Vatican City
The Coronation Of Pope Paul VI
The Coronation of Pope Paul VI draws more than 250,000 people to St. Peter's Square. The rites that solemnize the elevation of Giovanni Cardinal Montini to the Chair of St. Peter are carried out with all of the traditional pomp and splendor of the Church. From the Vatican Palace the procession winds through the Square to an altar erected on the steps of St. Peter's.

For the first time in a century the ceremonies are held out-of-doors. As dusk falls, the entire scene takes on an air of breath-taking beauty, The Pope celebrates a pontifical Mass and then is crowned with the triple tiara. He promises to carry on the work of Pope John XXIII.

All of his cousins whom he reckons by the dozens - welcome the return of a man they consider a native son. President Kennedy takes tea with the clan at a farmhouse where his great grandfather was born; he's made an honorary citizen of the "Ancient Borough of Wexford”; he is a guest at a lawn party at President deValera's home. It was the biggest event in Ireland since the day of Independence!

From Ireland the President goes to England for conferences with Prime Minister MacMillan and then on to Italy for similar talks with President Segni and Premier Leone.
