In the nation's capital, Secretary of Labor Mitchell, steel spokesman R. Conrad Cooper and Union head David McDonald announce settlement of the 8-month-old steel dispute, after a 22-hour negotiating session, with major credit going to Secretary Mitchell and to Vice-President Nixon.

KENNEDY THROWS HAT IN RING:
In Washington, Massachusetts' Senator John Kennedy formally announces his candidacy for the Democratic Presidential nomination as the 1960 campaign gets into high gear.

PASADENA ROSE BOWL: Washington 44 - Wisconsin 8: Pasadena: Before 100,000 fans, quarterback Bob Schloredt and fleet-footed George Foleming lead the Washington Huskies to a sensational 44-8 upset of Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.

MIAMI ORANGE BOWL: Georgia 14 - Missouri 0: Miami: In the Orange Bowl, underdog Missouri stages a gallant defense that holds the Georgia Bulldogs to a standstill on the ground. But Georgia's brilliant passer Francis Tarenton connects with two scoring heaves that decide the issue, 14-0.

NEW ORLEANS SUGAR BOWL: Mississippi 21 - L.S.U. - 0: The Rebels of Ole Miss avenge their only defeat of the season in this post-season rematch with L.S.U. 83,000 fans see the slashing brilliant play that clearly establishes Mississippi as number 2 team in the nation.

DALLAS COTTON BOWL: Syracuse 23 - Texas 14: Syracuse, national champions, and the Texas Longhorns clash in the hardest fought of the post-season classics. The Orangemen's power tells, despite mid-game fireworks that nullify one TD and a second half Texas scoring drive.

IKE'S STATE OF THE UNION MESSAGE:
President Eisenhower addresses the joint houses of Congress, telling of his hopes for peace, reviewing the status of America's defenses, and calling for continued effort against inflation in a dramatic State of the Union message.

34 DIE IN AIR CRASH:
34 die in the North Carolina crash of a night coach airliner bound from New York to Miami. The twisted wreckage is searched for clues to the mid-air disintegration of the craft.

JAPANESE ROYAL ALBUM:
On Crown Prince Akihito's birthday, the entire Royal Family, including his bride Princess Michiko, poses for additions to the royal family album taken by Akihito himself in these unusual intimate scenes.

APT APE ARTIST:
In the Rotterdam Zoo, Sophie, a 12-year-old lady gorilla, has a fling at abstract art and eats it up. Her brushwork and texture puts her on a plane with some of the best known of the "far out" school.

SPRING MILLINERY:
A breath of spring in the gloomy depts of winter. In New York, trend-setting designers pre view their Spring collections - bright, light and airy.

BRITISH BOAT SHOW:
In London, Britain's National Boat Show boasts everything from cat-boats to catamarans, including the weird "Hovercraft" and a lavish yacht which handles by remote control. In a bit of by-play, the demonstration of a new life-raft turns into a surprise dunking for one exhibitor.

SKIING AT GARMISCH:
At Garmisch-Partnekirchen, Europe's ski elite take part in a meet thtat offers a forerunner of the Squaw Valley Winter Olympics, and produces some of the most thrilling sports photography ever captured on film!

NASSER STARTS ASWAN DAM:
President Nasser launches construction of the first Soviet-financed phase of Egypt's monumental Aswan High Dam project in elaborate ceremonies at which King Mohammed of Morocco is guest of honor. The ground-breaking is a 20-ton rock slide!

ANTI-NAZI RALLY:
Tens of thousands of young Berliners rally to denounce resurgent Naziism, following a rash of swastika-smearing incidents in Germany and the Western world.

CONTINENTAL CIRCUS:
Incredible animal acts steal the show in two crack Continental circuses, in Berlin and Moscow. Super-stars are a band of monkey musicians, and a troup of tigers who happily splash about in a fantastic aqua-ballet.

BARREL JUMPING:
At Grossingers, New York, the annual world barrel jumping championship, won for the umpteenth time by the perennial and astonishing Leo Lebel with a titanic leap.

