CASTRO CAPTIVES ARRIVE IN UNITED STATES:
The return of the captives. At Homestead Air Force Base near Miami, the first of the prisoners ransomed from Castro walk down the short gangway to freedom. Five thousand relatives and friends greet the men in tearful reunions and they go to their families for private celebrations after prayers of thanks.

WALKOUT CLOSES EAST COAST PORTS:
Shipping ports from Maine to Texas are paralyzed as 75,000 dock workers leave their jobs. In New York, already hit by a newspaper strike, scores of ships are tied up and goods accumulate at the piers.

PRINCESS MARGARET DANCES WITH FOLK GROUP:
Britain's princess Margaret, noted in court circles for her love of the dance, takes part in a festival in London. The Queen's sister proves that she reigns as an exponent of folk dancing.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The desperate defense of Shanghai came to an end and refugees poured into foreign settlements by the thousands - seeking food and shelter. This was a horrible preview of what War was to become.

Russia was beefing up its air power and unveiled its first massed parachute jump.

California met Alabama in the Rose Bowl and 90,000 thrilled to a one-man offense in Vic Bottari who sparked a California victory with two touchdowns.

The worst snow storm in a decade paralyzed upstate New York. Buffalo bogged down under nearly two feet of snow.

RECORD STORM: UNITED STATES and EUROPE HIT BY BLIZZARDS:
The New Year roared in with a storm voice that was heard around the world. North America as well as Europe was subject to record breaking cold waves and snow. Bangor, Maine, was blanketed under 36 inches. In Europe, the palm trees in Barcelona, Spain, were snow covered. Britain, Ireland and Northern Europe suffered more severely. '

BRENTWOOD HOMES COLLAPSE: LANDSLIDE WRECKS WEST COAST HOMES:
Creeping disaster has spelled the doom of a dozen homes on a hillside in Los Angeles. Built on a layer of sixty-foot deep
fill, two of the homes are slipping from their foundations and threaten to carry away a dozen homes on the hill below.
All of the houses (all in the $45,000 class) have been evacuated and a heavy rain could carry a score down to the valley.

SKI MEET AT BEAR MOUNTAIN: Spectators converge on the ski jump at Bear Mountain, New York, for the 18th annual Torger Tokle Memorial Jump. Named in honor of the U.S.’s greatest skier who was killed in the War. The meet brings together the cream of the Eastern skiiers. Thrills galore before Dean Schambach winds up as King of the Hill…

CONGRESS OPENS: 12 SENATORS JOIN 88TH SESSION:
The 88thCongress convenes in Washington and faces a busy session. There are some new faces on Capitol Hill, among them are twelve new Senators. They are sworn in by Vice-President Lyndon Johnson before taking up their new duties. Among them is Edward "Ted" Kennedy, the third brother in the national political arena. House Speaker John McCormack calls the session to order.

PRICELESS SMILE: PRESIDENT LEADS MONA LISA TRIBUTE:
The President and Andre Malraux, French Cultural Affairs Minister, lead a VIP reception to the first United States exhibition of the Mona Lisa. Next day the lady with the enigmatic smile draws a first day crowd of 10,000 people who file by - four abreast.

SKY-HIGH BLAZE: FIGHT FIRE ATOP NEW YORK SKYSCRAPER:
New York's most famous landmark, the Empire State Building, is hit by a fire that proves elusive and stubborn. Traffic is snarled as firemen fight a blaze that touches nine different floors from the 24th to the 68th.

TAX CUT DUE! -- PRESIDENT OUTLINES PLANS TO CONGRESS:
In his State of the Union message to Congress, President Kennedy calls for an eleven million dollar tax cut for individual taxpayers. He wants individual tax rates cut from the present 20% to 91% to a range of 14% to 65%. He says the recession is behind us. Warns to be cautious about the rift between Red China and the Soviet Union.

NUCLEAR POWER - TWO NEW SUBS LAUNCHED:
Added might for Uncle Sam's deterrent power as two more nuclear-powered submarines join the fleet. The "John Adams" is launched at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, while the "Nathan Hale” goes into the water at Groton, Connecticut. The new subs will fire the advanced A-Three Polaris missile.

NEW BLIZZARDS HIT CONTINENT:
All of Britain and the Continent is suffering fresh blizzards after being in the grip of a paralyzing winter for the past four weeks. In the Netherlands, the canals are frozen, closing important arteries. In Britain the livestock must be hand fed in the fields and in Belgium ships are frozen at their piers.

POPE PROCLAIMS NEW SAINT:
The Roman Catholic Church proclaims a new Saint in ceremonies led by Pope John XXIII. He is Vincent Pallotti, a 19th Century priest who founded an order responsible for saving thousands of Jews during World War Two.

DEMOCRATIC RALLY ERASES DEFICIT:
The Democrats get out of debt as they celebrate President Kennedy's second year in office. A $100 admission charge wipes out the party's $800,000 deficit.

KHRUSHCHEV AT BERLIN WALL:
Chairman Khrushchev, at the Berlin Wall, says it protects the East Germans against imperialists who have designs on East Germany. Unquote.

