NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1966 (UE66071)

Vietnam Elections:
In South Vietnam, more then a 4 million voters cast ballots to elect a Constituent Assembly. The elected assembly will create a new constitution and propose national elections. The heavy turnout at the polls is seen as a victory over Vietcong terror tactics.

Gemini II: New Space Records:
Commanders Charles Conrad and Richard Gordon surpass all of America's previous space exploration flights with three-day journey which embraces seven man-in-space records. Among them, first-orbit docking, altitude record of 850 miles, and on-board computer navigation assistance. A bullseye splashdown caps get off.

Gemini 11's Stunning View:
Astronaut Gordon's Space-Walk; the tethered Gemini vehicles spinning in space; and fantastic views from as high as 850 miles up are all included in official NASA in-space films of Gemini 11's flight. The automatic splashdown and recovery is also shown in dramatic close-up.

President Marcos on State Visit:
Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos and his wife are greeted by President and Mrs. Johnson at the White House, beginning beginning a two-week state visit. The Philippine leader praises Johnson's firm stand in Asia and later attends the opening of the Metropolitan Opera in New York as the guest of Mrs. Johnson.

First Lady Tours:
Point Reyes, California, is dedicated as a national seashore by Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson. It is the first stop on a three-day beautification tour of the West. The first lady also stops at an old Mission school in Carmel to greet children there.

Moscow Circus Premier:
A circus premier and Cologne, West Germany, by the world-famous Moscow State Circus. Lions, Tigers, daredevils, trapeze artists, and clowns dazzle a crowd of over 5000. It is the world's guest appearance for the circus in West Germany.

Southern California tops Texas before 42,000 fans in Austin. Final score: Southern Cal 10, Texas 6. U.S.C's quarterback Troy Winslow scores after a field goal. For Texas, Bill Bradley tallies the only six points the Longhorns are able to notch.

North Carolina State-------10
The nation's top-ranked football powerhouse, Michigan State, puts on a dazzling ground gained display and tops North Carolina State 28 to 10. Michigan's Jimmy Raye, Clint Jones, and Bob Apisa spearheaded the Spartans attack, with all three scoring.

London Blaze:
One of the biggest fires since the days of the blitz destroy his a suburban London lumber yard. 400 firemen and 50 fire trucks battle the inferno. Residents nearby are evacuated when flames threaten a gasoline storage tank.

Dutch Queen Opens Parliament:
With great pomp and ceremony, Queen Julianna rides through the streets of the Hague on her way to open Parliament. The entire royal family is in attendance as the Queen's speech is delivered. Later, her Majesty appears on the palace balcony.

Fashion Parade:
A wild fashion show off kooky Carnaby Street fashions is held in London. While rock and roll music blasts the ears, models bombard the buyers eyes with what the well-dressed (or half-dressed) Mod will wear. The topper is a break away dress!

At South Bend, the Irish of Notre Dame make a great debut beating their Hoosier rival, Purdue, 26 to 14. Two sophomores, Terry Hanratty and Jim Seymour, team up in a great passing combination for three touchdowns. Final -- Irish 26 -- -- Boilermakers makers 14.

British Jet in Vertical Flight:
In a forest in Bedford, England, British aircraft manufacturers demonstrate the amazing maneuverability of their P-1127 jet fighter. It is a high-speed, high-altitude fighter that can land and take off vertically just like a helicopter.

Theater Owners Honor Sophia Loren:
Walt Disney and Sophia Loren are both honored at the wind-up banquet climaxing a four-day convention of the National Association of theater owners held in New York City. A new golden age for the motion picture industry is predicted.

North Carolina Upsets Michigan:
At Ann Arbor, the Tar Heels of North Carolina upset highly-rated Michigan 21 to 7. Alert defensive recoveries of Michigan fumbles set up two touchdowns. Tar Heel quarterback, Danny Talbott throws one touchdown pass and carries into the end zone for another.

U C L A Tops Missouri:
At Los Angeles Coliseum, UCLA takes on Missouri. Both are undefeated. Halfback Mel Farr scores for the Bruins in the final minute, assuring UCLA off a 24 -- 15 victory. Missouri had scored twice in the fourth quarter to narrow the score to 17 -- 15.

Orioles Sweep Series:
The Baltimore Orioles shut out the Dodgers and game three and four all the world series -- -- with identical 1 -- nothing scores -- -- making a sweep out the fall classic. Home runs by the Blair in the third game and Robinson in the final game, make the big difference.

