NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1966 (UE66031)

Medal of Honor To Vietnam Hero:
Our nation's highest award for heroism is awarded, posthumously, to Pfc. Milton Lee Olive of Chicago, in ceremonies in the Rose Garden at the White House. In attendance are President Johnson, the dead soldier's parents, members of his family, and the four soldiers whose lives he saved when he flung himself on a Viet cong grenade.

Queen Opens Parliament:
Amidst pomp and pageantry, Queen Elizabeth opens Parliament on her 40th birthday. The royal court and diplomatic corps watches as all the tradition of the 700 year-old lawmaking body is on display. In the Queen's speech, she outlines a program of strong domestic economy, increased efforts to maintain world peace, and a step up in world trade.

Jackie and Grace at Charity Fete:
Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy and the Rainiers of Monaco arrive in Seville for the famous Feria debutante ball. Some 61 debutantes from over half a dozen countries are introduced to the guest in a magnificent setting, the patio of the famous Seville Palace -- -- Pilatos House.

Sports:
Kentucky Derby Preview:
Two thrilling horse races, one in California and one in New York, set the tempo for what should be a thrilling Kentucky Derby this year. At Albany, California,Trageniew wins the $75,000 added California Derby. At New York's aqueduct track, a so-called problem colt, Amberoid, comes from the rear of the pack to sweep across the line, a two length distance wonder.

Championship Auto Racing:
The Trenton Speedway is a scene of the first tune up in the East pointing toward the famous in Annapolis 500 own Memorial Day. Only 102 miles of the scheduled 150 mile race are run after a steady drizzle develops into heavy rain any officials declare the track dangerous. Mario Andretti, after leading the entire race, has to make a pit stop and in that time loses the Lead -- -- and the checkered flag -- -- to Roger Word.

NATO Farewell:
The sweeping effects on life in France which could be caused by NATO's exit on the requested date of April 1, 1967. DeGaulle demands NATO forces and bases leave. The social and economic impact would be great. A panorama of the probable changes in the life of Frenchmen.

Happy Birthday Charlie:
A gala birthday party, his77th, for Charlie Chaplin on the London seat of a Countess from Hong Kong, which Charlie wrote, is directing, as well as doing the musical score. It stars, Sophia Loren, Tippie Hedren, any son, Sydney, are joined at the party by Mrs. Chaplin, their daughters and another Hollywood great John Houston.

The Amphitron, a weird Dutch invention, goes and mud, quicksand, water -- -- anything!U.S. Army authorities think it may replace the tank. Alabama Elections:
In an unprecedented victory, Mrs. Lurleen Wallace, wife of Governor George Wallace, wins the Alabama Democratic gubernatorial nomination by a landslide. She says if she's elected in November, she let her husband, George Wallace run the state. Thousands of Black voters cast ballots for the first time in their lives.

U Thant Confers With DeGaulle:
And a two-hour conference in Elysées Palace, UN Secretary General U Thant and President DeGaulle meet to discuss the war in Vietnam. After the conference, both men see no possibility for peace negotiations, for the moment -- --

May Day Parade in Moscow:
The traditional May Day parade in Moscow, complete with all kinds of military equipment on display, but for the first time in three years, the Russians show no new weapons. Children's folk dances follow the military display, reviewed by Communist party leaders.

U.S. Savings Bonds Rally -- -- $$$$
In Washington, the nationwide campaign to buy U S saving bonds gets rolling at a special kickoff rally. Honorary cochairman John Forsythe, movie and TV star, is one of the speakers. Vice President Humphrey accept a Minuteman flag for the White House.

Two-Man Submarine Launched:
The U. S. Navy's Latest two-man Submarine's, launched in twin launchings at New London. They're built for extensive ocean research at depths of up to 2000 feet. The Navy predicts squadrons on them in the future. Their launch by Crane, which picks them up and plops them in.

Say Hey!
Willie Mays, Giants star home run slugger, puts one out of Candlestick Park for his 512th homer, setting a new national league career homerun record. The old record of 511 along to Mel Ott. Only Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx and Babe Ruth have hit more than Willie -- -- any who knows what the future will bring?

LBJ at Princeton: President Urges Scholars Support Foreign-Policy.
At Princeton University for the dedication of the new Woodrow Wilson school of public and international affairs, President Johnson appeals to the nation's intellectuals for understanding and support of his Vietnamese policy, and makes a firm reply to critics of that policy.

Sports: Shooting the Rapids.
Contestants from six countries flocked to the wild rapids of the Ruhr River in Germany to test their paddling skills in small kayaks. They run a course of 25 polls in a steel like a slalom race with plenty of spills and thrills.

Cassius Clay:
Heavyweight champion Cassius Clay arrives in London for his late May title defense against Britisher Henry Cooper, the only professional fighter who's ever put Clay on canvas. Cooper's confident he can do it again. For a change Cassius has no comment.

