloft in "stargazer", a balloon designed to rise more than 80,000 feet for an atmosphere clear view of the stars.
'TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD' HAILED AS A NEW HIT
The first showing and a private one at that, 'To Kill A Mockingbird' brings acclaim of the screen translation of the American folk classic. Movie Star Gregory Peck, authoress Harper Lee and other celebrities attend the showing in Hollywood, California.

The two heads of state face two critical problems as they meet in the Bahamas. They discuss the 'Skybolt' air to ground missile that has proved an expensive failure to the United States. This was a weapon that Britain was counting on, but the two leaders decided that the "Polaris", a highly successful missile could be substituted. New trouble in the Congo is another key matter on the agenda.
FOOD AND DRUGS READIED FOR FIDEL CASTRO IN EXCHANGE FOR BAY OF PIGS SURVIVORS
Cargo planes converge on an airport near Miami loaded with medicine and food which Castro has demanded before he will release 1,100 men taken in the ill fated Bay of Pigs invasion.
60 INCH SNOWFALL AS EUROPE IS LASHED BY OLD MAN WINTER
Gales with hurricane force and smothering snow storms have swept Europe from Scandinavia to Italy. In the French Alps wind whipped snow stranded tourists, disrupted food deliveries and contributed to a score of deaths.

The Giants met the Yankees. Chuck Hiller, a Giant rookie made the first National League, 4-Run homer in series history, but the Yankees went on to win.
HORSERACING KENTUCKY DERBY
Race horse 'Decidedly' came from behind to nose out four horses including 'Admiral's Voyage' and 'Ridan', and win the Kentucky Derby. In the Preakness, 'Greek Money' dueled 'Rldan' to the wire and came out on top. The third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont, 'Jaipur' beat 'Admiral's Voyage' in a photo finish.
PRO GOLF U.S. OPEN
A new star flashed across the pro golf horizon as Jack Nicklaus won the U.S. Open Title. Arnold Palmer was to be counted out however, and he broke the record in winning the British crown.
YACHT RACING AMERICAN CUP
President Kennedy was among the spectators as the U.S. ''Weatherly'' trounced the Australian challenger 'Gretel' for the American Cup.
TRACK & FIELD
The U.S. lost a top track star when Frank Budd injured himself in the AAU IOO-meter dash. AI Oerter set a world mark in the discus throw, while other world marks were: Dallas Long, shot put and Hal Connolly, hammer throw. The great mile race run saw Jim Beatty of Los Angeles win in the stretch. The first four men to finish all broke the four-minute mile. Russia's Valeri Brumel set a new high jump record.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Cincinnati defeated Ohio State to take the basketball title for the second year in a row.
