NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1966 (UE66091)

Pearl Harbor Remembered:
On the 25th anniversary of the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, a nation remembers this day of infamy. Scenes show the destruction of that awful day which left 2400 dead and 18 ships damaged or sunk. At the USS Arizona Memorial, 1100 American heroes are entombed.

Francisco Franco:
Spanish dictator Franco introduces a new national constitution before the parliament. It includes some liberalization on the national politics, including wider voting and religious rights. Still unanswered, however, is the question of 74-year-old Franco's successor.

Christmas Tree:
A 65-foot red fir from the Sierra Mountains in California is swung into place on the White House lawn. The National Community Christmas Tree highlights this year's pageant of peace. Some 2500 multicolored lights will decorate the 80-year-old giant fir.

Sports: Notre Dame vs U.S.C:
Notre Dame takes an undisputed possession of number one national collegiate ranking with a Merciless pounding off Southern California 51 to nothing. O'Brien-to-Seymour
passes account for two touchdowns of the seven notched by the Irish. It's the worst defeat In Southern Cal history.

Winter's Debut:
Many sections of the country dig out of winter's first heavy snowfalls. Up to 5 feet bury parts of western New York, the middle West, and the Rockies. No deaths or injuries reported, but travel on highways is at a standstill.

Personalities in the News:
President Johnson and Mexican President Ordaz tour a U. S.-Mexican dam in Mexico.

U Thant is unanimously reappointed Secretary-General of the United nation's.

Soviet Premier Kosygin visits President De Gaulle.

Former Nazi Kurt Kiesinger is elected West German Chancellor.

Sports -- -- football: Boston Downs Buffalo:
The Boston Patriots upset the favored Buffalo Bills and game in the Eastern division lead in the AFL. Jim Nance's 65-yard touchdown run and Babe Parilli's 3-yard keeper, notch the two Boston touchdowns. Final score Boston 14 Buffalo 3.

California Storm:
Five consecutive days of torrential rains and gale winds batter south-Central California. Homes and roads are flooded, bridges washed out, residents marooned. It's the worst flooding in 10 years in the area and 16 deaths are related to the weather.

Rhodesian Crisis:
Britain asks the United Nations to help settle the question of Rhodesian independence. They request economic sanctions and an arms embargo against the rebel government. It's the latest move in a 13 month battle by Britain to crush Prime Minister Ian Smith's white minority regime.

Chicago EL Crash:
Two cars of an elevated train in Chicago are derailed and plunged 30 feet to the ground. One man is killed, 25 are injured. It's the first ask the out its kind in over a half-century. Tract obstruction or a jumped switch may have caused it.

Sports -- Trampoline Championships:
The National Dutch Trampoline Championships are held in Amsersfoort, Holland. Imported from America, trampoline jumping has become very popular in a short time. Judges award points on the difficulty of the acrobatics and their overall performance.

Aegean Tragedy:
The Greek ferry, Heraklion, is sunk in the Aegean Sea during a furious storm. 235 are dead or missing, 49 so life. The ship was on a routine overnight crossing from Crete to Athens Port, piraeus. Cars and trucks battered open the bow of the ship and 15 minutes later it went down.

Marineland Shows a Rare Dolphins:
For the first time in the United States, for a rare Risso's Dolphins go on display at Marine land, Florida. Their strange markings are caused by teeth wounds from other Dolphins. They were found aground on the Beach 75 miles away from their new home.

Sights And Sounds of Christmas:
The sights and sounds of the Yuletide season. From the giant tree at New York's Rockefeller Center -- to various decorations -- too busy shoppers -- toys -- and the beautiful carol, Silent Night, both an American and German choir.

Washington Has Seasonal Look:
Winter comes to the nation's capital as 9 inches of snow falls in a sudden storm. National Airport is closed for several hours. Washington takes on the seasonal greeting card look and the holiday mood becomes official with the lighting of the national tree.

New York Honors Marine Hero:
Sergeant Robert O'Malley of New York, first Marine to win the medal of honor in Vietnam, gets another decoration. Mayor John Lindsay awards him the city's gold medal of honor in ceremonies at City Hall in Manhattan -- -- while the city Council and Sergeant O'Malley's parents look on.

Congressmen visit United Nations:
A delegation of Congressmen, their wives and aides, Visit the United Nations for a day-a long tour. Their host is U. S. Ambassador Arthur Goldberg. Discussions, briefings, and a visit to the Security Council in session are all part of a busy day at the UN.

Presidential Aide Resigns:
Presidential press secretary Bill Moyers announces his resignation. He will become the publisher of a Long Island newspaper. As well as press secretary, moyers was an intimate friend and adviser to President Johnson.

Sports -- Circus Thrills On Ice:
The world-famous Russian State Circus-On-Ice performs in Holland. Tanya Tebedeva thrills the crowd by balancing, own skates, in the middle of a thin pole. Skating bears provide plenty of laughs and the show ends with a whirling folk-scene finale.

Capital Christmas:
150 children from various Boy's clubs and neighborhood houses are the guest of Mrs. Johnson at a White House Christmas party. A marionette show, gifts from Santa, and refreshments highlight the afternoon. The first lady and daughter Lynda greet, escort, and mingle with the kids.

Miracle in California:
A train wreck and plane crash, both in California, bring only minor injuries to one person. 33 freight cars derailed in Burbank and a tower operator is hurt leaping to safety. A naval attack bomber crashes in Rossmore, but the pilot ejects safely and no one is hurt on the ground.

Elastic Water?
At Caltech in Pasadena, 28 year-old graduate student David James, discovers a rare kind of elastic water. It flows from a container with a siphon-like action, defying gravity, climbing the side of the jar and over the lip. It can even be cut with scissors!

Barrel Jumping Championships:
The 17th annual World's Barrel Jumping Championship is held in Grossinger, New York. Entries are among the top leapers from the U.S. and Canada. Defending champ Kenneth LeBel and challenger Jacques St. Pierre both clear 16 barrels, but St. Pierre's jump is longer and he's the new champ!

Fiery Death:
For persons are killed and three injured in a collision and fire in Indianapolis involving three cars and a gasoline truck. Firemen fought the flames for two hours. Nearby homes, schools, and a shopping center were in effect you waited as the fuel spilled into the sewer system.

San Francisco Subway:
San Francisco will soon boast the most modern subway system in the world. It's Bay Area Rapid Transit will link San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley, cover 75 miles and be completely operated by computers. First passenger service expected in 1968.

Glass Exhibition:
Glass design is studied by apprentices at a special secondary school in Budapest. From the drawing board to the finished product, the fine glassware is a combination of design and execution. An exhibition shows the best all the year's work in a formal setting.

Surfing Championships:
At Makaha Beach only island of Oahu in Hawaii, the 14th annual international surfing championships are held. Judges come from Peru, Australia and California. Points are awarded on the basis of the longest ride and most difficult and biggest waves.
