It was a bleak time for the Allies.
By late summer 1943 the Allies began a desperate and costly campaign. B-17’s of the American Air Force taking off from England began strategic daylight bombing runs deep into Germany without fighter escort. The Allies did not have a long-range fighter at that time. The B-17’s fought their way to the targets deep into Germany and fought their way back to England. The English fog and heavy losses stopped the deep penetration of American bombers.
In February 1944 new B-17’s with 14 gun turrets and the new P-51 long-range fighter arrived in England. Daylight bombing resumed with major strikes against oil and fuel facilities. With fighter escort all the way to the targets the B-17’s began to have a major impact on the German oil facilities. Slowly, but surely, the German war machine started to slow due to lack of fuel.
The German’s made a major breakthrough with the development of the ME-262 jet that could have turned the tide of the war. However, Hitler saw this new aircraft as a light bomber and forbid its development as a fighter. This proved to be a major mistake.
By June 1944 Germany had lost its oil production, its cities, and its air superiority. It was time for Europe to be invaded. With the Normandy invasion the war changed to a land battle. The Germans were able to keep the allied forces on small beachheads for six weeks. The breakthrough came at St. Lo when American bombers unloaded 2000 bombs in an area 3 miles long by 900 yards deep providing a path for the 3rd Army to pour through.
Without oil the German air force became useless and without oil Germany would lose the war. In late 1944 Germany used their new weapon, the V2 rocket, against London and Antwerp. England did not crack and the rocket attacks proved a failure.
Under heavy cloud cover in December 1944 the Germans started the Battle of the Bulge in a desperate attempt to stem the Allied advance. The Germans failed and by the fall of 1945 the Allies had spilled into the Rhineland and breached the Rhine.
The decision was made to allow the Russians to take Berlin. By May 8, 1945 the war was over and on May 9 freedom returned to Western Europe.
