in the Ardennes region where defenses had been thinned to provide troops for the upcoming autumn offensive.

Hitler's intention was to drive through Antwerp and cut off and annihilate the British 21st Army Group and the U.S. First and Ninth Armies north of the Ardennes thereby regaining the upper hand in the West and forcing the Allies to either fall retreat from Europe entirely (another Dunkirk) or to accept a negotiated peace which would allow Germany to free up troops to fight the Russian onslaught from the Eastern Front.

Aided by bad weather and fog which grounded Allied planes, Germany achieved near-total surprise and made rapid gains initially, but met unexpected and fierce resistance by various isolated units which provided crucial time for the Allies to shift troops to meet this counteroffensive.

Scenes include:

Burning and wrecked U.S. equipment, dead and wounded soldiers. Aftermath of the Malmedy Massacre of U.S. Prisoners Of War and Belgian citizens. General Dwight D. Eisenhower talks with soldiers.
