Note: The U.S. Army Kagnew Station in Asmara, Eritrea was established in 1943 as a U.S. Army radio station after Italian forces based in Asmara surrendered to the Allies. In the 1960's it became an ideal Cold War listening station. The site in 1963 contained a 2500-acre communication dish and antenna farm. The last Americans left in April 1977.
