NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1966 (UE66021)

Rendezvous with Tomorrow:
The most dramatic adventure in space history ends southeast of Okinawa as astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott bring their Gemini 8 capsule down safely. There were three bad hours after their near disaster 185 miles above the earth. Motion pictures made from the capsule show the sighting and link up with the Agena rocket, the movies showing dramatically how space travel will be accomplished in the future.

And then the violet gyrations of Agena and Gemini as the number 8 thruster on Gemini short circuits and the astronauts wrestle their capsule back under control.

A happy ending to what might have been a disaster.

Sports -- -- -- Basketball.
Hoop Upset:
The crowd at College Park, Maryland sees a David come out of the West to slay an Eastern Goliath. Texas Western wins the national collegiate basketball championship by downing the highly favored Kentucky team 72 to 65.

Nobody paid much attention to Texas Western when they entered the tournament, but there was tumult and shouting with the team won the first major sports title Texas Western has ever won.

Historic Meeting:
A day of historic import is written on the church calendar at Vatican City. Dr. Arthur Michael Ramsey, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Pope Paul VI confer in the Sistine Chapel on steps that might be taken to bring Roman Catholics and Anglicans closer together. The schism that separated Catholics and English churchmen occurred in the 16th century and never since have the two churches been so close in EcuemenIcal recognition of each other.

Opera's New Home:
New York's Metropolitan Opera has something to sing about -- a spanking new home at Lincoln Center, the city's new cultural hub. For 83 years that there has been housed in a massif in the Tory instructor for the sound of -- a forbidding pile that has echoed to the world's greatest voices. Now, just as singers have become streamlined, so has the Opera house, now ready to carry on a great old tradition in new surroundings.

Ain't Love Grand?
Not since Romeo and Juliet has there been such a love story -- -- -- crowds greet Chi Chi who arrives in Moscow to meet An-An, a Russian man-about-town and her groom. The only two pandas outside of red China, Chi Chi and An An will make Zoologist happy if they become proud parents.

Sports:
Hull Makes New Hockey Records:
Bobby Hull, Chicago Blackhawks ace, keeps adding to his season scoring record as he puts his 53rd score on ice in a game against the Detroit red wing. Not since 1945 has the players scored more than 50 goals -- and Bobby is out for still more.

Curtain Raiser for Indianapolis:
The nation's top drivers compete in the Phoenix 150 mile race, a warmup for the Indianapolis 500 classic.Jim Mcelreath gets home first with an average of close to 99 miles an hour. He will be one of the stars in Indianapolis when that race is sent to theaters over closed-circuit television.

Front Line Action:
A dramatic description from the scene of a recent U.S.Marines search and clear mission by Marine Lt. Dick Nicklin. Under murderous Viet Cong fire the young Marine never pauses as he describes the action of flushing a Viet Cong regiment from its jungle caves and fastnesses. Truly heroic.

Mrs. Gandhi Visits LBJ:
With a flashback to her lonely isolation in high office in India, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is shown being received in Washington by President Johnson. A red carpet state visit that brings out the pomp and circumstance of the nation's capital.

Jet River Boats:
Leaving their base in a mare Island, California, some of the Navy's new jet propelled river boats put on a show for the newsreel cameras. At their public debut before the beginning and intensive four-week training before going into service along the Mekong River against the Vietcong, trim craft with great speed in shallow draft and amazing fire power.

Fashion in Color:
Creation and fabrics with design inspired by the wildflowers Provence to add a note of the French countryside to milady's wardrobe.Gowns for every occasion that almost gives the illusion of perfume as the flowers glow on their beautiful backgrounds.

Mrs. Gandhi Hailed:
Mrs. Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India, on a whirlwind visit to New York, tours the city's expanding Lincoln Center a development to house the performing arts. She also sees a children's art exhibit and inspects her country's outlet for handicraft objects.

British Elections:
The British elections return the Labor Party to power in London -- Prime Minister and Ms. Wilson continue as residents at number 10 Downing St.

Scooter Riding Nuns:
A Granite City, Illinois, the sisters of St. Elizabeth's Hospital use scooters to make their nursing rounds. The innovation was made necessary by the growing lengths of the corridors in the expanding institution.

Sports:
Dodgers sign Drysdale and Koufax:
The end of the duel pitchers holdout sees Koufax and Drysdale at Los Angeles, California, signing up for record sums for moundsmen.

The Grand National:
What could be the last grand national steeplechase to be held at Aintree, England, is won by the 50-1 long shot, with jockey Tim Norman driving. The famous course is being negotiated for by a building syndicate that wants to cut it up into lots for a housing development.

Vietcong Blast Billet:
The second major terrorist attack on an American installation in Saigon in four months takes six lives and injures 60. A shocking revelation of how, at will, the Vietcong terrorist can penetrate the seat of government of Vietnam. Also, the anti-premier Ky and U.S. demonstrations that have made it necessary to keep Americans off Saigon streets.

Mrs. LBJ at Fiesta:
Recovered from a bout with the flu, Mrs. Johnson is started all-day tour from the White House by her husband. The first lady is out to learn more about the vast Lone Star reaches and she made her start at a light fiesta and San Antonio -- -- -- turning on a new system of illumination to light the river that runs through the city.

