Three days of festivities mark the emergence of the new nation of Ghana, first Black colony in Africa to gain its independence. Vice-President Richard M. Nixon and Mrs. Nixon represent the U.S., Ralph Bunche, the U.N., at the observances, which are marked by dancing and a beauty contest as well as a military review.

A naval gasoline tender collides with a freighter off New Castle, Delaware, on the Delaware River. The fuel-laden tender was cut in half, and exploded. At latest report, at least 9 were still missing in the disaster.
