The American people believed the distance between Europe, Asia, and America would insulate us from that conflict. However, as the German Army swept across Europe and England was fighting for its life America became concerned about the state of its armed forces. A map showing the areas occupied by Germany in the spring of 1940 was alarming.
On October 29, 1940, after President Roosevelt’s speech, the first Selective Service number, number 158, was drawn by a blindfolded Secretary of War. Peacetime draft registration begins (Register Here For Selective Service sign), inductee were given physical examinations, and started basic infantry training. Scenes of Army basic training for new Army recruits. Tanks, guns, vehicles, and the ability to supply the growing American Army were analyzed for war.
Football still remained a favorite Sunday afternoon pastime. Shows skyline of New York City in 1940, football stadium, and Americans enjoying a football game. However, on Sunday morning December 7, 1941 in the Hawaiian Islands war came to America. The Japanese attacked Pear Harbor. Japanese planes taking off from Japanese aircraft carrier, in flight to Pearl Harbor, and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Shows destruction at Pearl Harbor with voice of President Roosevelt saying “Yesterday December 7, 1941 a date which will live in infamy the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan”. Shows President Roosevelt giving this war speech to Congress and asking for a declaration of war.
