NEWSREEL HIGHLIGHTS OF 1967 (UE67001)

PAPAL CHRISTMAS BLESSING
Pope Paul VI expresses hope for a "miracle of goodwill" to bring about peace in Vietnam. His Christmas message and blessing is received by thousands in St. Peter's Square. The Pontiff celebrated Midnight Mass, meanwhile, in Florence.

JOHNSON GREETS VETERANS
At Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, President and Mrs. Johnson are among a huge crowd of relatives and friends who welcome home 18 wounded Vietnam veterans. The GI's are taken to military hospitals for further treatment.

BOB HOPE ENTERTAINS TROOPS
For the 25th year in a row, Bob Hope brings his annual Christmas Show to troops in the field. At Camranh Bay, South Vietnam, he jokes, dances, sings, brings on pretty girls in a two-hour revue which has the GI's screaming for more.

NEW HOMES FOR REFUGEES
Some 11 hundred villagers are moved from one community to modern apartments in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong. The exodus is necessary since a man-made reservoir, sorely needed to boost fresh water, will soon cover their homes with a lake.

LONDON WIG CLINIC
Europe's first wig-clinic, in London, is a huge success. The false top-mops are cut, styled, dyed, shaped, shorn, and returned to the wearer with an entire "new look." The transformation is startling and so is the towering style, but not a strand's out of place!

IN WORLD POLITICS:
The historic 7-nation summit conference on Vietnam at Manila. President Johnson makes a surprise visit to the troops in Vietnam.

IN DOMESTIC POLITICS:
The '66 election serves as a significant preview of the '68 presidential election. Governors, Senators, and Congressmen are chosen. Among the big winners: Romney in Michigan, Percy in Illinois, Edward Brooke in Massachusetts elected first Black Senator in U.S. History, Governor Rockefeller wins third term in New York, Actor Ronald Reagan becomes Governor of California, and Mrs. Lurleen Wallace succeeds her husband as Governor of Alabama and becomes only the third lady Governor in American History.

ANOTHER MILESTONE:
Robert Weaver appointed first Negro Cabinet Member. U Thant unanimously reappointed to Secretary-General's Post. President DeGaulle makes State Visit to Moscow. In the same year, he evicts NATO from France.

Florence, Italy, suffers the worst art catastrophe of all time in huge flood. A sniper kills 16, and wounds 33, at the University of Texas. Some two hundred killed, including 81 children in slag slide in Wales. Pope Paul meets with the Archbishop of Canterbury in Rome.

Luci Baines Johnson weds Patrick Nugent in the "Wedding of the year." In Space, pictures of landing sites on the moon are taken and the Gemini Program is concluded triumphantly with the U.S. holding almost every record in manned space flight. Gemini lays a solid foundation for the upcoming Apollo Moon-Landing Program and the U.S. and Russia sign a Space Treaty banning all weapons in outer space and encouraging the further exploration of the atmosphere.

LYNDON B. JOHNSON'S PORTRAIT
President Johnson's portrait by artist Peter Hurd sets off a controversy as uell as the Chief Executive's temper. Lyndon B. Johnson calls it, "the ugliest thing I ever saw.' Ladybird is amazed at her husband's anger and the painting goes on a national tour.

BOAT CRASH
At Lake Coniston, England, British speed ace, Donald Campbell, is killed when his Hydroplane "Bluebird," goes out of control, flips out of the water, crashes and explodes. Divers found only his helmet, shoes, and oxygen mask.

VEGAS MOTEL
Six persons are killed and twelve injured in a Las Vegas motel explosion, set off by a man committing suicide. The blast occurred while most of the guests were asleep. Damage was estimated at 200 thousand dollars in one of the strangest stories ever to come out of Las Vegas

HAITIAN INVASION
A would-be invasion "army," headed to take over Haiti, is arrested in Florida. They were ready to push off from the Florida Keys in an old fishing boat converted to a troop ship. Exiled Cubans, Haitians, and Americans were in the makeshift group.

CANADA CENTENNIA
Canada celebrates its centennial year with all manner of pomp and ceremony, throughout all the provinces. Fireworks, balloons, birthday cakes, parades... all help to make a fiesta mood which will continuo during the year-long celebration.

CHINESE FISHERMEN
In the Taiwan Strait, Red Chinese fisherman from the mainland are hosted aboard a Free Chinese Navy gunboat and treated with kindness and affection. The lesson pays off. In the past four years, 10 thousand fishermen have been guests, and many have later decided to sail back to Taiwan and freedom.

BOXING
In Nagoya, Japan, the World Bantamweight title is on the line as champion Masahiko Harada faces Jose Model of Mexico. Model sustains a pounding for most of the 15 rounds and Harada keeps the title by unanimous decision.

GIRL KARATE STUDENT
New York actress Bonnie Schoen demonstrates what she's learned at Karate school about the fine art of self-defense. Her instructor acts as the persistent male and is alternately punched, kicked, and karate-"chopped" with every style in the book.

SENIOR BOWL
At Mobile, Alabama, All-Stars from North and South face one another in the Senior Bowl. The North, stronger in the air, with the deciding two touchdowns coming the last quarter. Final score: North 35, South 13; the first Northern victory since 1960.

