New Aircraft Carrier USS Essex CV-9 Is Launched

The USS Essex (CV-9), the first in the Navy's fleet of new aircraft carriers is launched at Newport News, Virginia July 31, 1942. Shows traditional ship christening by breaking a bottle of wine against the bow of the ship by Mrs. Artemus L. Gates, wife of Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Air.