NORGE SKI CLUB MEET:
While the thermometer flirts with zero hardy snowbirds take part in the Norge Ski Club ski-jump at Fox River Grove, Illinois. When all of the frostbites are counted
Gene Kotlarek is on top with 206 feet.

General Douglas MacArthur brings peace between two warring amateur athletic bodies and they're back running at a Los Angeles meet. 'The women's 60-yard dash, the pole vault and the mile run are the outstanding events…

ECONOMIC FREEZE: COLD WAVE BRINGS HUGE CITRUS LOSS:
The cold wave sweeping the nation has put, the squeeze on the California citrus crop to the tune of Twenty One Million! That's the loss to fruit frozen on the trees. 145,000 tons!

In Europe, there are more than 50 people dead in the worst winter they have suffered in a decade. Rivers and canals are frozen over, putting food and fuel in short supply.

FASHION PARADE:
From Florence to Rome, Italian designers are unveiling the creations which they hope will keep them in the forefront of
the Fashion Parade. Luciani takes his inspiration from Sagittarius and creates some "heavenly-sent” styles for spring and summer.

YESTERDAY’S BIG STORY:
A story of high drama gripped the world's attention in 1937… It was the story of the U.S. Gunboat "PANAY". As was to happen four years later at Pearl Harbor, a quiet Sunday afternoon erupted into an inferno of bombs and fire as Japanese planes attack the U.S. ship carrying American refugees from war-ravaged Nanking. Clearly labeled with American flags, the "PANAY" was dive-bombed and machine-gunned and two men were killed and a dozen wounded. The Japanese government apologized, but why it happened is a question unanswered to this day.

INSIDE CUBA: THE LAND THAT REFUGEES FLEE:
As Cuba enters the fifth year of Fidel Castro's rule, that island nation is a land of uncertainty and quiet desperation. These pictures of life in Cuba were made by an American cameraman on assignment from UNIVERSAL Newsreel and show only what authorities wanted to show. However, they do reflect the military flavor of day-to-day life and there’s not much to show that Communism has bred prosperity for the masses in Cuba. Then the freighter "Shirley Lykes" drops another shipment of supplies - ransom for Castro’s war prisoners -- before picking up 1,170 refugees who will find a haven in the United States. They are mostly relatives of the war prisoners, who sacrificed all their possessions to Castro in order to leave their homeland.

WEATHER AROUND THE WORLD:
As the United States suffers its fifth freeze of the winter, the thermometer flirts with zero as far south as Alabama…

In Europe there are five-foot drifts south of Florence, Italy. Suffering is widespread throughout the Continent.

In Japan the weather agency records 10 to 12 feet of snow in some sections – the heaviest snow fall in its 77-year history.

COMMON MARKET: FRANCE VETOES BRITAIN'S ENTRY:
The meeting of the Common Market Commission in Brussels is a wake for Britain's hopes of joining the nations of the Continent in a unified economic front. Five of the member nations welcomed British participation, but DeGaulle (aiming at French domination) kept Britain out.

GALES LASH NORTHERN CALIFORNIA:
The record-breaking drought here is broken with a bang as gale-force winds whip a downpour over the area. Thirteen people are injured as the longest dry spell in 64 years comes to an end.

THE GREEKS HAVE A WORD FOR IT - "love"!
The King and Queen of Denmark are welcomed to Greece by that country's King and Queen as they arrive with Princess Anne-Marie who has become engaged to the Greek Crown Prince, Constantine.

SPORTS

"OZO" WINS PRIX D'AMERIQUE:
Europe's richest trotting race goes to "OZO", a 5-year-old French mare who is a champ in every-rippling
muscle. She's challenged at the finish by "Oscar RL", but she goes on to win a chance to compete in New York next April.

RALLY BATTLES SNOW STORMS:
Snow adds to the hazards of the Monte Carlo Rally, often termed world's toughest road race. It's over icy roads down to the warm coast where switchbacks call for skillful driving. This year's victors are a team from Sweden.

MACMILLAN IN ITALY FOR ECONOMIC TALKS:
A grim Prime Minister MacMillan meets with Italian Premier Fanfani after France's rejection of Britain’s entry, into the Common Market. He receives assurances from Fanfani before an audience with Pope John XXIII who has also expressed concern about European unity.

JAPAN CONTINUES TO DIG OUT:
Fresh storms have compounded the misery in Japan as 12,000 troops pitch in to try to dig the country out from under 12 foot walls of snow.

INDIA CELEBRATES "REPUBLIC DAY":
What is usually a joyous occasion - India's "Independence Day" - takes on a somber air in the face of threats from Red China.

AIR DISASTER IN TURKEY:
One hundred people are dead in Ankara as two planes collide and plunge into the heart of the City.

MILLROSE GAMES MOUNT SURPRISES:
From an upset victory in the 60-yard dash to a new record in the broad jump there’s a hearty menu served up to fans at the Millrose Games. Three Russians compete and they all come through at the expense of American entrants…