ALPINE SLALOM:
In Switzerland, one hundred top skiers from 14 lands warm up for the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley on a savagely difficult slalom course, tackling 72 gates in a 200 foot drop!

GOLDEN GLOVES:
In New York's Sunnyside Gardens, this year's Golden Gloves gets under way with enthusiastic amateurs slinging leather before a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Action and excitement fills the bill...

IKE BLASTS DEFENSE CRITICS:
At his first White House Press Conference since his three-continent tour, the President reacts personally and strongly to a question on criticisms of America's defense policies.

AIRLIFT FROM ICE ISLAND:
Ice Station Charlie, hundreds of miles north of Pt. Barrow, Alaska, begins to break up in raging storms. The 8-square-mile floe carries scientists and 10-tons of equipment and apparatus, all airlifted out in a desperate race with the angry Arctic.

AUTOMATION IN THE NURSERY:
From Hungary, a humorous prediction of the future, with scenes of what an automated nursery might be like, with one nurse bringing up a brigade of babies entirely by push-button!

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:

Twenty-five years ago, storms and floods scourge the nation. In the Mississippi Valley, whole counties are desolated by floods. In Texas, a biting cold wave, blizzards and a sudden tornado take a shocking toll. New York City digs out from under its worst snow storm since the blizzard of '88. Florida, on the other hand, stages a sunshine fashion show. In the sports world, Glenn Cunningham shows his mastery in the mile, beating off Jean Venzke's challenge in the Millrose Mile. Athlete Of The Year - none other than Dizzy Dean. An oddity in the news, a compact, rear-engine car tested on Hollywood streets - twenty-five years ago!

HAWAII VILLAGERS FLEE VOLCANIC TORRENTS:
The villagers of Kapolo flee a river of molten rock bearing down from six volcanic fountains of fire. A shallow ravine diverts the lava into the sea, where the clash of ocean and white-hot flame produces a titanic spectacle. It's Hawaii's second major eruption in recent months.

RIOTS SEND KISHI OFF:
In Tokyo, a mob of left-wing students demonstrates at the airport to protest Premier Kishi's flight to Washington to sign a new mutual security pact with the U.S. Secretary of State Herter and Vice-President Nixon greet the envoy on arrival.

MOUNTBATTEN WEDDING:
England's most glittering wedding since that of the Queen herself calls a dazzling roster of the elite to Remsey Abbey where Lady Pamela Mountbatten marries Douglas Hicks. One of the bridesmaids is Pricess Anne, and young Prince Charles joins in a toast to the newly-weds.

THOMAS HIGH JUMPS AGAIN:
At the Massachusetts K of C games in Boston Garden, John Thomas the high jumping phenomenon, returns to competition, setting a new mark for the meet, in his first appearance since the injury last March that threatened to end his career.

FOX GROVE SKI MEET:
At Fox Grove, the Chicago suburb, America's Olympic ski jumpers get in some last minute competition before the Squaw Valley Olympiad. The winner, Ansten Samuelsten of Steamboat Springs with two soaring leaps.

EAST-WEST PRO ALL STARS:
At the Los Angeles Coliseum, the pro grid all star game, with Johnny Unitas showing why he's the N.F.L.'s athlete of the year as his blazing aerials lead the west to a 38-21 triumph over the East.

IKE, KISHI, SIGN SECURITY PACT:
In unprecedented and historic ceremony at the White House, President Eisenhower and Japan's Premier Kishi sign a new 10-year security treaty elevating Japan to the status of an ally and full equal of the U.S.

MARCHOF DIMES FAMILY OF THE YEAR:
John F. Collins, his wife and four children, are named the 1960 March of Dimes Family of the Year in New York. Stricken in 1955, Mr. Collins recently campaigned for the Mayoralty of Boston from his wheelchair - and won!

