January 20, 1953, crowds from all over country pour into Washington for the inauguration. From Los Angeles and Chicago by train, from Miami by plane and from other cities by Greyhound Bus and automobile.
Eisenhower, Mamie, and Major John Eisenhower arrive by train. Eisenhower and Mamie attend religious services and are later met at the White House by President Harry and Bess Truman. Following a motorcade to the Capitol, dignitaries file through the Rotunda.
Among these are members of Congress, the Supreme Court, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Diplomatic Corps, General George C. Marshall, Truman's cabinet, and former President Herbert Hoover. Senator William F. Knowland administers the oath to Richard M. Nixon, Eisenhower is sworn in by Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson. Eisenhower offers the inaugural prayer and then addresses the nation. Eisenhower presents Mamie.

The next day the cabinet members take office. First to take the oath is John Foster Dulles. Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby becomes head of Social Security.
