Christ And India's Untouchable
Shows passenger train approaching train station platform in India as people mill around waiting to board. Crowded street scenes in village in India, oxen pulling a cart, man pushing a cart, people carrying buckets of water, man carrying bundle on shoulders, elephant carrying a large load of hay or straw with two men riding on top.
Panning view of village in India. Scenes of segregated area outside village where the low caste or "untouchables" live with their pigs. Shows Indian village water well that is closed to untouchables. Untouchables must beg for water or die of thirst. Shows villager pouring well water into pottery container of "untouchable". Shows untouchables dipping water from dirty pond. Woman of India's low caste (untouchable) sweeps street and is paid with scraps of food, woman untouchable receiving scraps of food. Shows children of untouchables sitting on ground outside of school. Only common handicrafts are open to the untouchables in India, two men using cross-cut saw to saw a piece of wood, making pottery bowls. Mission schools outnumber all others in educating India's untouchables (Dalits).
Many former outcastes, Dalits, are now teaching high caste children. Shows teacher writing on board. After their Christmas dinner school boys enjoy entertainment of monkey performing tricks. Scenes of Mission Hospitals, sign reads "The salvation Army, Thomas Emery Hospital".
Shows Doctor once a Brahmin now willingly serving untouchables (Brahmin: highest priestly caste). Shows a Mission water well open to all. Christian marriage brings new ideals to Indian home life. Scene of village Pastor holding services, the Pastor is a vital force for the uplift of untouchables. Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, and Mechanics compose this congregation of transformed village outcastes or Dalits of India. Scenes of the daily lives of the people of India in the 1940's.