PRESIDENT JOHNSON
President Johnson, in his "State of the Union" message, proposes a surcharge of six percent on corporate and personal income taxes. The money would be used in support of poverty programs at home and to finance the war in Vietnam for an estimated two years.

PREMIERE
In London, the Royal World Premiere of Charles Chaplin's film, "A Countess from Hong Kong," attracts top names from show business and society. The gala charity aids the "Fight for Sight" Campaign. Princess Alexandra represents the Royal Family.'

POLITICS
In the spotlights of politics, Adam Clayton Powell is denied his House seat, Lester Maddox is chosen as Georgia's new Governor, freshmen Senators are greeted by Vice-President Humphrey, and an election in the Bahama Islands, their first, ends in deadlock.

HOCKEY
In the Canadian Centennial International Hockey Tournament the host country takes top spot, followed by Czechoslovakia, Russia, and the United States. Russia was defending world champ. Canada now eyes the Vienna World Championships in March.

YACHT PATTIE
A fast, new Australian yacht, the "Dame Pattie," beats "Gretel" in the second trial race to produce a challenger for the coveted "America's Cup." "Pattie" finishes almost two minutes out in front and so far, she's the one to watch.

TRACK MEET The All-American Games in San Francisco's Cow palace brings V.S. and World record-holders together. Neal Steinhauer of Oregon sets a wed indoor record for the shot put while John Rambo ties the American jump record.

NEW YORK FIRE
A gas main explodes and burns sending a torch of flare 200 feet in the air in one of New York City's most spectacular fires in its history. 600 firefighters fought the flames which destroyed nine homes and damaged eight others. Several hundred persons were evacuated with no deaths or serious injuries reported.

SNOW
Mexico, Italy, and Spain are all hit by extreme weather conditions including snow and freezing temperatures. 34 die in Mexico. Blizzards isolate many Italian v11lages. Madrid gets its first snow of the season. It's all part of the crazy-quilt of winter.

PARIS TALKS
French President DeGaulle meets with Chancellor Koisinger and Foreign Minister Brandt of Germany to agree on a mutual policy toward Eastern Europe. Both nations move toward friendlier relations with the east in the hope of reuniting Germany.

VIET REFUGEES
Some six thousand South Vietnamese peasants are moved from their villages.

FOSTER BOY
4-year old Kenny Cunningham of Colorado Springs, meets the President in the Chief Executive's White House office. Young Kenny is this yours "poster boy" for the United Cerebral Palsy Association. The President called him, "quite a trouper."

SUPER BOWL
In the first Super Bowl, the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs, 35 to 10. Bart Starr passes for two Packers scores, with McGhee catching. Pitts scores twice, also. The Packers wrap it up with three touchdowns in the second half.

FASHIONS
Now summer fashions are previewed in both London and Rome. They include "the boubou", a summer dress of African prints with that nation's language on the hem. Fontana show a "hideaway" beach tent, underneath which a lady can change her suit, and a "pausokatu" outfit, with embroidered pants.

ERNIE TERELL
Challenger Ernie Terell works out in training for his upcoming heavyweight championship fight with titleholder Cassius Clay. He won an argument over unequal poster billing by threatening to walk out on the bout. Meanwhile, Clay still could be drafted.

NICARAGUA
Two days of violent political street-fighting in Mangua, brings death to thirty-five rebels with twice as many wounded. The revolt comes from opposition to the ruling Somoza family. Moderate Fernando Aguero, General Somozals opponent, admitted an aborted coup.

WEATHER
Weather shows two faces in three separate spots: Missouri: A sudden tornado kills one, injures twenty. New York: Mid-winter temperatures soar to a Spring-like 67 degrees. Rio De Janeiro: Rain, floods, and mudslides kill 500 persons.

PODGORNY IN ROME
Soviet President Nikolai Podgorny makes a week-long visit to Italy. He's greeted on his arrival in Rome by President Saragat and other diplomats. He meets for talks on expanding Soviet-Italian trade and a proposed future European defense conference.

KY VISITS AUSTRALIA
Premier and Mrs. Ky make a goodwill visit to Australia. In Brisbane: violent demonstrations mark Ky's arrival, In Sydney: Prime Minster Holt is host on a boat trip across the city's harbor.

CONG PRISONERS
Vietcong prisoners are taken after a V.C. regiment is crushed in the heaviest fighting near Saigon since the start of the war. Meanwhile, the hospital ship U.S.S. Repose cares for thousands of Vietnamese civilians and children in a tradition of mercy.

S. S. ATLANTIC
Off Port Everglades, Florida, the Caribbean cruise ship S.S. Atlantic goes aground on a reef. For three days, various methods are used to float her free. Meanwhile, the passengers enjoy themselves as if nothing happened; finally, she's towed back to her home port.

RUSSIANS ASHORE
Russian sailors, men and women, take shore leave in San Francisco. Among their adventures: a feast at Fisherman's Wharf, cable car rides... shopping, hot dogs, buffalo meat... and beer! The crew comes from an oceanography vessel whose home port is Vladivostok, Russia
