200 Axis divisions (200 million men) driving toward Leningrad in the North, Moscow in the center and Ukraine in the South. By December the Germans had captured 500,000 square miles of Russia.

However, the Germany Blitz failed to work against the Russians. As one defense line was penetrated the total line fell back and consolidated with the next line. The results were the deeper the Germans advanced into Russia the more resistance they encountered. Odessa was the scene of a heroic siege of two months. Sevastopol an eight-month defense inch-by-inch, street-by-street, house-by-house and then room-by-room.

This heroic resistance and total devastation of cities forced the Germans to leave the safety of their tanks and battle in the rubble. With fierce determination and fighting some of the bloodiest fighting of the war, the Russians stopped the Germans at the gates of Moscow.

The Russians mounted a major counterattack and by spring 1942 had pushed the Germans back on all fronts. For the first time the legend of German invincibility was shattered. The last great battles for Russia were ended with the winter campaign of 1942 with the Germans in total defeat in the Battle Of Russia.

Scenes include some of the most ferocious street fighting of WWII showing dead German soldiers and destroyed tanks. Point of view shot of a Russian sniper killing German soldiers. Short (3 seconds) scene of the boots only of marching Nazi soldiers.
