President Lyndon B. Johnson Gives State Of The Union Address
The White House Rose Garden is the scene of an unprecedented newsreel record as President Lyndon B. Johnson briefs reporters before delivering his State of the Union message to Congress. Then there are last minute revisions with speechwriter Ted C. Sorensen before the President leaves the oval office for the Capitol with Mrs. Johnson and one of his daughters.

The President reveals to Congress that spending for the coming year would be less than $98 Billion – a $500 million drop from last year. On domestic issues, he calls anew for Civil Rights and an attack on unemployment and the ever-present problems of the poor. President Johnson declares a “war on poverty”. He announces a 25% cutback in material for nuclear weapons. The President also had a warning to any aggressors.

Berlin Wall Is Closed To All Once More
The Berlin Wall is sealed once more as the 17-day pass agreement ends. Westerners say their last goodbyes to East German relatives before returning to Free Berlin. During the period nearly a million and a quarter passes were issued to West Berlin residents. Not surprisingly, there wasn’t one who decided to defect to Communist side.
