NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1966 (UE66011)

Vietnam's Future:
A three-day summit meeting between the United States and South Vietnam leaders was aimed at bringing a new social and economic perspective to the war in Vietnam.

President Johnson flew to Hawaii for the meeting with the leaders from Saigon, and its conclusion came the decoration of Honolulu -- -- An Outline of Both War and Peace Aims in Southeast Asia. Later, the president returned to Los Angeles to confer with Vice President Humphrey before the V-P leaves for Saigon to implement the conclusions reached at the confereence.

Final Curtain:
She will be remembered, with affection, as the "Last Of The Red Hot Mamas". With a voice that was big, brassy and flamboyant, Sophie Tucker occupied a particular niche in the hearts of other show people. Her career covered 60 years, and at her golden anniversary, all of her contemporaries turned out to pay tribute.

Every year, the Golden gloves amateur bouts are a slam -- bang affair and this year's 147- pound class sees knockout after knockout as the youngsters hoped to fight their way to the future fame and glory.

Humphrey Mission:
Vice President Hubert Humphrey begins a tour of South East Asia to implement the Declarations of Honolulu -- -- that meeting between United States and South Vietnamese leaders that foresee a new military and economic facet in Asia's future. The vice president's job will be to encourage self-help among Southeast Asian Nations to bring faster and more fruitful economic conditions for all.

Royal Tour:
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip began a tour of the West in decent with a visit to British Guiana - due to become independent next May. There is tension to Honda cheering reception -- for the country has been the scene of race riots between East Indians and Blacks. However, nothing mars the start of the Queens five-week tour.

Slides Demolish Homes:
Loosened by heavy rains, a landslide in the exclusive Bel Air section of Los Angeles sends three homes tumbling into the street below. 11 other houses are sealed off when the access road was blocked and a half dozen others are threatened by new slides. The homes are only hillside that was the scene of a 1959 avalanche -- -- the terrain was rebuilt only to have the same thing happen again.

Sports:
Pennell Sets Other Record:
The world's premier pole-vaulter, John Pennell, breaks the record he set just two weeks go as he soars 16 feet, 10 inches. In the two-mile race it is a battle between two friends, Bill Baillie of New Zealand and Don Clark of Australia. Both the down under boys out race the field, with Baillie beating Clark by 10 yards.

Vietnam Report:
Operation "White Wing" enters its fourth week of a search and destroy mission 300 miles northeast of Saigon, near Boengson. Men of the First Calvary Airmobile clean out a village of the Vietcong preparatory to rehabilitating it under the new economic program and returning its inhabitants to new and more prosperous surroundings.

Gala Premiere from Madame X.
The Directors Guild Theater is the scene of one of the plushiest of Hollywood openings -- -- The Ross Hunter production, Madame X.. The new movie stars Alanna Turner and costars Ricardo Montalban, both of whom are here at the head of a long list of luminaries.

Canine Classic:
At New York's Madison Square Garden 2557 dog put their best paw forward as they vie for best in the show at the Westminster Kennel Club fixture. When it's all over the choice is a wire haired fox tear your, champion zeloy Moormaid Magic -- Biddy to her friends. She outpointed a fine field and was immediately retired, quitting while she's still own top.

"Say Hey" -- That's a Homer!
One of the most fabulous baseball players of all time becomes the highest-paid player in history.Willie Mays signs a two year contract at a reported $130,000 a year. Scenes of some of his outstanding plays on the field and at bat confirmed the fact that he's worth every penny.

Water From Hudson:
The Hudson River may be ice-choked at the moment, but New York City is already looking forward to next summer. A new pumping station is nearing completion 60 miles north of the city,and for the first time, River water will be rushing through the aqueducts to New York. 100,000,000 gallons will become daily -- 1/10 of the needs -- to supplement the supply from the Delaware and other sources.

U.N. Studio Tour:
Jules Stein, board chairman of M C A, plays host to 37 United Nations delegates, as they tour Universal City. Most say it is the highlights of their swaying around the United States. As they see how movies are made in visit that many permanent cities and towns a lot.

Sports:
They Do It for Kicks:
It all started on the playing fields of Rugby in 1823, and the ball hasn't stopped bouncing since. This is the France-Ireland meeting in the five-nation league and in a rough and tumble game, France outpoints Ireland 11 to 6.

Jumping to Glory:
The Grand Prix of Germany is one of Europe's top jumping events, drawing the continent's best -- -- 15 horses and riders compete a sheer, and it's flawless example of horsemanship -- nary a spill.

Moon comes Nearer:
The United States successfully completes a first step on the way to the moon as the giant Saturn hurls an Apollo moonship 5,500 miles downrange. The shoot almost failed as the automatic systems cut off three seconds before ignition. However, technicians backed up the count down and tried again. The gamble paid off handsomely.

Ghana Revolt:
Prime Minister Nkrumah is overthrown in a military coup after he leaves Ghana for a visit to Peking to achieve peace in Vietnam. Nkrumah took over in a one man rule after Ghana won its independence, jailed his foes and began a despotic rule. Now, however, he's just another unemployed exile.

A Winter's Tale:
Once again the Eastern Seaboard is reminded that winter is never over until Jack Frost gets a hot foot that send him scurrying on his way. Five to fourteen inches of snow blanket the East -- -- and the only optimistic note is: maybe it will ease next summer's water shortage.

Sports:
Here's Mud in Your Eye:
How the Spanish do carry-on when they stage a bike race. In this log and peddle epic, the 40 contestants make their way over muddy hill and muddy dale, walking mostly -- and peddling when they can. At least the winner cleans up -- -- prize money.

