The '66 election serves as a significant preview of the '68 presidential election. Governors, Senators, and Congressmen are chosen. Among the big winners: Romney in Michigan, Percy in Illinois, Edward Brooke in Massachusetts elected first Negro Senator in U.S. History, Governor Rockefeller wins third term in New York, Actor Ronald Reagan becomes Governor of California, and Mrs. Lurleen Wallace succeeds her husband as Governor of Alabama and becomes only the third lady Governor in American History.

Robert Weaver appointed first Negro Cabinet Member. U Thant unanimously reappointed to Secretary-General's Post. President DeGaulle makes State Visit to Moscow. In the same year, he evicts NATO from France.

Florence, Italy, suffers the worst art catastrophe of all time in huge flood. A sniper kills 16, and wounds 33, at the University of Texas. Some two hundred killed, including 81 children in slag slide in Wales. Pope Paul meets with the Archbishop of Canterbury in Rome.

Luci Baines Johnson weds Patrick Nugent in the "Wedding of the year." In Space, pictures of landing sites on the moon are taken and the Gemini Program is concluded triumphantly with the U.S. holding almost every record in manned space flight. Gemini lays a solid foundation for the upcoming Apollo Moon-Landing Program and the U.S. and Russia sign a Space Treaty banning all weapons in outer space and encouraging the further exploration of the atmosphere.