INSTANT DRY CLEANING:
A futuristic fantasy from Hungarian film makers shows how the poor soul of the future who gets himself mud-splashed will get himself, his suit and the bouquet he's bringing to his girl, instatly dry-cleaned.

WASHINGTON WIVES CURTSY TO PAST:
A unique fashion parade i the capital, as the wives of the nation's legislators portray the great ladies of bygone eras in authentic reproductions of original costumes, outside the Jefferson Memorial.

POLAR BEAR-NIKS:
Somewhere in the Soviet, a group of ice-happy tovarisches carve a swimming hole in the surface of a frozen river and splash and cavort like so many frolicsome polar bears. Actually, the water's warm as borscht!

PRE-OLYMPIC SKIING:
In Austria's Hahnenkamm races, final tune-up for Squaw Valley, two American girls tie for honors in the slalom - Penny Pitou of New Hampshire and Linda Meyers of California. In the men's events, Adrien Avillard becomes the first non-Austrian to win the combined title since 1934 with a blazing performance on the challenging course.

20 DIE IN ALGERIA RIOTS:
In Algeria, the worst crisis for France since De Gaulle returned to power. Following the ouster of paratroop General Massu for opposition to De Gaulle's moderate self-determination plan. A night of bloody clashes among Frenchmen ends with 20 dead, hundreds injured, a general strike, and hundreds of die-hard colonials barricaded in the streets, armed to the teeth, in fiery protest that shakes all France.

COAL MINE DISASTER:
At Coalbrook, South Africa, a time of suspenseful waiting and prayer, as rescue teams dig toward 440 miners trapped in a deep shaft for nearly a week. Rescuers are slowed by deadly gases and hard rock formations, and hope fades, but the digging continues.

NETHERLANDS FLOODS:
Amsterdam's costly floods, in which thousands of homes and small businesses are inundated by a breach in the great North Sea Canal with repair efforts hindered by the storms and savage weather that scourges the Continent.

DEMOCRATIC DINNER:
In Washington, D.C., a $100-a-plate fund dinner gathers top Democratic luminaries, headed by Harry S. Truman, and spotlighting the four front-running Presidential hopefuls, Kennedy, Johnson, Humphrey and Symington.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO:

In Flemington, New Jersey's venerable courthouse, the sensational trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann for the "crime of the century" the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby. Moments of high and gripping drama as the bereaved parents confront Hauptmann from the witness stand - as the State draws its web of fatal evidence inexorably tighter, and finally, the raking cross examination of Hauptmann by Attorney General Wilentz. A story that gripped and chilled the nation.

FILM INDUSTRY COMMUNION BREAKFAST:
Following early Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, members of the film industry in New York, from the rank and file to union leaders and high company executives, join in the traditional communion breakfast.

Algiers remains in a state of siege with thousands of insurgents behind street barricades in the heart to the City and Army forces passive - their ultimate loyalty in doubt. De Gaulle secures his position by arresting rightists in France itself, and while both sides, and the world, await the next move in this major test of the Fifth Republic's authority.

LEATHER FASHIONS FOR SPRING:
Aboard a south-bound cruise ship, leather fashions for afternoon fun and chic but casual evening are spotlighted for Spring 1960. All are bright in color and light in spirit, comfortable, practical and eminently swank.

JOHANSSON WINS HICKOCK BELT:
At the Annual Charity Dinner in Rochester, New York, sports writers and broadcasters, Ingemar Johannson receives the $10,000 Hickock Belt as Professional Athlete of the Year.

MONTE CARLO RALLY:
Nearly a hundred cars start the gruelling mountain run of the Monte Carlo Rally, 357 miles of arduous driving over the winding, twisting, icy and treacherous roads. Teh winners, sweeping the first 3 places, are German teams.

GOLDEN GLOVES:
Golden Gloves sub-novice heavyweights in a series of full-steam-ahead slugfests at Sunnyside Gardens. More than solid knockout studs this sequence of Pier Six brawls in the squared circle, in which spirit and muscles make do for skill.
