The “stringed” actors and actresses go through their paces, acting roles of characters that played important parts in the career of the first president. An audience of children jams the hall and gives the show a warm reception, insuring it a “long run” and promising much needed assistance to the city’s poor.

VIENNA, AUSTRIA – In a touching tribute to their fellow officers who died while discharging their duties, the members of the world-renowned force gather at the Votiv-Church to participate in the celebration of an anniversary mass, the first in 13 years. Goose-stepping through a picturesque drill, the regiment is reviewed by their president, ex-Chancellor Dr. Johann Schober and Frederick Gustavus, Cardinal Piffl. Incidentally, these are the last pictures ever taken of the great clergyman who died soon afterward, mourned by a nation in whose life he was a powerful figure.

DETROIT, MI – Spreading ruin over a 3-block area, a sudden explosion in a plumbing shop throws Hamilton Avenue into a panic. MONTE CARLO, MONACO – The break-neck race around the hair pin turns and up and down the death dealing hills and grades becomes the most bitterly fought battle in years as the Italian Speed merchant and Rudolf Caracciola throw all caution to the winds in a remarkable exhibition of daredevil auto driving. They were Neck and neck as they thunder up the winding approach to the famous resort. In a blazing finish Nuvolari flashes over the last stripe a minute ahead of his game competitor, as the rest of the huge field comes in sight of the end of the course. A new record is hung up by the victor, as he smashed the time set by Louis Chiron last year. The Italian finishes the 199-mile grind in the remarkable time of 3 hours, 22 minutes and 25 1/5 seconds.

NEW YORK, NY – The triumphant arrival of General George Washington from his Virginia home at the metropolis is re-enacted in a colorful and faithful pageant marking the 143rd anniversary of the historic event. Colonial uniforms, Revolutionary firearms, barges, and carriages form a quaint parade up the canyon of lower Manhattan in the shadow of the towering skyscrapers. Into Bryant Park rides the Father of His Country, impersonated by Kenneth Murchison, and on the balcony of a replica of Federal Hall solemnly swears to uphold the Constitution of the new republic. One of the most picturesque events in the Bicentennial celebration.

FLIERS DIE AS PLANE CRASH SETS FIRE TO HOME ON SOUTH SIDE
CHICAGO, IL – The engine of their ship goes dead several hundred feet up and in an attempt to maneuver a safe landing Air Corps Reserve Lieutenants Harry Sandusky and Charles H. Fargo plunge to their doom into a 2-story brick dwelling. The airplane is completely demolished in the collision – city firemen are rushed to the scene. Acting quickly the frightened residents are rescued and the blaze that follows the explosion is confined to the one structure.

SENIOR CLASS ENACTS TRADITIONAL MAY DAY “HOOPEE” CELEBRATION
WELLESLEY, MA – The annual race to the chapel is held by Wellesley girls as their last year of college draws to an end. The legend goes that the first feminine hoop pusher to reach the church will be the first to win a bride’s veil. Off in a cloud of flying high heels, the contestants jam the highway in a breath-taking competition. Coiffures and dignity get all mussed up in the hectic fight, until Mildred Marcy, of Newton, MA, breaks away from the pack to romp in the winner.

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Spanning the Hackensack and Passaic Rivers and the wide expanse of waste marshes, the 3 ½ -mile steel and concrete roadway costing $20,000,000 is rapidly nearing completion. Toiling more than 135 feet above the water, laborers hustle through their daring tasks to bring the gigantic project to a successful finish. The link will connect this city with Newark, and furnish an artery for traffic to Shore Points from the metropolitan district, used annually by millions of motorists. CHICAGO, IL –Al Capone deserted by his hoodlum friends, the one time kingpin of the underworld starts the long journey toward Atlanta, GA, where for the next seven years, at least, he’ll be No. 40,886 at the Federal Penitentiary. His 11-year sentence for evading income tax payment upheld by the higher courts, Public Enemy No. 1, the bragging, swaggering, “Scarface Al” is manacled to a petty auto thief and hustled aboard the Dixie Flyer. Dejected and disappointed, the man who defied justice rattles off toward jail and the end of his crime career, amid the salvos from photographers’ flashlights booming a farewell.

NEW YORK, NY – A rubbish fire in the piling under the steel and concrete steamship dock grows into an unrelenting blaze that sweeps the 1,000-foot wharf from the shore to the bulkhead far out in the North River. More than 400 firemen are overcome by the stinging acrid fumes as they man the fire-fighting machinery massed to battle one of the most uncontrollable conflagrations in the city’s history. Lieutenant Colonel Ralph A. Kluge, designer of the structure, a spectator at the scene, is accidentally killed, the only fatality during the four day blaze. Night and day the stubborn licking flames are fought on land by fifty pieces of apparatus, and from the water by six of the municipality’s most powerful fireboats. This was the most spectacular blaze the metropolis has ever seen.

NEAR-FATALITY MARS OPENING OF OFFICIAL AUTO RACING SEASON
ROBY, IN – Daredevil drivers of the dirt tracks inaugurate the new period of competition with a stirring demonstration of fearless piloting that brings Billy Arnold, 1930 champion, back in his first appearance since he cracked up at Indianapolis. Pushing their vehicles to the last notch Dick Kroger and Bill Brooks collide in front of the field in the 10-mile race, sending Kroger crashing through the rail. Rushed to a nearby hospital, prompt medical aid saves his life. The sudden accident causes the judges to abruptly terminate the race, with Arnold in the lead – a real thriller.

PUEBLA, MEXICO – Garbed in the gorgeous costumes of the redskin forebears, natives re-enact the celebrated Battle of “Cinco de Mayo” at which the French invasion of General Forey was repulsed by their ancestors under Zaragoza and Diaz, 70 years ago. FLORENCE, ITALY – Garbed in the colorful costumes of the 16th century the traditional football contest from which the modern gridiron game developed is again portrayed before a host of royal personages in the famed Piazza della Signoria. Legend says the bitterly fought battle was waged during the period when the city fell and became the duchy of Tuscany. A picturesque pageant participated in by the entire populace precedes the game, waged between the forces of both sides of the River Arno, which climaxes the momentous day.
