NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1966 (UE66052)

Airlines Strike:
The five major domestic airlines are struck by the machinists asking for wage increases tied to the cost of living. 150,000 passengers daily are affected in 231 US cities and 23 foreign countries. Secretary of labor Wirtz has stepped into negotiations.

French A-Bomb In the Pacific:
The French set off an atomic bomb, the first of a series, in the Pacific. Both America and Britain deplored the testing. Moscow had no comment. France has not signed the atomic test ban treaty. They insisted radiation would not be increased.

Soviet Music Contest:
At the Moscow Conservatory, artists from all of the world performed in what is considered the toughest music contest in the world, the Tschaikovsky competition. 24-year-old Jane Marsh, New York soprano, wins a first prize, the first American to win it top spot since Van Cliburn's triumph in 1958.

Sports: International Trot:
In a thrilling to horse duel at the finish, Canada's Armbro Flight is able to hold off a hardcharging Roquepine of France, to win the international trot by a neck. The time is only 1/5 of a second off the world record.

Nation Sizzles in Heat Wave:
The worst July heat wave in history grips the entire nation, east of the Rocky Mountains. Temperatures in the high 90s are common, and 100 is topped several times. Many deaths traced to the heat wave in both New York City and St. Louis, with no immediate end in sight.

Wingless Aircraft:
A wingless metal capsule -- -- a future space ferry -- -- get its first test flight at Edwards Air Force Base in California. It drops from beneath the wing of a bomber at 45,000 feet, maneuvers, flattens into a glide, and comes in for a perfect landing by NASA test pilot Milton Thompson.

Sports:
All-America Football:
In Atlanta Stadium, Georgia, the sixth annual coaches All-America East -- West game thrills a crowd of 38,000 fans. Randy "The Rifle" Johnson of Texas A & I throws three touchdown passes and runs a fourth over himself. The West wins 24 to 7.

All-Star Baseball:
50,000 fans sizzle in 100 degree temperatures at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis for the 37th major-league Allstar game. In the bottom of the tenth, a single by McCarver, a sacrifice bunt, And a Single by Maury Wills breaks a 1-1 tie And Wins It for the Nationals 2-1.

Miss Universe 1966:
In the 15th annual Miss Universe beauty pageant at Miami Beach, 18 year old Margaretta Arvidson of Sweden wins the title. First runner-up is Satu Charlotta Ostring, Miss Finland. The new Miss Universe is a typical blonde, blue eye Nordic beauty.

Hitchcock in East for 50th Film:
Motion picture director Alfred Hitchcock swings through both New York and Boston, promoting his 50th film, Torn Curtain, starring Julie Andrews and Paul Newman. New York's Mayor Lindsay and Massachusetts Governor Volpe both present special gifts to the famous film maker. The picture's world premiere is held at Boston.

Sports:
Bulls Owns Rampage
In the annual frenzy of the feast of San Fermin, the Bulls of Pamplona, Spain, are run through this city streets while young man run ahead of them. It's a yearly tradition and is in the Pamplona bullring were youngsters sidestep cows like brave matadors.

Hollywood Gold Cup:
In the 27th annual running of the Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park, Native Diver becomes the first horse to win this race twice in a row. He jumps out to an early lead and wins easily by almost five lenghts. O'Hara is second and Travel Orb third.

Ryun's Record Mile:
Before 15,000 track fans at the All-America track and Field invitational meet in Berkeley, California 19-year-old Kansas freshman JimRyun sets a new world record for the mile of three minutes, fifty-one and three tenths seconds, more than two full seconds off the old record. He's the first American to hold the record since Glenn Cunningham, 32 years ago.

Gemini 10: Space Firsts:
Astronauts Michael Collins and John Young return to earth safely in a pinpoint splashdown after three of the most daring, dramatic, and triumphant days in space for any previous American manned mission.

Several FIRSTS are scored, including an altitude record, a double rendezvous, and activity with an orbiting object.

Gemini 10 A Success:
Official NASA films show view of the earth from 185 miles in space. Also, close-ups of the dramatic rendezvous and docking of Gemini 10 and the Agena Rocket, separation, and to start off reentry. Close-up views of the pinpoint splashdown, rescue, at welcome aboard the carrier Guadalcanal.

Sports:
Powerboat Thriller:
The British motorboat racing drivers hold their 80 -- mile race on a choppy sea. The pace reaches 50 miles an hour and frequently more. Tommy Sopwith gets the checkered flag only to be disqualified for missing a buoy. Keith Horseman wins.

Pennel Sets Pole Vault Record
Pole vaulter John Pennel of Glendale, California, sets a new world record mark for the event, clearing 17 feet, six and one-quarter inches at the Los Angeles Times International games. 26-year-old Pennel eclipses the all record, held by a roommate Bob Seagren.

Free-Fall Thrills:
At the Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the U. S. Army parachute team,Golden Knight's, put the new Rogallo Flexwing parachute through some fancy paces. Spectacular free -- fall maneuvers test the parachute for future military or civilian use.

Death Valley Hiker:
28-year-old Jean Pierre Marquant, a former French paratrooper, finishes a seven day, 100 mile hike across death Valley, California, and becomes the first man in history to walk across the hottest spot on earth. Ground temperatures reached one hundred ninety degrees.

Sports:
Salinas Rodeo:
The annual Monterey County Sheriff's rodeo at Salinas, California, brings out the best of the bronc-busting, bull-riding set. For a finale, the mad bareback stampede, and the field is full of wild broncs and scrambling riders.

Five Nations Swim Meet:
American swimmers take six of eight events outscore the Soviet union 11 to 6 in the two-day five Nations swim meet in Moscow. Don Schollander, Olympic champ, with both the 100 and 100-meter men's freestyle events.

Lucy and Pat Wed:
Lucy Baines Johnson, 19, becomes the bride of Patrick John Nugent in a ceremony of solemn splendor in Washington's National Shrine of TheImmaculate Conception. Later, 700 guests attend the gala White House reception before the newlyweds depart for a Bahama honeymoon.

All-Stars -- -- 0
72,000 fans At Soldiers Field, Chicago, watch the Green Bay Packers rout The College All-Stars, 38 to nothing. Quarterback Bart Starr and fullback Jim Taylor are the standout performers for the Packers. The All-Stars make only 10 first downs all night.
