In the winter of 1943 the Allied offensive in Italy was bogged down in many places due to muddy roads, flooded rivers, and mountainous terrain in which only mules and humans could move a limited quantity of supplies. General Eisenhower approved Operation Shingle an amphibious landing at Anzio and Nettuno Italy. The operation was intended to outflank the German forces on the winter line and enable an attack on Rome. The resulting combat is commonly called the Battle of Anzio.

General Eisenhower and General Clark tours the front lines in Italy. Several scenes of Eisenhower and Clark. Shows the problems of functioning in a quagmire of mud. Mules moving supplies in mountainous terrain. Flooded river. Pontoon bridge swept away by floodwaters.

Shows loaded trucks, tanks, and artillery pieces being loaded onto the invasion ships in Naples Harbor. The Allied 6th Corp soldiers board invasion ship. Their mission was to seize the port of Anzio. Shows landing and advancing 6th Corp troops. By the second day the Germans had rushed reinforcements to the area and mounted an attack to wipe out the Allied forces. Shows German forces attacking. The Allied forces prepared to defend their limited beachhead. Launching of barrage balloons, installing concertina fences, mines, building artillery emplacements. German Field Marshal Albert Kesselring directed the attack. Shows German railway gun firing. Shows destruction in Anzio. Allied forces blanket the area with a smoke screen.
The Allied forces stage an assault starting with a huge artillery bombardment followed by attacks by tanks and infantry. The German resistance was broken and the 6th Corp advanced toward Rome. Shows German prisoners of war, pow’s. Shows Allied wounded being moved to waiting hospital ships.
