NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1966 (UE66061)

Modern Caveman:
28-year-old David Lafferty, former RAF Intelligence Officer, sets a new world record for staying underground alone. He lived 400 feet beneath the surface in Goff Cave, Cheddar, England, for 130 days, beating the old record by four days. He burned 850 candles and read 200 books.

Sports:
Model Airplane Meet:
The U.S. Navy is host to the 35th annual National Model Airplane Championships at the Glenview, Illinois Naval Air Station. Entries from every state and a dozen foreign countries put their aircraft through some fancy paces. Radio controlled flights are most popular.

International marathon:
In Spain, The First Annual International Marathon is held. Olympic champ and world recordholder Abebe Bikila goes against runners from Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and Spain.Bikila wins easily in three hours, 20 minutes and 28 seconds, almost his record time in Tokyo.

Four-Day March:
In the City of Nijmegen, Holland, walking has been refined to an art. For half a century, the four-day walk has been an annual event. In the line of march are men, women, and children, military units, sports club, and citizens. The oldest walker is 85. They sing is they march.

A preview of actualites and simulations of the adventures around the moon of the Lunar Orbiter Spacecraft. The facts of how it achieved its perfect orbit and what it did when it began its circling. Flood Damage In Nebraska:
A graphic report of the drenching of a wide section of Central Nebraska by belated mid-summer torrents that unleashed 12 inches of rain in the region in one day. Damage in the millions by pelting rain and the floods that followed.

Dutch Royalty On Vacation:
The Dutch Royal family summering in Italy and a villa named the Happy Elephant -- -- a royalty en masse beside the Mediterranean.

The Commonwealth Games:
The highlights of the British Commonwealth games at Kingston, Jamaica, featuring first films of Prince Charles, heir to the throne, playing polo.

Wonderful Willie:
May's 535th Homer Tops Foxx's Record:
In back to back games At Candlestick Park, San Francisco, Willie Mays hit his 530th and 535th career home run to tie and break JimmyFoxx's total and take sole possession of second place in the record books. Only Babe Ruth, with 714, has hit more than willie.

Woman Hansom cab Driver:
22 year-old Maggie Cogan is one of very few drivers off hansom cabs in New York's Central Park. Her pet cat, Clyde, is a constant companion. Romantics of all ages have made the horse and carriage ride through Central Park a Manhattan must.

Taiwan Tea Harvest:
Taiwan marks the 100th anniversary of the export of tea with a bumper crop. She has flourished here for over 1000 years. The refining process takes the leafs from the field to a factory where they are dried, massaged, fermented, sifted, refined and packed.

Sports:
Kayak Race:
In Spain, a kayak race on on the Sella River brings out 108 contestants from 14 countries. Fans follow the race on a special train which chugs along the riverbank, stops frequently, then loads up again and continues. It is a 30 year old custom.

Austrian Disaster:
In Austria, floods send waters raging through the Providence of East Tyrol. The rising water traps many in their homes. Five thousand tourists are also marooned. Damage has not yet been assessed. A wide area of countryside is evacuated.

Indiana Explosion:
Five are dead and one missing, presumed dead, in a sudden explosion and a wire factory's executive office building in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Two rescue workers sustain fatal heart attacks. Damage estimated at $5 million, the clause undetermined.

Manhattan Mural:
Children paint a block-long mural on a plywood fence, bordering their play street in midtown Manhattan. The scenes depict summer in the city. The kids are neighbors of Lincoln Center and it's their second annual artistic fence-painting.

Sports:
Aerobatic Thriller:
At TushIeng Airfield, Moscow, some 15 nations are represented at the 11th world championships in aerobatic. Propellor-driven aircraft, handled by some of the best stunt pilots in the world do loops, dives, twists, and turns while the judge is score.

A A U Swim Meet:
At Lincoln, Nebraska records topple at the 16th National A A U outdoor swimming and diving championships. Both Don Schollander and Pokey Watson set world records and the 200-meter men's and women's free-style, respectively. In all, nine world marks are set and one equalled in the four-day meet.

Turkish Earthquake:
Over 3000 people are killed in eastern Turkey in the worst earthquake in 23 years. Some 139 villages are totally destroyed. The area hit borders on Russia, Iran, and Iraq. United States Air Force planes bring in doctors and supplies.

Ranger Homecoming:
The attack carrier USS Ranger arrives in San Francisco after nine months of fighting in Vietnam waters. Over 5000 relatives and friends greet her crew. The first airstrikes over Haiphong were flown from the Ranger.

Humphrey Wedding:
Former Miss Minnesota competitor, Donna Erickson, becomes the bride of Robert Humphrey, son of the Vice-President, in a wedding and St. Olaf's Roman Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Surprise guest at the reception is Lucy Johnson Nugent.

