WORLD-HOP FLIERS IN NEAR CRASH AS PLANE BALKS AT TAKE-OFF
MINEOLA, N.Y. – The superb flying of Clyde Pangborn saves himself and Hugh Herndon Jr. when their ship, a single-motored plane, falters under a load of 8,500 pounds. Carrying 830 gallons of gasoline for the first leg, to Moscow, the aviators are forced to dump the fuel when the ship is unable to rise. Skillful manipulation by the pilot brings the nose upward and the start is successfully executed. The fliers return to the field and prepare to leave again with a lighter load on shorter first flight.

DUKE OF AOSTA DIES; ROYAL POMP ATTENDS LAST SOLEMN RITES
TURIN, ITALY – Among the graves 30,000 heroes of the Third Army, which he commanded during the war, the renowned soldier is laid to rest, while hundreds mourn. King Victor Emmanuel, Crown Prince Humbert, the Duchess of Aosta, and many generals of the Allied Armies view the interment in Redipuglia Cemetery. Hundreds of his comrades who escaped death, but many maimed for life, follow the cortege to attend the last rite of their beloved leader.