Johnson Visits United Nations:
President Johnson confers with UN Secretary General U Thant at the United nations. With Secretary of state Rusk and Ambassador Goldberg they discuss Vietnam and other world issues. Then, the president speaks at a political rally in Newark, New Jersey.

Notre Dame Trounces Army.
At South Bend, a sellout crowd watches the Irish run roughshod over Army. The sensational passing combination of Terry Hanratty to Jim Seymour Spark the Irish to a 35-to-nothing win, all the touchdowns coming in the first half.

President Johnson On Tour:
In a hectic two days, President Johnson announces Social Security benefit increases in Baltimore -- -- then flies to New York for a hard-hitting campaign in support of local and state Democratic candidates. He is visits Brooklyn, Staten Island, reviews the Columbus date parade and shakes at least 2 million hands.

Dog Bites Lion:
In France, a Lion Cub and a dachsund pup Provides Plenty of Laughs and Rough-and-tumble action for zoo visitors. The peppy pup nips at the heels, tail, and nose of the lion. When the lunch is served, the doggy is a real chow hound. King Lion meets his match.

Spectacular Boat Race
In Paris, on the river Seine, a field of 90 high-powered motorboats roar up and down for six hours. The Six Hours Of Paris is considered the world's toughest motorboat race. An Italian catamaran wins. Only 40 boats are able to finish.

L. B. J. Departs for Asian Tour:
From Dulles International Airport, president and Mrs. Johnson, leave on a six nation, 17-day Asian tour. They will visit Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Korea. The seven nation summit conference on Vietnam at Manila is the prime purpose of the trip.

Robot Plane With Homing Missile:
At England's Royal Aircraft Establishment, the Jindivik radio controlled target aircraft is demonstrated. She is the prey in a mid-air game of tag with a homing missile which zeros in on heat waves. A flaming direct hit and the plane crashes.

Tourist Shuttle Tour
We mini-trains from the New York World's Fair have now been pressed into service in the nation's capital. They are used as shuttle trains for tourist. For ten cents a person, the one hour 15 minute tour is the biggest bargain in DC.

Cardinals vs Cowboys:
In one off the great defensive battles in pro-football this season, to St. Louis Cardinal and Dallas Cowboys play to a 10-10 tie. One touchdown each and a field goal apiece knot the score. Both try tie-breaking field goals, and miss, in the dying seconds.

Warm Welcome For President:
Colorful, enthusiastic celebrations greet President and Mrs. Johnson on their arrival in Honolulu and Pago-Pago, American Samoa. A royal welcome complete with hula dancers, flowers, hand shaking, and record-breaking crowds mark the beginning of the president's 17-day, six-nation Asian tour which includes the upcoming Manila conference.

Manhattan Tragedy:
A five-alarm fire in a block of stores results in the worst single disaster in the history of the New York fire Department. Twelve firemen are killed when a floor collapses in a burning drug store. The bodies are found only after a twelve-hour battle against the flames. The dead heroes leave 12 widows and 32 children.

Colgate Shuts out Princeton:
A rugged red Raiders team from Colgate tackles the Tigers of Princeton before 34,000 at Princeton's Palmer Stadium. Sophomore quarterback Ron Burton scoots over from 16 yards out for the lone score that hands Princeton its first shut out in 33 games. Final Colgate 7, Princeton 0.

Asian Nations Welcome L. B. J.:
President Johnson's whirlwind six-nation, 17-date tour takes him to Wellington, New Zealand, for receptions, sheep-shearing, and barbecues.Tumultuous welcomes greet him in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. He's greeted by Philippine President Marcos and Manila and the summit takes own a note of hope -- -- but cautiously.

Welsh Tragedy:
Some 200 persons, mostly children, or killed in an avalanche of coal slag which he buries part of the village ofAberfan, in South Wales. The local schoolhouse, a farm, in 16 miner's cottages were engulfed in the slide. All Wales is shocked.

Michigan State Tops Purdue:
At Spartan Stadium, Unbeaten Michigan State Wins Big over Purdue. Hawaiian Fullback Bob Apisa scores three while Spartan quarterback Jim Raye's passing arm demolishes the Boilermaker's defense. Final score Michigan 41, Purdue 20.