New Offbeat Boat:
It's called the new moon and it's the pride and consternation of the Norfolk Yacht Harbor off California's Oakland Estuary. Concocted by sculptor David Brooks, it's an arc of many splendored stained-glass windows with more facets than a diamond. How it would fare in a gale is anybody's guess, but it's kooky and wonderful.

Motorcycle Wizards:
Royal artillery motorcyclist in a thrilling preview of a trick riding show they are preparing for the entertainment of England's speed and stunt enthusiast.

The Florida Derby:
Williamston Kid, 90 to 1, is placed first in rich Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. Actual winner, Abe's Hope, is disqualified for bumping and places fourth. A thrilling prelude to the forthcoming Kentucky Derby and other Triple Crown races.

Tornadoes Killed 10:
The path of the devastating series of twisters that swept Florida from Tampa to Cape Kennedy-a dramatic picturization of millions of dollars of property damage amid which 10 died and hundreds were injured.

Religious Harmony:
Fordham University in New York celebrating its 125th anniversary. A convocation of scholars and theologians of many faiths during which Protestants, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish theologians are awarded honorary degrees.

The Big Top:
The Big Top in the Big Town fine New Yorkers as unsophisticated as rural citizens before the wonders of the circus. There is the big parade you through this city streets and in the opening performance that proves the great show is bigger and more spine tingling that ever.

Sports:
Pint Size Mayhem:
The Naval Academy's annual festival of fisticuffs. In 1966 brigade of boxing champions(pint -- size) compete in prime condition for pugilistic honors -- a series of boxing matches with a lot more laughs and action than in those recent heavyweight bouts.

New 490-Seat Jets:
The largest jetliner in the history of commercial aviation will be in the air sometime in 1969. It will accommodate 490 passengers, over twice is many as of now carried by any commercial craft. The ship is a jetliner 747, and an order for 25 at a cost of 525 million has been placed with Boeing by Pan Am (Pan American).

Prince Hiro Goes to School:
The entering of six-year-old Prince Hiro in primary school is made an occasion for a film record in Tokyo. The child is the grandson of Emperor Hirohito and second in line for the Japanese throne.

Esplanade To Beautify Los Angeles:
As a contribution Mrs. Lyndon Johnson's beautification campaign, Jules Stein, M. C. A. Board Chairman, improves a Los Angeles thoroughfare and formally presents It to the city's Mayor, Sam Yorty.

Fashion Parade:
From Budapest, Hungary, a surprising fashion show. It reveals that communist women are becoming style conscious and are actually doing something about it. Competition for Paris, New York, and Hollywood.

Sports:
Braves Hailed in Atlanta:
Atlanta, with a big, new circular stadium to house them, hails the arrival of the Braves with a gigantic parade. The city's attainment to big-league status sets off a delirium of enthusiasm. The fact that a Wisconsin judge ruled the Braves belong in Milwaukee fails to dampen southern spirits. They look to a loophole in the ruling to save the day.

Nicklaus -- -- King of Golf:
The dramatic highlights of the 1966 Masters golf tournament over the national golf course at Augustine Georgia. The excitement of the three-way tie that marked the final round and the deciding plays of the playoff in which Jack Nicklaus emerged The Winner to Become the First Man in the 32 Years of Master Play to Win the Coveted Title in Successive Years.

Mexico Hails LBJ:
Record crowds hailed President Johnson and his family on his arrival at Mexico City airport and wildly cheer the motorcade on its 9-mile ride to the Presidential Palace. The following day, a statue of Abraham Lincoln is unveiled and President Johnson promises ever effort to promote social equality in the hemisphere.

Sea Kills Three:
The superliner Michaelangelo, in New York for extensive repair, shows the terrible damage done by a monstrous wave during an Atlantic storm. Water poured down the companion ways, crushing steel walls like so much paper. Three persons were killed and several injured.

Opera Era Ends:
The Metropolitan Opera House rings down the final curtain call with a gala show. A glittering audience hears 57 opera stars sing their favorite aris. An office building will replace the 82 year-old landmark -- -- and the Metropolitan Opera Company and stars will move to a fabulous new home in Lincoln Center.

Korean Build-Up.Westmoreland Greets Regiment on Arrival:
Some 3000 ROK troops disembark from landing craft in his Vietnam to reinforce Korean soldiers already active in the war. The Korean fighters are welcomed by U.S. General Westmoreland.

Hollywood's Night -- Golden Oscars Given to All Winters:
The big Hollywood show of the year. The Annual Award of Golden Oscars by the Motion Picture Academy was attended by screen notables. The words were made to actor Lee Marvin, English actress Julie Christie. A special gold-medal award went to Bob Hope.

Accurate Prophet --Jule Verne Foresaw 20th Century Advance:
In Paris and exhibition of the ideas of the father of science fiction writers, Jules Verne, is a big hit. A remarkable display of drawings show Verne as the greatest of 19th-century visionaries, anticipating the inventions of the 20th century from the atomic bomb to television.

Sports -- Oregon
Shooting the Rapids:
On crafts ranging from inner tubes and rubber rafts to orthodox rowboats some 500 courageous college lads and teenagers brave boiling white rapids of the Mckenzie River in Oregon's Whitewater parade.
