WWI - The Saint-Mihiel Drive 1918

The Battle of Saint-Mihiel, a major World War I battle fought September 12-15, 1918 involving the American Expeditionary Force AEF and 110,000 French troops under the command of U.S. General John J. Pershing against German positions in France. The U.S. Army Air Service which later became the U.S. Air Force played a significant role in this action.

The Saint-Mihiel salient had for four years threatened the rear of Verdun. Montsec Hill in the distance that commands a view of the Woevre Plain and used by German forces as an strong point and for observation.

On September 12th the battle opened with our artillery firing a million shells in four hours into the German positions. Soldiers loading and firing artillery. Wire-cutting patrols opening the way for infantry soldiers to advance. Accompanied by small tanks, the Infantry of the First and Fourth Corps advanced. The infantry of the Fifth Corps commenced its advance at 8am. Airco DH-4 airplanes lined up on a field preparing to take off. DH-4 planes in dogfight aerial combat with German planes. A plane falling from the sky, soldiers looking at the wreckage of a plane on the ground.

Artillery is moved up, placed in position, loaded, and fired. Infantry crosses captured trenches. Refugees are fed and prisoners are herded to the rear. Soldiers crossing recently captured trenches. Bodies of dead German soldiers. Wounded American and French soldiers are carried to the rear. A Combat Medic tending a wounded soldier.
