United States Winter Storms Cause Havoc On East Coast From heavy snows in Virginia to gale-lashed rains in New England, the Atlantic Seaboard reeled from one of the worst storms ever to hit the area. In the South up to three feet of snow was dumped in some sections of Virginia. New York City girded for snow but got gale-force winds that caused $20,000,000 in damage. Entire towns were underwater on Long Island. New England took the brunt of the storm, too, but hit hardest of all was New Jersey where property loss is put at $50 million.
