NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1966 (UE66001)

New York Transit Strike.
6000 subway cars is a late idle, 230 miles of track lead nowhere. A strike of transportation Union workers almost brings New York City to a stop as they walk out over a new contract with the transit authorities.

Not a subway car or a bus rolls as some New Yorkers get to work the best they can -- -- only an estimated 25% showed up on the first working day. The strike is a monumental headache to New York's mayor, John Lindsay, who assumed office in the midst of the strike. Monumental traffic jams and heavy pedestrian traffic is a hallmark of a subway strike in New York -- the city could only begin to roll again to the click of subway wheels.

Sports. Bowl games.
LSU In Cotton Bowl upset.
Arkansas comes into the Cotton Bowl game with a winning streak of 22 games and are heavy favorites to take the measure of Louisiana State. They go home after a skinning in the hands of the Tigers, who upset them-----14 to 7.

Rose Bowl is another upset.
Michigan State was undefeated during the season and two touchdown favorites to take the measure of UCLA. Well, you know the story when you have old man upset playing a drawback for the opposition. UCLA pools in the biggest upset in rows, a bold history as they down Michigan State -- -- -- 14 to 12

Transit Strike Costly.
When to translate the wheels grind to a stop in New York City it's world - wide news. Mayor John Lindsay sets an example for most New Yorkers when he leaves reporters dropping behind as he walks from his midtown hotel to City Hall. Not in decades has the Brooklyn bridge across Easter ever been so crowded with pedestrians. Along with other river crossings it is jammed with workers from Brooklyn and Queens trudging to their jobs. Motor traffic, never a bargain in New York, is increase manyfold, but the paralyzing jams that were feared never materialized. Commuters from the suburbs were able to reach the city by train and then hoof it to their office. The most miserable day of them all came when it rained from dawn to dusk. But the people took this, too, in their stride. With all the odds against them New Yorkers were winning out!

Sports -- Football.
Green Bay New Pro Champs.
Before a chilled and wet crowd of 50,000 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the Packers take on the Cleveland Browns, for the National League championship. It's a seesaw game in the first half, but then Green Bay turns on the heat -- -- --(everyone can use it) and hold the Browns scoreless as they score themselves to win out, 23 to 12.

Peace Mission to World Capitals.
With bombing raids suspended since Christmas Eve, President Johnson's mighty peace offensive goes into high gear in capitals all over the world. Top diplomats from Washington, led by such notables as U.S. Ambassador to the UN Arthur Goldberg, Averill Harriman and G. Williams, are shown on both sides of the Iron and Bamboo curtains, explaining America's stand in the war with North Vietnam. A graphic round up of international history into making -- -- --

Sports.
Pennel Stars In Track Meet.
John Pennel, unattached, stars at Examiner International Meet Opening West Coast track and field Season in the San Francisco Cow Palace. Pennel set a new of American indoor pole vault mark with a leap of 16 feet, 7 1/2". He failed, however, to set a new world mark at 16'9.

Palmer Takes Los Angeles Open.
Arnold Palmer wins $70,000. Los Angeles opened by three strokes, despite a final round of 73. Sensation approach, and putt on final green saves the day he do for Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Pro Paul Harney ties for second place with a final-round of 67.

State Of The Union.
Reporting to Congress in his "State of the Union" message, President Johnson calls for a record budget of $112.8 billion as he predicts another peak year for the gross national product. He promises to wage the war in Vietnam to victory while at the same time pushing forward his "Great Society" program at home -- -- --

Gotham Rides Again.
In the early morning hours of the 13th day of the long, long walk has ended. New York's wheels are turning once again as Mayor John Lindsay announces the agreement to end the transit strike. 6000 buses are back on the streets and more than 270 miles of subway rails are ringing once more. President Johnson, in a surprise press conference, announced the settlement off from $50-$70 as "against the national interest". He thought the race too great. It. But, for the moment, New Yorkers don't tote up the cost. They are too happy to be back strap hanging.

Sports -- -- -- Season's First Ski Jump.
The first major ski jump of the season gets off to a slippery start at Oberstdorf in the German -- Austrian meet. There are jumpers from five countries after this title, but they all have had hard going as the course is rough and sloppy from rain and snow. However, they give their best -- and best of all is Veikko Kankkonen of Finland, noted Olympic gold-medal winner.

World in tribute to Shastri.
A million people lined the streets of New Delhi to pay last tributes to Lal Bahadur Shastri, Prime Minister of India. Mr.Shastri died in Tashkent, Soviet Central Asia, just hours after signing an agreement with Pakistan to withdraw troops from disputed Kashmir. In keeping with Hindu custom, the prime minister's body is cremated on the banks of the river Jumna.

Shastri's death thrust a new figure on the world scene. Madame Indira Gandhi is the almost unanimous choice to succeed Mr.Shastri of India's many factions.

Nigeria in Turmoil.
Life appears to gold calmly in Nigeria's streets despite an attempted coup by dissident junior officers. Only days after he presides at a Commonwealth Ministers Conference, Nigerian Prime Minister Balewa was kidnapped by the rebels. The uprising came as a shock to Commonwealth nations.

A Big, Big, Blessed Event.
The proudest and biggest set of parents in the state of Texas are Jimmy and Jimmie. They are the parents of Victoria -- Vicky to her friends -- the ninth gorilla to be born in captivity. Baby is doing fine, and soon will be receiving visitors.

Sports -- -- -- Football. Eastern Pros Upset West.
The Western pro stars are plagued with Miss Q. this as the morale is East team takes advantage and runs up a 36 to seven victory. The West has eight passes intercepted -- that give you an idea how it went.

