The first invasion of Continental Europe was made from Sicily across the Strait of Messina at Reggio Calabria. The 5th and Canadian divisions of the British Army, under the command of General Bernard Montgomery, lead the assault.

Italy negotiates a surrender, and with the Italian Navy no longer a threat, the American 5th Army and British Army troops commanded by Lt. General Mark Clark land at Salerno while a smaller British force land at Taranto. The invasion forces faced 18 German Divisions commanded by Field Marshall Albert Kesselring.