Clarke Adds Other Record:
Don Clarke, the greatest distance runner all time, sets a new indoor mark in to my old indoor meet at San Francisco, clipping two seconds from the three-year-old record. The fleet footed Australian leads all the way as he winds up his season in a blistering blaze of glory.

High Flying Camera:
An epilogue to the saga of the Apollo test are remarkable pictures made from the Saturn rocket as it pushed the capsule into space. A camera that was later parachuted into the sea recorded the shut down on the first stage and the firing of the second as the test flight went like clockwork to pave the way to the moon.

Love Thaws Cold War:
Chi-Chi is a gal who is stepping out in the world -- she's engaged. One of the two giant pandas outside of red China, Chi-Chi is leaving Britain for Moscow to meet An-An there. Both British and Soviet Zoologist Hope That a Blessed Event Will Come about.

A Word to the Ladies:
Skirts are on a rising market in Paris fashion marts for spring and summer -- and the severe, straight lines have a deceptive softness.Nina Ricei and Gerard Pippart have made news by not offering anything too radical.

U.S. Doll Captures Skating Crown:
There Is a new shooting star, on the International skating scene. A17 year old Miss from Colorado Springs -- --Peggy Gale Fleming. She walks away with the women's world figure skating championship, turning in a perfect score in the free skating competition.

Is This a Straight Steer?
The Bulls of the Bronx invade Houston's Astrodome to take on the Cowboys, and as usual, the animals have the better time of it. At that, you rarely see errorless baseball here, either.

Air Tragedies In Japan:
A Canadian jet, groping for a landing at fogbound Tokyo airport, crashes and burns, killing sixty-four of the seventy-two persons aboard. This crash followed by a month another Tokyo air disaster in which 133 were killed,and in turn, was followed 24 hours later by the crash of a British jet at Mt. Fuji with a toll of 124.

Madame X. Premier:
Lana Turner brings a bit of Hollywood glamour to Florida as she arrives in Miami for the multi-theater world premiere of Ross Hunter's production of Madame X., her new starring role. John Forsythe, who is among the distinguished co-stars, is also on hand for the opening.

Cross Country Fashions:
Starting in New York, our fashion models tour Washington, the Grand Canyon and Universal City, California to demonstrate how the new synthetics can take the travail out of travel. Easy to maintain dresses, suits and slacks are just the thing for this jet age.

A-h-h----Spring!
It is a simple matter to speed spring on its way in New York. All you need is a ticket to the flower show, and on opening day, 60,000 people had just that idea. A million blooms make you forget the ill tempered winds of winter.

Prince Begins Tour:
As Queen Elizabeth returns to England after a tour the Caribbean, Prince Philip begins a tour of the United States on behalf of the International Variety Clubs. His first stop is in Miami, where he visits the variety Children's Hospital were the young patients think that the is the Prince, all right.

Here's Where the Money Goes!
Just as you always suspected -- -- they have money to burn in Washington. There's more money than ever in circulation and it is wearing out faster. $250 million worth a day is burned and new money printed to replace it.

Erin Go Boom:
The Irish joined the space race as some unknown Dubliners send the statue of Lord Nelson into orbit. The memorial to the British Sea hero is demolished in the middle of the night -- and the Irish mourn -- sort of.

Vietnam Hero Honored:
President Johnson presents a multiple word to visit is Martha Bagget- posthumous honor for her husband who died in an air raid over Vietnam. The president has his arms full of a Bagget daughter and seems to enjoy it.

Dutch Princess Married:
Crowds cheer Princess Beatrix and her German commoner fiancé as they make their last appearance before their marriage. It is not an entirely popular match with the people, for he was once a German soldier.

Honors for Casey:
Casey Stengel joins other immortals and baseball's Hall of Fame as a reward for his fantastic 55 year career as a player, coach and manager. He has quite a record -- -- as he says: "you could look it up".

Beatrix Weds:
It was the rocky road to romance for Princess Beatrix, but the great day finally arrives as she is wed to Claus Von Amsberg, a German, commoner, who now becomes a Dutch prince. The pair are wed in a civil ceremony before religious rights at West Church. Smoke bombs and boos mar the ceremony as many in the crowd protest the groom's nationality. However, once again, love conquers all.

Philip The Astronaut:
Speaking of royalty, a visiting amateur pilot is welcome to the manned spacecraft Center in Houston. Prince Philip, on a tour the United States on behalf of the Variety Clubs, tries his at piloting aGemini capsule in a simulated rendezvous with an Agena rocket. He does all right too. Maybe, if he is ever out of a job he could join the astronaut's team.

Longden Retires:
While still the royalty gambit -- -- a king of the turf retires. Jockey Johnny Longden goes out in a blaze of glory as he rides his last mount at California's Santa Anita. He comes from behind on George r he oyal to win to San Juan Capistrano handicap and make his mout the last of 6,032 winners he has ridden in his 40 year career. Johnny is not leaving the track -- he will turn his fine hand to training horses.

Drama into Space:
The most dramatic space probe in history, is the flight of the Gemini 8. Under command pilot Neil Armstrong, the first civilian astronaut, the Gemini has David Scott aboard for a planned spacewalk of more than two hours.

First on the agenda is a rendezvous with Agena rocket launched a 101 minutes before the Gemini is airborne. After that, the spacewalk, three other meetings with the Agena and a three day orbiting voyage.

All goes well at first. Both launches are beautiful and the rendezvous takes place as scheduled on the fourth orbit.

Then trouble less than an hour later. The Agena started gyrating wildly and the Gemini has to pull away. With this maneuvering, fuel is exhausted, and it is ordered back to earth and lands in an emergency area south of Japan -- right on the button.

The voyage of the Gemini is a tribute to two brave man cash -- men who are casting our future beyond the bounds of infinity.