All at Sea!
It seems that there is hardly a land lumber left in New York as Gothamites flocked to the annual boat show. There's something for everyone -- -- -- a boat for $100, or a yacht for $100,000. There's only one drawback about the boat show -- it does make spring seem so away -- -- --

Weaver Sworn In.
A distinguished audience sees Robert C. Weaver sworn in as the new secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Mr. Weaver is the first Black to obtain cabinet rank, and his installations marks a new milestone for Blacks.

A New Queen.
A proud old name returned to seas. The German liner Europa sails into New York Harbor for her maiden voyage under a new flag. She's the former Kungsholm and, thoroughly refurbished, will add new luxury to the trans-Atlantic run.

Shades of Moby Dick.
Sightseers go we'll hunt off the Pacific Coast -- but the most dangerous weapon is a camera. The Grey whale is making its annual migration from the Bering Sea to breeding grounds off lower California. Observation posts give a close-up view of the event -- -- -- huge schools of the 30 -ton monsters playing their way south.

Of Snow She Sings.
Europe's bitter winter has this lighter moments. Our Paris correspondents illustrates a song that's on the French hit parade -- -- -- a ballard about the falling snow.

Medicare Cards Prepared.
President Johnson presents former President Harry S. Truman, with his Medicare credentials -- honoring the man who fought for such coverage 20 years ago. Meanwhile, in Baltimore, the mailings begans for the millions who will be covered by the new law, beginning in July.

Sports.
TV Stars Parade at "500":
The Riverside, California 500 has added starters in TV stars who parade before the race. Almost every once here -- -- -- Joe Flynn from McHale's Navy, Denver Pile of Tammy,Edy Williams, who's in The Pad. Also,Vickie Fee, Robert Pine, and Caren Jensen from Out Off-Site. And let's not forget Al Lewis,of the Munsters. As for the race -- -- Dan Gurney becomes the first man ever to win a 500 mile race four times in a row as he sets a new speed record to win by more than a minute.

Kenyan Stars in Track Meet:
Kipchoge Keino from Kenya puts on an iron- Man exhibition at the Los Angeles invitational meet as he runs in both the mile and two mile with only 90 minutes rest. He runs second in the mile is Jim Grelle arrives him down --in the last lap.In the two mile, Keino paces himself better, and takes command at the end to win going away. Meanwhile, John Pennel Sets a new mark in the Pole Vault -- 16 Feet 9 1/2".

Defense Complex:
Shielded beneath Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado is a mighty bastion that protects millions of free men. The North American Air Defense Command (NORD) has moved into their new complex that Is in touch with all parts of the globe through 16 million miles of communication Lines. 10,000 telephone and teletypes circuit feed information to the center and within seconds after an enemy attack they would have defensive moves underway -- --

Keep Calm Men:
Should mean really keep, or hit for the hills? Paris designer Jacques Esterel unveils his fashions for next summer, and he's way out there. He's a great believer in pop art, pop, and he says he has designed these close with an eye on the year 2000. Ah, well, summer madness is upon us in the dead of winter.

Sports:
A Taste of Whizz-Ski:
Top skiers from all of Europe and the United States drawer crowd of thousands to Kitzbuhel, Austria. For the famed Hahnenkamm men's ski event. Billy Kidd of the United States does fine until he springs an ankle -- -- an injury that will sideline him for the rest of the season. After a series of spectacular spills, karl Schranz of Austria takes over and winced at 21 1/2 mile down the field test. In less than 2: 17 minutes -- -- a speed of well over 60 miles an hour.

Resume Vietnam Bombings:
For the first time in 37 days, United States planes carry out airstrikes against North Vietnam. President Johnson, in an address to the nation, says that continued efforts to bring Hanoi to the peace table were fruitless and blames their aggressive acts for the decision to resume air raids on supply depots and rail lines.

Fatal Boston Hotel Fire:
Authorities have not yet pinpoint the cause of an early evening blast that ripped through to Boston hotels, killing 10 people in injuring at least 60 others. Gas fumes in the basement exploded through the floor of a ground-level restaurant and diners were dropped into the cellar.

B--R--R--R!
Wind, snow and icy cold was the weather story through most of the nation as the Atlantic Coast experiences a true blizzard. From Florida to Maine there are record low temperatures is the storm dumps as much as 20 inches on some Southern states. Washington, D. C., is without train service for 11 hours and federal employees are told to stay home. On the surface, however, the snow makes a pretty picture.

United States Peace Efforts:
The United Nations Security Council meets at the behest of the United States and hears Ambassador Arthur Goldberg's request that the International body debate a U.S. resolution on Vietnam. This is the latest move in Washington's search for peace, and over the opposition of Russia and France, the Vietnam debate is put on the agenda.

Golden Globes:
The whole town turns out for the Golden Globes -- Movie Awards from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Mohan is Claudia Cardinale who is starred in Universal's Blindfold, Paul Newman, who is in Alfred Hitchcock's latest Torn Curtain, and Julie Andrews, who is to star with Carol Channing in Ross Hunter's Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Moment to Moment:
Florida's biggest motion picture premiere in the state's history honors the producer and stars is Moment to Moment as it opens at five theaters simultaneously. Producer Melvin LeRoy escorts Honor Blackman -- the Goldfinger girl to the premiere. Also present is Sean Garrison who makes his debut in the movie. However, star Gene Seberg was ill and Paris and could not attend.

Sports:
New York's festival off fisticuffs, the annual Golden gloves, hit a rapidfire tempo right from the start as the sub-novices makes it up in the three round bouts. The New York Daily News Welfare Association sponsors the bouts for charity, and as usual, the Golden gloves proved to be a solid twenty-two carat.
