WENATCHEE, WASH. – Zooming out of the western skies, Hugh Herndon, Jr., and Clyde Pangborn set down their flying machine after spanning the ocean in 41 hours, 13 minutes – completing the first non-stop flight of its kind in history. Their landing gear discarded at the start of lighten the load, the airplane is brought down in a sort of a pancake squat, which wrecks only the propeller of the ship. The aviators are shaken up but do not suffer disabling injuries after their epochal adventure. LOS ANGELES, CAL. – Skidding in oil spilled by Carl Ryder, the car of Ernie Triplett, leading the field, is wrecked in a collision with machines driven by Babe Stapp and Ryder. CHICAGO, ILL. – Rumors that Soviet grain will be withdrawn from foreign trade for a two-year period hit the Midwest selling-pit sharply and causes all prices to advance. Purchases of may futures climb rapidly, and forecast a complete turn for prosperity to the farmer.
