The New Narrows Bridge collapses killing 18 construction workers. The structure, due for completion next spring, is being built at a cost of 19 million dollars. When the outer span crumbled, dozens of workmen were dashed two hundred feet into the swirling harbor waters. All but 18 were saved thanks to rapid rescue work. This is the worst accident in the annals of modern bridge building. Cause of the collapse remains a mystery. A costly puzzle in human life – twisted steel and concrete.