Sports:
Little League Finale:
At Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Houston Little Leaguers top West New York, New Jersey, 8 to 2, To Win the World Series. A total of 11 hits wins it for Houston, with two doubles and two homers included. Houston also won in 1950.

Vietnam Comment:
At The American Legion Convention in Washington, DC, President Johnson takes a firm stand on United State's policy in Vietnam. He warns that the war there could lead to a red Chinese-encouraged series of wars. Meanwhile, President DeGaulle, on a world tour, repeats his stand that US troops must withdraw from Vietnam to promote peace.

Sports:
Canoe Race On The Hudson:
The Providence of Manitoba beats Alberta in the great Montréal-to-New York Canoe Race. Ten, six-men canoes cover the 470 mile journey to publicize Canada's Worlds Fair, Expo 67, part of the Canadian Centennial. The paddlers are Eskimos, Indians, and Canadian woodsmen.

The Hambletonian:
At the Du Quoin STate Fair grounds in Illinois, 25,000 racing fans see Kerry Way take the Hambletonian in two straight heat, setting a world record for total time. Running second in both heats is Polaris. Harness Racing's Classic has a purse of $122,000.

Nature's Treasure:
A modern breakthrough in the discovery and mining of potash occurs in the prairie Provinces Of Western Canada. Some five billion tons are discovered there. Potassium from potash is vital to plant and animal life, business, industry and the space program.

Animal Almanac:
At Catskill Game Farm in upstate New York, children and adults flock to feed all kinds of animals which rove openly. Llamas, deer, goats, camels -- -- some 3000 animal species are there. And, in Dallas zoo, we meet Vicky and Mickey, baby gorillas.

Sports:
Water Ski Championships:
The best water skiers in the country compete in the National Championships at Christopher Lake, Miami, Florida. Slalom, jumping and tricks are the major events. High speeds and spectacular spills feature this four-day whirl.

Stock Car Spectacular:
Yet Brands Hatch Track, England, Drivers Zip through the Oval in a wild and woolly Stock Car Race of the Stars Trophy. Cars collide, tires explode, wheels fly into the grandstand, but Ted Janes lasts out the race -- -- and wreckage -- -- and wins it.

Tragic Exodus: Red China Expels Eight Nuns:
Eight European nuns, accused of spying in Peking, are expelled from red China. One collapses at the border and is taken across on a baggage handcart. Later, she dies. Their 100 year old school for diplomats children in Peking is mobbed and damaged by Red Youth Guards who hate all foreign influences.

Verwoerd Assassinated:
We assassination of South African prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd recalls an earlier attempt on his life in 1960. A wealthy, white farmer fires two bullets into the prime ministers head at a fair in Johannesburg. Verwoerd was the architect of the controversial apartheid plan of race separation.

S. S. Hanseatic Afire:
The German liner Hanseatic burns at her Hudson River pier in New York city, causing extensive damage and injuring seven firemen. Had the flames broke out at sea, it would have been a major catastrophe. 400 passengers change European voyage plans.

Blue Angels Plane Crash:
At Toronto, and thousands witness the fiery death of a United States Navy Blue Angel jet daredevil. 31 year old Lieutenant Commander Dick Oliver off Fort Mill, South Carolina, and loses control of his plane, crashes, and is instantly killed at the Canadian National Exhibition.

Sports:
International Bicycle Race:
In West Germany bicycle racing is a popular sport. 40 women cyclists from throughout the world compete in a 75 Mile street race won by Belgium's Yvonne Reynders. Meanwhile, Germany's Rudi Altig nips Anquetil of France at the finish off the 500 mile race.

Water pole Jumping:
In Holland, the pole-jumping National Championships bring out the best in this unique event. Unlike pole vaulting, a running start, a flying leap over a ditch filled with water, a grab at a pole, and he hoped for dry landing on the other side is the object.

Miss America:
19-year-old Jane Anne Jayroe, Miss Oklahoma wins The Miss America title at Atlantic City. The runners-up our Misses California, Tennessee, Ohio, and New Hampshire. JaneAnnes's ambition is to become a musical conductor.

World's Biggest Ship:
The 209,000 ton tanker, Idemitsu Maru, is launched in Yokohama, Japan. It's the biggest ship ever built by man. It will carry oil from Persia to Japan. It took seven months and $15 million to build her. Next year, she may have an even bigger sister ship.

British Air Show:
The 1966 Farnborough Air Show, open-air shop window of the British Aircraft Industry, diaplays airplanes of every design for every use. Buyers represent nations around the world. Everything from jet airliners to one-seat helicopters are shown -- -- and flown.

Sports:
Tennis Championships:
At Forest Hills, New York, Maria Bueno of Brazil beats Nancy Richey of Texas to take theU.S. Women's title. Fred Stolle battles an Australian teammate and comes out on top to take The Men's title in a four-set struggle. It is Stolle's first major tournament win.
