German Crew Scuttle Their Liner Rather Than Surrender To British

Oakland California. Survivors of the scuttled Nazi German liner USS Columbus go aboard harbor boats for Angel Island in San Francisco Bay where they will be held awaiting deportation back to Germany. At the outbreak of WWII in September 1939 the SS Columbus was on a Caribbean cruise when the ship was ordered to return to Germany immediately. When intercepted by a British destroyer off the coast of Virginia the German crew scuttled the ship rather than surrender. The passengers and crew were picked-up by an American ship as rescued seamen, not as prisoners of war.