Auto Crashes:
A French daredevil, Gil DeLamar, drives autos into other autos at speeds of up to 50 miles an hour; rolls them over; smashes them into burning hulks of twisted metal -- -- and comes up smiling, every time. It's a special demonstration outside Munich to show how to survive a serious accident.

California Landslide
In San Clemente, California, midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, violent earth movements has destroyed several homes while an entire street is actually sliding into the Pacific Ocean. Damage in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in the wake of what city officials called a natural phenomenon.

Art Through a Magnifying Glass:
One of the world's tiniest, and most valuable paintings, is acquired by the national Gallery in Washington, DC at a cost of $616,000. It's so small, it must be displayed in a special case and observed with a magnifying glass. St. George and the Dragon is a 15th century masterpiece which draws crowds of interested visitors.

Giant Walking Machine:
And 18 foot high giant skeleton, operated by a man, is displayed in Schenectady, N.Y. It's for use by the U. S. Army much like a giant robot, although the operator's foot and hand movements determine its course. It'll be used alright it terrain, impassable to vehicles.

Sports:
Los Angeles Relays:
At the Los Angeles Coliseum, Jim Runyan, our best miler last year at 18, sets a new U.S. record in the two-mile and become our country's best two- miler at a mere 19 years of age. He beats Jim Grelle by just 1 yard in a thrilling finish while 17,000 tracks fans go wild.

Indianapolis Time Trials:
Mario Andretti turns in the fastest time of the day, close to 166 miles an hour, and wins the coveted pole position as qualifying runs the classic Indianapolis 500 continue. Last year's champ, Jim Clark, is second-fastest, with 164 miles an hour.

Vietnam Riots:
Some 10,000 Buddhists, including monks and nuns, hold hunger strikes in Saigon. The resulting riots take on an anti-American tone, for the first time. President Ky has restored order in some sections of his nation, but Saigon continues to seeth with violence and unrest.

Taiwan Inauguration:
Some 200,000 citizens together following President Chiang Kai-shek's inauguration and the start of his fourth six-year term as head of the Republic of China. The folk dancing, fireworks, parades, and banner waving show the people's affection for Chiang who views the celebration from the presidential balcony.

British Shipping Strike:
Some 65,000 seamen go on strike for higher wages and a shorter work week, putting Britain into a state of virtual blockade. 600 ships are idle, fears closed down and picketed, even tourist ferry services are affected. A state of national emergency is proclaimed.

California Beauty New Miss U.S.A.:
Miss California, Maria Judith Remenyi, wins the title of Miss U.S.A. at the 15th annual contest in Miami Beach. She is a native of Hungary, a physics major at the University of California, and hopes to get her doctorate for research and high energy physics. She speaks four languages And Will Compete for the Miss Universe Title.

Sports: The Preakness.
Kuai King wins a Preakness. After leading almost the entire race Stupendous is caught by conduct the Derby winner kauai king at the final turn. kauai king thunders home, a two link victor over stupendous to take the second step and racing's Triple Crown, setting and you Preakness record. Next stop, the Belmont stakes.

Vietnam Unrest:
In both DaNang and Saigon some semblance of normal life returns falling almost 2 months of violence, riots, and street incidents. Tear gas was used by troops, recently, to quell the disturbances but both spots maintain their state of unrest and resentment toward ky's military government.

Cruising Family:
The globe-girdling Davenports on San Diego -- Father, Mother and 10-year-old daughter arrived in Africa on the last leg of their so far six-year world cruise. They've seen the Pacific Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Africa as -- on to the Caribbean -- -- and home. Even the family cat loves the trip -- -- and who wouldn't?

Walking Chair:
An eight-leg walking chair for the handicapped and crippled children is demonstrated in California. The vehicle, dubbed Moon Walker from the space research from which it evolved, can climbed a curbing, turn, walking sand, mud, rough fields, and up slopes, operated by the child and powered by batteries.

Moon Shot Preview:
That Kate Kennedy, a gigantic Saturn rocket is actually rolled toward its launch pad, in a successful demonstration. The 36 story tall rocket, upright on a special crawler tractor, bigger than a baseball diamond, takes all day to make the 1 miles an hour, 3 mile trip.

Fashion Parade:
Beautiful Models Display the Latest Thing in Designer Swim Caps in the Beautiful Setting of Port Antônio, Jamaica. Some of Them Are Convertibles, with a Waterproof Lining Which When Removed, Converts the Cap Into a Beach Bonnet of Straw Sun Hat.

German Singing Along:
150 American college students tour West Germany bringing their own revue, sing out 66. The show's message is one of brotherhood, freedom, and faith in a better world in the future. Chancellor Erhard requested to students to perform in West Germany.
