Island Of Iwo Jima
First Pictures Of The Invasion Of Iwo Jima
The U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps combine forces to engage in a battle reputed to be the toughest in the history of the United States Military. Elements of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the largest military striking force in the World, concentrates its awesome fire power on Iwo Jima, a speck of an island, only eight miles in area.

Iwo Jima, located midway between the Island of Guam and Tokyo, Japan, is bristling with 25,000 cave dwelling crack Japanese troops. Daredevil aircraft carrier pilots, naval 16 inch shells, naval cruiser and destroyer fire and rockets pound the defenders. Then hundreds of landing boats and amphibious craft race in, under a huge smoke screen and behind curtains of rocket fire with enemy shells falling everywhere.

Flame throwing tanks climb the volcanic ash embankments and clean out some emplacements and pill boxes for the Marine Divisions pinned down by the withering Japanese defensive fire. Air Field No. 1 is captured with dramatic close up battle action filmed through the slit of an attacking tank.

Back on the ships, a few husky Japanese prisoners are hauled aboard. Tons of supplies go ashore. Secretary of the Navy James V. Forrestal confers with General 'Howling Mad' Smith, the Fleet Marine Force Commander. At terrific cost in lives and material, the Iwo Jima landings are secure.
