Yesterday's Big Story - New Nation of Israel Is Born and Becomes Member of U.N.

Scenes of a crowded boat load of Jewish refugees from Europe that attempted to land in Palestine in October 1947. Jewish couple with baby. Jewish woman on a litter carried by two men. Jewish refugees were turned away by the British and sent to an interment camp for displaced persons on Cypress. The British Mandate was about to end and the United Nations (UN) was debating the partition of Palestine between the Jews and the Arabs as a solution to the turmoil in that country. In May 1948 a new Jewish State, Israel, is born in a bath of blood.

Civil war in Mandatory Palestine. The Battle of Haifa or Operation Bl'ur Hametz was a Haganah operation with the objective of capturing the Arab neighborhoods of Haifa. Shows troops of the Jewish paramilitary organization, Haganah, in Haifa. Shows bodies of dead Arabs. Jewish troops capture hundreds of Arab prisoners.

On May 14, 1948 a new Jewish State of Israel was born with it's government headed by David Ben Gurion. Israel took her place in the world as the first Jewish homeland since the Romans sacked Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Shows Ben Gurion exiting automobile and entering a building in Tel Aviv, Israel. Shows Israeli soldiers with rifles on their shoulders. Shows Israeli flag waving in the breeze as a symbol of hope in a troubled world. United Nation teams accompany Israeli soldiers under a white flag of truce to recover bodies of Israeli soldiers killed in a continuing strife with Arab troops.

Dr. Chaim Weizmann joins Premier David Ben Gurion. in the new Israeli government as President. Israel goes before the United Nations (UN) seeking membership to that world body. The Arab nations walk out of UN when Israel was voted a member of the United Nations (UN). Shows empty UN seats of Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.
