America Mourns The Passing Of General Douglas MacArthur
The man who has been called one of the greatest military geniuses in the history of the United States is dead. General Douglas MacArthur, 84, succumbed after a long and valiant fight. Thus ends the military career that spanned 52 years. A career that began as a dream in childhood.
Here are some of the highlights in the distinguished career of this great military man.
General MacArthur’s days as Commander of the famed Rainbow Division in World War I. His rise to Brigadier-General, Major General and then full General and U.S. Chief-Of-Staff in 1930.
He retired to become Military Adviser to the Philippines but was called back to active duty by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941
His retreat to Australia with his vow to return to his beloved Islands.
Victory and the signing of the surrender by the Japanese aboard the battleship U.S.S. Missouri.
The war in Korea. His triumphal return home. Unmatched ovations everywhere!
Everyone remembers his famous address to a joint session of Congress with the final and familiar words: 'Old soldiers never die, they just fade away'.
Above his tomb is this inscription: 'In 20 campaigns, on 100 battlefields, around 1,000 campfires, in long years of peace as well as war. A soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty'.
