Described is the Long March and Mao's call to unite the different and often warring Chinese factions. Also examined is the effect of the fallen Quing Dynasty system on the history of modern China. Great Wall of China. Still images depict the silk for opium trade, the war of 1839 or the Opium War between China and Great Britain and the yielding of Hong Kong to the British in 1842. Cixi became de facto ruler of China. Images of the Boxer Uprising, a violent and anti-foreign and anti-Christian movement is described by Pearl Buck. Images of Beijing under siege by the Boxer fanatics. Shows American soldiers in China after the Boxer Rebellion.

Footage of Shanghai and hong Kong. General Yuan Shikai rose to power and died in 1925. After his death War Lords divided up China. Shows some of the War Lords. Chiang Kai-shek comes to power. Wedding of Chiang Kai-shek. Industry thrives in China and rich Chinese began to enjoy the lifestyle once only enjoyed by foreigners. In 1931 Japan attacks and overruns Manchuria and renames it Manchukuo.

Mao Tse-tung leader of the communist movement decided the key to a revolution lay with the peasants that lived in bleak villages and treated poorly by landlords. Scenes of peasant villages. War between the Nationalist Army and communist peasants of Mao-Tse-tung. Shows air war against communist guerrillas as villages are bombed. Chinese Communists forces facing defeat retreated on what became known in history as the Long March. The Nationalist and the Communist joined a united front against Japan. Japan strikes first and attacks China July 1937 in an effort to conquer all of China. Shanghai and Nanking falls to Japanese forces. Shows destruction of Chinese cities by the Japanese invasion. The Communist Eighth Route Army retreated north to the countryside and began guerrilla warfare against the Japanese as Chiang Kai-shek tried to defend the cities. Chiang's Army retreats to Chungking deep in the mountainous region of China. Shows Chongqing as the wartime capitol and the bombing by the Japanese.

Shows aftermath of Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and America enters WWII. American planes flying the hump to deliver supplies to the Chinese Army. American General Stillwell trains a Chinese Army to strike back against the Japanese. Chiang Kai-shek and his wife sits with President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Mao-Tse-tung Communists are ignored by world leaders. Signing of WWII surrender document aboard the battleship USS Missouri.

An attempt is made to divide China between the Communist and the government of Chiang Kai-shek. This effort failed as the Nationalist and Communist both try to seize Manchuria. General George Marshall is sent to China to save the peace. A truce is negotiated, but does not hold as warfare breaks out between the Nationalist and Communist Armies. Scenes of Shanghai. Inflation destroys the middle class, Chiang' political support. Shows China's poor trying to survive in 1948. Communist has won the hearts and minds of the Chinese people. In 1948 Mao attacks in force.

Madame Chiang Kai-shek flies to Washington and makes an appeal to President Truman for American help which is denied. The Nationalist Army retreats to Formosa and foreign business men board up their shops in Shanghai and flee China. On May 27, 1949 the Red Army enters Shanghai.
